Can anyone recommend to me a good (but easy) map making site? Or is anyone willing and able to help me with a project to make a post-apocalyptic Earth map? My skill with such things is coming seriously short of what I would like and as I continue to frustrate myself futzing around with this - I figure that it couldn't hurt to ask.

Well, Campaign Cartographer 3 is a "good" map-making program, but it's not free and there's a steep learning curve (easier than learning how to draw maps yourself, though).

Can't really think of any sites that make it super-easy off the top of my head. I'd imagine if they were out there we'd already know about them...but maybe (hopefully!) I'll be proven wrong.

I had a problem finding a good map maker that was free for my D&D game and my 7th Sea campaign. I resorted to digging up my old AD&D Core Rules and installing those.

You can probably find a torrent for that and the map maker inside that, while not the best, is good enough to get the job done. The only problem I've had is on Windows 7/8 printing is an issue. You have to print from the print preview and do it from the specific pages.

Drawing your own map is probably much easier than Campaign Cartographer.

Seriously, pen and paper, then take it to the library to scan it. If you're not great with drawing stuff yourself, go to the library and trace maps from an atlas and use those. My library has a bunch of historical maps that I use for scenarios with my table top group and it's worked great.

Maybe @2mspris doesn't have access to a library, you insensitive clod.

Well, the librarian does have access to a library... she was just looking for something that would be a little easier than that. (And less time consuming.) I may just have to suck it up. 😣

Or take a photo of the map with a phone and send it to someone else. Back when I had time, before the coming of humanity, I would redraw game maps from their hex layout to something similar in detail, with ink on aged paper. Then you could add in notes and corrections.

I also wrote maps and notes on fragile biological materials, so this may just be crazy.

I have a waggish sense of humor.

Just to show that I have at some point in my life played tabletop RPGs, when I read the bolded section above I immediately thought "pizza crusts."

To be clear, your asking about creating new geography, not mapping an existing place (MU), yeah?

I used the soft inner layer of eucalyptus tree bark. It's like very very fine leather, but as fragile as old cloth. Absorbent as hell, used a lot of ink with a fine brush to write and draw on it.

Yes, I had too much time, and eucalyptus trees.

Internet. So far away. Cannot verify.

Another odd trick for making maps I've used. Trace the approximate shape of a known coastline. Make the water the land, the land water.

PS Cobaltasaurus Regina should kill me for I have failed her map needs. Mainly due to being home only on weekends, but still.

I totally just make maps on Google Draw. Then I make little smileys or stars for the players so they can indicate their positions. Totally changed my GMing to have a reference.
