@Ganymede reminded me of this so blame her.

I hate, hate, hate, hate the mindset that says "There is only good, or bad."
Sometimes, things are just 'fine' and that's perfectly okay! Great is the enemy of good, and all that.

The last few years have seen a really strong polarization of everything, I feel. Is this good or bad, do you love or hate this, right or wrong, like, I'm sorry that life isn't a listicle.

@paris Aye. I also hate the "modern" idea that just because I don't publicly announce something every single time I open my mouth that I'm clearly on the "other side" of whatever argument is being discussed. If I don't publicly denounce racism every single time I log on to my computer, I'm clearly a racist or a 'racist enabler' but no, Sharon, this is my me time.

@ganymede I have run out of fingers and toes counting the times people have asked me what I have against <thing>, when <thing> is something I have never even heard of -- so... that. Very much that.

            Oh fucking well.

I get stopped regularly by 'Save The Children' folks asking for donations. Every time they ask me 'Excuse me Sir! Do you believe every child deserves a fair start in life?'

Fuck that question. Fuck them. Here's my last two answers.

"No, and I'll tell you why. These 'children' you are saving is really just patching a wound, a wound that is best fixed by providing education and infrastructure to third world countries. Ensuring that children are born in better conditions is a better use of money."

And... here's the lazy version I used most recently.

"No. The world is overpopulated as it is." That one earned an 'Oh my God!' and a look of horror. It felt -good-. Fuck you, Save The Children. Fuck you so hard.

If anyone else in here is a retail employee, I will happily gift you the link to the Christmas playlist I made for @insomniac7809 a few years ago.

....it's called "Merry Christmas, Ya Filthy Animals" and is forty punk songs either covering Christmas songs or, often, about how fucking awful the holidays are.

My problem with Christmas music over here in "The Other Colonies" is that one of our nation's staple Christmas tunes... is performed by a convicted child abuser. So it's a little jarring to have that thought in mind when cheerful music comes on over the tannoy.

@tinuviel Yeeeah, we don't really have that. Instead, we have "Baby, It's Cold Outside" or, as I like to call it, "the holiday date rape song" with its 57 cover versions. They range from "kind of squinting at this" to "it's roofies, honey, he put roofies in your drink" and everyone pretends this is fine. It's weird and very uncomfortable, and the gender swapped version wasn't cute. It was also creepy af.

Yeah, this discourse comes up every year and it's super not a date rape song, as it's based in the humor of its day often having women lean on the idea that they've had too much to drink (while being perfectly or near sober) to have an excuse to Get Busy. But it's also totally a product of the rape culture that existed then and still does now? Complicated song is complicated, but there's a lot of cultural context to it that people lose and then draw the wrong conclusions.

^ Yep, pretty much that. I'm aware of how it was intended at the time it was written. And I find that pretty awful, too, in a way that doesn't really alleviate how sleazy a few of the modern versions I've heard come across.

@aria Oh yeah, on that we agree. It turned from a wink-wink social commentary into something John Barrowman would sing at four am after a gallon bottle of pre-mixed Bacardi and sprite.

ETA: No I don't know where that analogy came from, but it's scary accurate.
