It may very well be that the poor pay less because they earn less than their exemption, and actually receive income from our tax system in the form of a tax refund.
Tax refunds are silly.
Once upon a time they let me not choose between bread and rent, and later after I qualified a larger one meant I could stay in touch with my son and not have him suddenly whisked off to Germany, so...debatable. On the other hand, I'm probably a little too close to the topic, so...grain of salt in regards to my thoughts on it, haha.
