If you're going to be a tour guide, lose the vocal fry.

There's nothing worse than hearing every detail of a new facility like you totally could have made one better, but you had to go to the mall because Brad was in the food court flirting with that slut at the Orange Julius.

@SG OH GOD, THE VOCAL FRY.

When I had voice students during my last year of my Masters, I had to fight uphill to get the teenage girls to drop the goddamned vocal fry because it will wreck your voice.

Vorpal is actually Satan made MU*nifest

When you find a really cool nail polish and try it out at the store and it looks awesome, then when you put it on at home and it dries differently and just looks completely different, and somehow changes your skin tone so your hands look like you were out in the sun with really long sleeves on. You know you can't really return nailpolish even if you have a receipt and it just smells bad too.

And you look like you just murdered an alien because you only ever fuck up non normal colours.

People who mow the lawn at 6:30 in the morning on a Thursday.

@Insomnia Addendum: Lawn guys that think that just because its 2pm on a Wednesday, its okay to run FIVE LEAFBLOWERS simultaneously around my townhouse. Motherfuckers, I am ON THE PHONE. These assholes will like bang the door with the friggin' leafblower!

@Miss-Demeanor The house behind my apartment has a crew of these people. I watched them one day and one of them spent 10 minutes trying to corral a piece of trash with a leaf blower rather than just bending down to pick it up. WTF, man?!

One of the other people on the crew was a god with theirs, cleared up their half of the yard in about 20 seconds while Moron McLoudblower is just too stoned to cope with life on the other side.

@SG Yes, that exactly. Like, my car is clearly out front, you can see me through the window. YOU KNOW I AM HERE. I get that you (lawn dude) get paid by the hour and thus want to stretch out your contracted jobs as long as possible to collect a bigger paycheck. I respect that. But goddammit, do it in front of the empty house, or maybe in that big middle grassy area that's constantly covered in pine needles and grass clippings and leaves! Stop leafblowing my front door for ten minutes at a stretch!

@Miss-Demeanor You can always tell who in my neighborhood has hired these people, and who hasn't.

The one who hasn't is the one that ultimately ends up with everyone else's leaves a foot deep on their lawn.

You can watch, over a period of about two weeks, as that pile migrates from one lawn to the next, one side of the street to the other, until some poor bastard at the bottom of the hill is stuck with a rake and dozens of plastic bags, inventing new and creatively colorful combinations of profanity just in time for Thanksgiving.

                      Oh fucking well.

That would be just cause for a civil suit I would think. One does not move ones waste to another's lawn.

My roommate owes me about $3,000 and I know someone said I was really nice and decent and a good person for fronting that money when they needed it, and I fully do not expect to get it back, but goddamn I just got furious when they asked me how much I'd sell one of my old laptops for, as theirs looks likely to die. I don't know if it makes me an asshole but I basically told them I would honestly have just given them one if they didn't owe me so much money, which is true. Like, part of me wonders if this is me being petty or something, but god it just feels like "I owe you a ton of money but can you do me this favor?"

@Roz If a friend of yours owes you so much money they haven't paid back in a reasonable amount of time then you basically have every right under the sun to do them no further favors ever. If they were decent people they'd try to make it up to you - if not financially if they simply can't then in any other way possible, not ask for more breaks.

When I moved last year (October), I had literally just stepped into the door at the end of a cross-country (South Carolina to Seattle) drive to a phone call from my parents. The day I had left, my brother began acting very strangely. Manic. Then violent. Had admitted to mixing drugs for a 'high.' They were calling to let me know he was under psychiatric care and was, supposedly, blaming me for it. (He was blaming me, not them)

This past Spring, he mixed various drugs again, went manic, and was arrested following harassing neighbors in his underwear. He was compliant with the cops, neighbors didn't want to press charges, so he just went into psych again.

Today, he's sending me the strange messages on FB that have preceded previous situations. I checked with my parents and they said he was manic this morning, but 'seemed normal' since. I've had to block him because the messages are either entirely nonsensical, or things like:
"I want to be me, but you took that, refused to let me be and made sure I would never amount to anything."

                              He is 26.
I have not been 'a part' of his life other than distantly in over a decade. This because of a few times in my teens in which he was violent towards me, made threats to kill me, etc. I have tried. I have really, really tried, because I'm jealous of those who are close to their siblings. I had thought that maybe once he was an adult... but no. I can't do this any more.

This is absolutely not petty. I have friends I love but will not loan money to anymore, because it's a never-ending cycle.

I'll echo this. You've done plenty for them. It's OK to step back and say 'I need to do this for me.'

I do not lend money to friends. I pay for them sometimes, but I will not loan them money. None of them ask me to loan them money because they know I won't; not because I'm a skin-flint, but because I know I'm a bastard of a collector.

Thanks for the reassurances, everyone. The reason that I fronted the $3,000 is that we're both on the lease and I needed us to not, you know, get evicted and to have a judgment on my record. I don't think I would have lent that kind of money to someone otherwise. Like, I can imagine maybe very specific situations with very specific people, but definitely not this person.

There's not much saving individuals that are so self-absorbed that they cannot recognize the sacrifices of others that help them or refuse to face the hard truths about their own culpability for their poor circumstances. Never be responsible for them, since they will never appreciate it nor change.
