Where's @Shavalyoth? I should ask if she'll un-kill my character and let me come play. 😸

Unless you got banned, I'm sure you could come play.

I got pseudo "uninvited" for bitching about stuff on WORA early last year and my character was killed off screen according to the wiki.

Ah. Any character that isn't given an IC reason for not being around and having left the city becomes fodder for use in plotlines etc. There have been numerous idled out characters that got killed off in plottage.

Sounds like a bit of an asinine policy (and not one I've ever heard of being used anywhere else, with the exception of people who disappear amidst IC conflict), and I'm assuming it's designed to let staff take shots at people they don't like.

Without some pre-existing, and noted, understanding about player leave, it sounds like a good idea to me. I'm not much of a fan of freezing, despite how much I myself have abused it. Besides, killing off new "NPCs" for plot purposes sounds like a good way to use an otherwise wasted resource.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea to me as well. I am not, at all, a fan of the freezing thing.

I'm pretty positive it's nothing personal given the wide spread of PC's that have been nuked that way.

Most of the dead characters seem to have notes of "killed or captured by TFV". Given the vagueness, I'm assuming those are the people who dared to commit the horrible crime of idling out and/or freezing. My character specifically just has "killed by hunters" and my character's ghoul got a "killed by something?" (lol). Some people just have "Suicided?"

Seems less about inspiring plot and more telling people to fuck off. But that's just my take. If someone perma-freezes to make another character, sure kill them. I don't think idling out warrants that, though.

That's one of the stupidest policies I've ever heard of. Wow. Talk about penalizing your players for having a life.

I mean some things make sense (you need to give up your rank if you go away for two months) but that's because they block other people's gameplay otherwise. This is just absurd.

I think it gives story to characters that would otherwise just be forgotten completely. Though.. the reasons for the deaths seem kinda lame. I'd aim more for giving them a more epic end if it's a char that was pretty regularly played.

There's so much shit you have to handwave for a MUSH to make sense, that I don't think "wow, Joe hasn't been around for 6 weeks AND IS SUDDENLY BACK" is anywhere near gamebreaking and doesn't warrant that sort of policy. You can go a year of actively playing a game pretty easily without meeting half the other characters anyways, most people aren't going to notice.

I would like to think that if you have the social skills to have a life that you would be nice enough to drop your staff a line telling them that your PC has gone back to Bumfuck, Iowa for a little bit. Because that's all you need to do.

You don't have to tell staff what you're doing ICly if you're playing day-to-day, why does an absence require an IC explanation to prevent staff from killing your bit? Every MUSH ever seems to have done just fine with a freezer.

ETA : No way is randomly killing Player Characters off-screen with vague shit like "killed by something?" not done out of OOC spite for one reason or another, even if it is just 'fuck this asshole for disappearing'. Use NPCs for your fucking "plot".

We're gonna have to agree to disagree. IMO - Unless a player is ducking out to avoid ICA=ICC, you have no grounds to kill off somebody just because they aren't playing anymore and it seems pretty shitty to me to do so.

Being a staffer who lays claim to unplayed PCs for story use, up to and including killing them off, you would have to be saying I am lying to stand by your point that 100% of the time it is motivated by anger or anything other than story and setting needs.

I don't care if you think it's shitty, if you don't see the value, then don't play where it happens. That is your right. Don't conflate your dislike of something with suspect motivations on another's part.

If I wasn't clear, that is exactly what I'm saying.

If you are BFFs with Joe, and he up and disappears off the face of the planet, I'm completely confident you aren't going to randomly decide to kill off his character because 'omg plot'.

                                          Then you have trust issues.

You trust your staff with killing your PCs while you are actively playing them, but not once you've given them up? That is some fucked up shit right there.

Characters have an impact on setting. The more integrated with that setting they are, the more they need to be dealt with once the player gives up control. That can mean anything from being a name on a list, to being used as a NPC, to yes, dying.

Again, don't play there. Or anywhere where there is staff. No one wants to deal with your paranoia.

Nothing irritates me more than a PC that just goes idle, especially when that PC is intimately tied into others' IC lives and plots. If you cannot be bothered to drop a message in two weeks' time, then, no, I have little sympathy for you.

If you are suddenly knocked out for whatever reason, e-mail is not difficult to send to the people at Kingsmouth.

Any scenario I can think of where a player cannot do either of the two above courtesy steps leads to the conclusion that the player has bigger problems than the discontinuation of their fictional character.
