        I obviously misread that.

The articles about women in gaming made me realise I have never actually met a woman who was into TT wargaming, ala Warhammer 40k, Kings of War, Fantasy, Bolt Action etc.

            That made me kinda sad.

Edit: In RL that is, I have at MU*s because they are filled with nerds.

@Olsson I have a couple girlfriends who are into warhammer 40K, but they are more about painting the models and assembly than actually playing the battles. I used to be big time into Warhammer 40K and it was /rare/ I ran into another woman who played competitively.

@Misadventure You'd be surprised at tournaments how many people are just annoyed that they have to paint everything. There's a very large wargaming part of it that is into it beyond the models and painting aspect.

I've seen armies of Space Marines that were basically spray painted blue, given very slap dash white ultramarine symbology just to be counted as 'painted' so they could be introduced into tournament play.

That's not to say that I've found someone who hates a well painted miniature, but there's a lot of people who aren't willing or unable to put the time and effort into painting the miniatures the best they can, or feel that they haven't the ability so don't even try. They find the painted miniature qualifier to be very upsetting.

@Lithium Not too surprising, but plenty enough of people only do one aspect of that hobby. I have wondered a little what might be the cause of it, if it is a big part the supposed gender preferences that for example has (atleast here) way more women in say LARPing than TT RP or other things like wargaming too. While I've met no women into wargaming, a few into TT RP I can easily say it can sometimes even be a 1:1 gender ratio at LARP events sometimes. But I mean it is usually a number of things rather than just one.

A fair deal of it I suspect is lack of representation and the horrible way so many miniatures of women look. In 40k for example I guess you'd need to go Sisters of Battle or Eldar (maybe Tau?) to find much in the way of female miniatures.

Admiteddly I myself easily get tired of the long ass games, been moving more towards skirmish games recently But anyway.

@Lithium Well, it's anecdotal of course but I haven't met women - even the most avid readers - who liked certain aspects of books or games that I did.

For example I love 'tactical' novels featuring brilliant military leaders overcoming the odds. And yet even female friends who enjoyed books such as The Red Knight didn't like those parts as much. It's also a cliche but there might be a point in it that girl-gamers like the story more than men do -- on WoW I and many of my guy friends barely read most of the quest texts other than the "what to kill" and "what that gets you" parts but several ladies I know do.

Now, there are two obvious conclusions I can draw here.

                      1. As mentioned it's all anecdotal. Some chicks will be even more into the tactical crap than I am or barely skim at quest texts, and some dudes will be all over those things.

                      2. We don't need to be the same, to like the exact same things, in order to get along.

Having said that, girls still have the cooties. Boys rule, girls drool.

@Arkandel lol I always read ALL of the quest text. Always. But my girlfriend doesn't so it leads to some fun shenanigans sometimes.

I know it is probably different since I played at a RP server, but man my experiance there is utterly different. Knowing the story and reading the quests texts is important!

I only ever play on RP servers. Not for any other reason (the 'roleplay' to be found, if it exists at all, is hilariously bad) but because I always figure there's a higher probability people will be able to spell and type.

... Which I am continuously proven so very, very wrong about.

@Arkandel <insertsillynamehere> is now accepting Druids only! We are based off the Warrior series of books by <whateverthehecktheirnameis>!

My problem with RP servers is that there is usually a /wealth/ of theme that is awesome and cool and can be made into great lore abiding guilds, and then you get stuff like that.

I used to play on RP only servers because I had /hoped/ the environments would be more mature and less toxic. I was unfortunately wrong on an epic scale on that one. So now I play (when I do) on regular servers or I have to turn off every channel beyond tells and guild.

The US servers seems to have more of that, or so I experianced with just blalantly using different worlds. As for the toxic enviroment it has only gotten worse with the years.

One thing is the witch hunts for people who TS/ERP which has gone on for years. The community will harrass them to no end for it. But yes, even when I was just playing to play I did keep to RP servers because I did find it had more social people in my experiance.

If you want to see a successful run of a semi MMO that is RP-based, try City of Arabel in the NwN Open Worlds.

I was always more partial to 'Escape from Underdark' on the persistent worlds.

I used to play a Dark Sun persistent world in NWN that was pretty awesome. I was always kind of bummed that NWN 2 was set up in such a way to make persistent worlds much more difficult to do.
