Mine's held up OK, except for the hinges, which are shot. I'm planning to piece together a desktop soon.

Add: The "Z" key on my keyboard randomly quit, so I had to replace it. That's a good thing about Toshiba laptops -- replacing things like the keyboard is much, much easier than it is on other laptop designs. It was literally just a case of prying up the plastic strip at the top and taking out four screws.

I looooooooove my Toshiba -- the SO broke my desktop the other day trying to help, so I had to haul my 7 year old (oh geez I've had it forever) laptop out to use for the time being. The keyboard is toast, but I plug my gaming one into it and I'm golden. There have been very few functional problems with it.

We've had two Toshiba laptops that managed to last for 3-5 years in spite of having two children using them. One of them is STILL working now even though it belongs to a teenaged boy who's known for his harsh treatment of electronics. Yes, there were a few issues over the years, mainly with power sources and hard drives, but overall I was happy that they lasted as long as they did. It wasn't expected.

My laptops have been Asus and MSI. They're both pretty good, but damned if they don't get heat issues.

ASUS seem to have heat issues, but are pretty durable. Plus, they are cheap on Newegg.

That they are! That is why I usually go with them. I got the MSI because I did not want windows 8. Turns out most of the academic software I was going to use wasn't compatible with windows 8. I'll call it worth it.

Also, I got my prescription early. Suck it, brain. Your reign of terror is weakening.

I got an Acer laptop from Newegg. No heat issues so far, and Windows 8 can run with an XP shell pretty well so I didn't feel like I was having a clunky touch-screen thrown at me. I've had it almost a year now and there hasn't been a single hiccup.

Edit: It might not have been Newegg. I just know I bought it from the internets.

I just got an HP laptop, it's nothing fancy, but it does what I need it to do.

I fucking hate Windows 8.1 though.

If Windows' history is anything to go by, Windows 10 will be the most amazeballs OS that will be seen for at least a year and a half.

@ThatOneDude That's fine, as long as it stops assuming my laptop screen is a touchpad. I could have gotten one like that, but I already have a tablet.

I want to put things on my desktop, dammit.
I want to turn off the swooping thing when I use the touchpad.

I do like that it's easy to make a backup, though I didn't like that I had to buy a USB drive to do it, rather than get disks. They're cheap, sure. But argh!

My sister has lived in the same apartment for about 5 or 6 years. She has a pitbull mix that has been temperament tested (had to be according to old management in order to stay) and has had the entire time. She's a sweet dog, loves everyone and everything, including my cats. New management just took over and she received a notice they aren't renewing her lease and she has 2 weeks to get out. She can't find anywhere else that will take her and her dog. She's having to stay with my parents while the dog stays with her boyfriend at his house. Fuck you new management. Fuck you. This on top of other concerns like needing a car, having to go to the doc to have a suspicious lump removed and god knows. (Biopsy ended up being clear, but understandably this was still upsetting). So yeah, fuck new management piling on with dumb rules about a dog that just happens to have pit among God knows in her.

I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.

To be fair, new management probably also equals new insurance. A lot of insurance companies jack the costs up if a landlord allows "dangerous" breeds.

However, two weeks notice to move out? That's sketchy. She should check what tenants' rights are guaranteed by the state. She ought to have, at minimum, a month to clear out (though she may want to be gone sooner).

I'd check the lease first. Most include provisions related to terminating the lease or not renewing it after termination. At first blush, the new management appears to be nothing illegal.

                                      Non-deterministic hardware issues.

My SSD is burned out. Fine. My motherboard had to be changed. Fine. But I'm still having weird issues with a brand new installation of Windows (and Mint straight out failed to install at all), so what does that mean? It could be the power supply, but do I want to spend $100+ on a hunch, or do I risk it destroying more components if that's the culprit after all? All I can do that doesn't involve shelling out cash is a memcheck overnight, and in the mean time I have a brand new fancy CPU running off of a HDD installation.

Sounds like they wanted an administrative assistant who can use Quicken. Did the application ask how many words a minute you can type?
