Aaaaaand my brother has now disowned me because I (being entirely reasonable, honestly, I am quite capable of being calm in text even if I'm upset) told her that I'd talk to her when she was capable of being not cruel to me and that I was not her punching bag. It's really hurtful, and not only because I've been fighting hard for them with the rest of my family. I mean, he's been my brother since I was six years old. I have been there for him for many years when NO ONE else was speaking to him. But since I won't participate in his wife's meltdown (fuck, I'm the one that made it possible for them to even be together at all!), he's done with me. I really don't know if this hurts more or less than my mom dying. At least she didn't choose to leave me.

Ugh I hate that. When people tell me "smile!" like they're being cute or cheery, I go from probably content and okay to instant actual anger. Nothing brings on the hate quite like "calm down".

The real kicker was... I was smilling. And they didn't believe the smile was real enough. Stuff like that. Which did, in turn, propel me into massive amounts of insta-anger. Wouldn't have even been so bad if it hadn't happened about five times, with five different people, in five totally different instances/scenarios.

I wouldn't even say I have a very bad case of "resting bitch-face'. I've been told that my smiles don't look sincere, quite often. I've realized over the years that I apparently just have sad-shaped-eyes or something. Today was just weird. I was in a perfectly good mood when I woke up, damnit, lol.

My office has a dot matrix printer. We also still use software originally designed in the 1980s. But I work in Criminal Justice for the Government, so take that as you will.
(We DO finally have Windows 7 and a new software suite that isn't finished so we also use the old non-GUI system)
@Shebakoby Having worked campus IT, it's probably both underfunding and people refusing to give up things they are comfortable with (thrown in with 'but it still WORKS!')

It was CSI, but I went back and checked and he was actually printing a large batch of line data from a car's onboard computer, so it's passable and I was wrong. >_<

Not that I'd leave Texas for long but I'd like the option to live somewhere else if I wanted to. Being restricted to a handful of states because of SAD sucks. My options are Texas (I do love Texas so so much), Louisiana (I just can't), Arizona maybe, Florida, and California. I am so not rich enough for Cali and it's the only appealing option. I can't even move within Texas. Dallas gets snow, Austin is batshit, San Antonio is gross and I'd become a serial killer really quick on the inbetween bits. West Texas and the panhandle basically don't exist. Also, snow. Thanks brain. I love that you think snow should make me try to kill myself. Maybe I'd like to be a snow bunny but we'll never get to find out!

"But it still works!" is the single best reason to keep a system in operation. I know that among techies it's all annoying that someone dares to use stuff that was around when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, but the claim that "you could replace it with modern software/hardware and it will be All Better

Replacing a system that works with a new, as yet untried, system is an incredibly risky venture. There are a lot of up-front costs with no conceivable return for months to years (depending on the size of the project)—and those returns may not even happen!
About three out of every four software projects are deemed failures by the people who make them (Source: Brooks), and the people making them have a vested interest in claiming that they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. I suspect, from years of observation, that were you to ask the actual end-users if the software project was a success you'd see that number rise to 9944 times out of ten thousand.
What kind of sucker places expensive bets where the people who have a vested interest in pumping up the success statistics are saying "well, you'll lose 3/4 of the time"? Why would you do that when you can use a system that is provably doing its job right now?
