I have been spoiled by great games that have a definite beginning and end. I liked F3 and F:NV, but I'm hesitant about F4. I'm not exactly sure why.
I mean, I got a PS4 for Christmas. I haven't even hooked it up yet. The thought of sticking it onto my entertainment center just made me start up ME3 and The Last of Us again.

Well if you have it, play it. I didn't finish Skyrim because of the same reasons of the directionlessness that people have been saying about FO4, but I finished it because I am invested in the game's world. I may or may not be playing it again.

I bought a PS4 forever ago, and every time I think of buying a new game for it I remember that I have The Last of Us.
And I just re-played all of the Mass Effect games.
So +1 to this. (Also, does this mean we're getting old?)
I never finished Skyrim because I was busy picking flowers and being a vampire. Then I gave my 360 to my kid and got the PS4. I'm really loving Fallout 4. I'm definitely playing post apocalyptic sims though. I'm happy.
I too was happy to be playing FO:Sims, but when I decided to get back on the roller coaster it drifted. In FO:NV, when I decided to take a game break that was at my pacing, and when I was ready I got grabbed and spun though the whirlwind tale of a thousand shards of post-apocalypse.
Both Mass Effect 2 and 3 have DLCs portraying an entirely different game, which is awesome in itself. Dragon Age: Origins has one of these too, only it's called Dragon Age: Awakening.
Fallout 4 desperately needs this, or something resembling a complete story, even if it's separate from ether main story. When I replay FO4, I will focus on story only and see how it flows.
I think it will have, eventually? Since they had that season pass they couldn't really say they would know what they would be doing with it it. So fingers crossed it will be in that.
Fallout, the plethora of zombie games, and other Bethesda incarnations are the reasons why for me gaming is dead. I don't see much difference between Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Fallout 4 that really makes it worth it.

Kind of like how WoD: Paris by Night is a lot different than WoD: Hoboken by Night, huh? In the same way Drake's version of Hotline Bling is ALOT different than Erykah Badu's?
Different plot. Different setting. Similar mechanics Same routines.
I don't have high hopes for games. I may see how EvE: Valkyrie reviews before getting a PS4. Until then, I'll fiddle with my scotch, fountain pens, and my wife's tits.
Besides, if you are older than eighteen and your nipples go hard like a girl over what Todd Howard will shit out next, maybe it is time to engage in the real world more.
Fallout, Skyrim, and Dishonored all have some kind of weird, bleak, hopeless atmospheres that are litmus tests for our culture. They speak volumes where we are at philosophically, politically, and ontologically.
If I want to be depressed I'll watch Steel Magnolias with my mother-in-law.

Mind you, I understand your viewpoint. I was sick of Deadpool before someone decided to make a serious (heavy on the sarcasm quotes around "serious") Deadpool movie. I was fueled by the indignant nerd rage over his characterization in that Wolverine movie.
But you know, I try to be adult enough to let people enjoy what they enjoy, even if it's a childish power-fantasy. I'll try not to whip out my "lol I have a real life"-sized dick when someone starts talking about the next godawful comic book franchise, or sportsball game oh my god my fantasy league player just scored three yards on a rush, or whatever turns you specifically on, because from a certain point of view quite a lot of things turn out to be very much like quite a lot of other things.
Mostly because I used to be that person, and in hindsight that person was a self-righteous asshole.

As a more productive aside, I've been having an ongoing discussion about Hearthstone (I generally also hate CCGs) and how Blizzard has a talent for distilling things that other people have done, for longer and possibly better, and make these things their own. After playing a bit of Hearthstone, I can't deny that it's The Warcraft CCG. I played a bit of the tabletop Warcraft card game and that didn't have that undeniable identity; it was kind of fun, but it was more interpretive than definitive.
And that kind of discussion can be interesting, whether you're talking about computer games, card games, moments in world history, or differences in similar species of tree. (Fern v. Pine, fight!)

I love Deadpool, because often this sort of behavior is presented in a way that makes me laugh. Sometimes the content of something isn't what makes it amusing or entertaining, but the presentation of it.

The Last of Us, while not technically a zombie game, is the reason why I'm getting excited about gaming again. If you've played it, you know why. It is blindingly amazing.
Otherwise, I agree with you, to an extent. F3 and F:NV felt very similar to me. I liked them well enough, but I don't really care much about what happens to my PC. And those games sort of focus on what the PC is all about.
Contrast that with Mass Effect. I want to know what happens to Mordin Solus, or Jack, or Shepard. You don't have as much control on what happens, but you have a bloody story to work with here that raises all sorts of questions. Can Joker and EDI have a successful relationship? Will I ever get to bang Aria T'Loak?
So, count me in the crowd of gamers that are tired of open-world games. I like something with a well-written story and dialogue.

Side note on the console gaming talk... I have a PS4 and just got an Xbox 1, spoiler alert - PS4 is WAY better.
Anyone who thinks a zombie apocalypse or a world like the post-war Fallout one would be "cool" or "neat" needs to read Cormac McCarthy's The Road...
I'd rather be motor boatin' some tig ol' bitties than playing the same damn story over, and over, and over, and over, and over. Hobbies are one thing. Casual gaming is another. But in general, gaming is seriously ruining the potential of men. We have traded reality for an ersatz one.
Imagine! You could be shooting a gun, Thenomain. In real life! Feel the recoil and not just the vibration of some dildoesque controller. Smell the sulfur.
But I imagine most gamers really have not been around real guns. The sight of one would probably make them trigger.
I'm not tired of open world games but I understand @Ganymede's...exhaustion? with them. Particularly where Fallout 4 is concerned. If feels like the game is more like a one-note open world sim than anything else to me. And I was going to explain this thought but I just deleted five paragraphs of TL;DR and just boiled it down to that one sentence.
Forgive my interjection, but.
Fallout 4's real problem is that it was made for a more dedicated type of gamer. The kind of gamer who posts five page long rants when someone says "this game is really hard. Why this game so hard?" that attack your dedication to gaming, your intellect, and your sexual prowess.
First off, the game's tutorials are basic as fuuuuuuuuuuck. Apparently there are extensive help-files buried in the PC version of the game. Those don't exist if you got it for console, and double-don't exist if you bought the digital version (ahem). And all the tutorials I've found on the internet to date have been kind of shit, because see above.
Second, locations are no longer geared to character level. Difficulty increases the further East and especially South you go. You are not given a meaningful warning about this but you are given quests that send you into Super Mutant Suicider territory while you're still carrying a BB gun and uncustomized wet toilet paper armor.
Do I still like the game? Absolutely I did. But casual it is not.

Fallout 4 is my favorite game of 2015, and probably 2014 and 2016. Maybe I am just a junkie, but I love it. It is not perfect, and it is not the best game I have ever played.
But it is deep. It is pretty. It has fun mechanics, and an awesome world. Do I sometimes miss my old timey 3/4 view isometric Fallout CRPGs of yore where I could murder kids and be a pitfighting pornstar grave robber? Of course I do, especially when visiting Little Lamplight in FO3.
And yeah, there are lots of small issues here and there, but I have spent over a week of my life exploring and playing this game. I am on my 3rd playthrough and have yet to be to many places.
tl;dr I like it!
