Having peeked at the Geist 2e rules, they are now very specifically not alive.

There's plenty in the 2e manuscript that says they're actually alive again. It even uses those specific words, "alive again". There's also a condition called "Dead" which happens to the Bound when they die again and their Geist goes on a rampage. The way they resolve it is to return from the dead once more.

There are many lines that say or imply they're no longer dead once they take the Bargain:

"You may not be dead, but you’ve died and now you live the difference."

"When the force keeping you alive wants something, you have no choice but to feel it."

"No one manner of death guarantees someone will choose to Bargain their way back to life."

"But Sin-Eaters share one conviction: If human will can turn back death, it can accomplish anything."

This reminds me. How do you feel about revealing things about the character through narration and not in any visible ways? For example: "Bob sits down and grows silent. Ever since he returned from the war he's been reserved in social settings with people he doesn't know well. He lifts his glass and...".

I do this mainly when I'm filling in details that the other character would likely know, but the player might not. As an example, if my character and theirs have known each other for 20 years, and something my character does is likely to be familiar to them, or carry some significant meaning.

    • RE: Re: Haunted Memories

The code isn't freely available anywhere, though I think that some of the various coders have snippets of things they did up on their github pages. That said, I currently own the game and have access to all the code, and know how to contact many of the coders to ask about sharing their code from it.

Keep in mind, though, that HM is rhost, so much of the code might not be readily portable to other codebases.

Is there anything in particular you're looking for?

@Ashen-Shugar said in Dealing with Staff:

When you go off to 'teach a lesson' you wind up learning more then the person who you're trying to instruct.

I definitely agree with this. It comes back to my statement about acting like a mature adult.

Be aware of what you really want out of your interactions with the person. If it's for them to do their job as a staffer, then that's great. Actually being courteous, concise, and professional is almost always the best way to get that, and if it doesn't work it's likely that nothing will.

If what you really want is to get them in trouble, or to beat them, or honestly just about anything else than simply getting the +job/etc. done, then chances are very good that the problem is at least partly you. There's even a good chance the problem is mostly or entirely you. So the first step is to fix yourself, because you're ultimately the only person whose actions you'll ever have full control over.

      @Catsmeow said:

I feel like people here know more of the story on the jump on the person-ness going on. However, I would like to remind people that sometimes staffers are DICKS.

This is true, I agree with you completely, but everything I said applies no matter who is at fault, and how big a dick the staffer is. The absolutely best way to deal with it still to: (1) make sure you're not being a dick yourself and deal with them in a calm, reasonable, polite manner that covers what needs to be done for your play to continue and nothing else, or (2) leave the game. There's possibly (3) try to have a calm conversation about it with them and work things out, but in general if someone needs this advice in the first place, there's a good chance they're not suited to doing that without it spiraling out of control.

The first option can include taking the evidence of the problems to someone who can actually take action on it, sometimes. It depends on the situation. If there's really nothing that can be done, like if they're the HeadWiz and not beholden to anyone, then you either just live with it or you leave.

@WTFE said in Dealing with Staff:

While you have that "I must WIN" attitude there is no hope at all for you to coexist peacefully

I have to agree with this. This statement, to me, says very clearly that while you might not be the whole problem, you are least part of the problem. The fact that "winning" comes to your mind in the situation at all strongly suggest it, and it's likely that the first thing you need to do is stop being part of the problem.

      Your original question was this:

How do you, as a player, deal with a member of staff that you have a very negative interaction with.

To be a bit blunt, the answer to this question is to be a mature adult. You do that by either removing yourself from the situation (by leaving the game), or put your feelings aside and deal with them in a straightforward, polite, professional manner that leaves no room for anyone to criticize your behavior. At that point the ball is in their court, and if that doesn't work then your choices are to bring the evidence of their misconduct to someone who can do something about it (if that person exists), to leave, or accept that whatever they're doing is something you'll have to deal with if you choose to stay.

    • RE: International Music.

There was a while when I would often ask players on MUs in countries around the world about musicians from their country. I've found out about quite a few that way, and many of them I still listen to regularly.

There are plenty of other artists from all over the place that I listen to fairly often. With the list below, I'm mostly going to stick to ones that so far nobody I've personally introduced them to had ever heard of them before. Some of them are more well known than others (especially from English speaking countries). There's basically no rhyme or reason to genres:

      India:
      Avial - Aadu Paambe (Malayalam)

      South Africa:
      LARK - Moonlight (English)
Die Heuwels Fantasties - Noorderlig (Afrikaans)

      Australia:
Love Outside Andromeda - Made of Broken Glass (English)
      Little Birdy - Bodies (English)
Birds of Tokyo - Wild At Heart (English)
Karnivool - Deadman (English - Same singer as Birds of Tokyo, very different band)
Eskimo Joe - Foreign Land (English - Kind of interesting in that this song was inspired by the fact the band was in New York for a show when they found out Heath Ledger, also Australian, had died, and that he died just a couple of blocks from where the singer was at the time of his death)

      France
Émilie Simon - Fleur De Saison (French)

      Austria
Waldeck - Make My Day (English)

      Canada:
controller.controller - Tigers, Not Daughters (English)
Hawksley Workman - Autumn's Here (English)
Paper Moon - Turning Colours into Greys (English)

      Germany:
Haujobb - More Than Us (English)
My Sleeping Karma - Moksha (instrumental stoner metal)

I also listen to a whole lot of metal and industrial from all over the place in Europe, and quite a bit of trip hop, of which a good portion originates in England (and Bristol specifically), but I won't I'm getting tired of listing things. If people want more details I'll provide them, though 🙂

At least some of the Steam sales this winter are terrible, and not enough to tempt me to buy the game. There are quite a few games I'd be interested in checking out if the normal price went down AND they were discounted by the 50% off they are now, but they're not worth $30/20/15 or whatever to me.

It does. In California, for instance, it requires a court order establishing domestic partnership:

      http://www.sos.ca.gov/registries/domestic-partners-registry/frequently-asked-questions#question3

edit: sorry, didn't read closely enough. It only requires a court order if you're under 18, but it still involves registering

You're probably right about that, but it's a poor choice of wording if that's what they mean. In many places, like here in California, domestic partnership is a specific legal status with certain requirements that many people living together with their SO don't meet.

    • RE: White Wolf Survey

I find if interesting that their "what best describes your marital status" question allows for polyamory but has no option that involves being in a relationship, unmarried, but living with your significant other:

      • Single
      • In a relationship but not living together
      • In a domestic partnership or civil union
      • Married
      • Multiple consensual partners
      • I would rather not answer

I would just assume they're talking about married vs unmarried, except for the fact that other options exist to indicate being in a relationship but not married.

      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • RE: RL Anger

There are also quite a few reasonably priced backup software solutions that can do most of the hard work for you. Even cloud backups are okay, if they let you create your own encryption key that doesn't get sent to them (which many do) and use good encryption (many do).

For most people the risk of data loss (device being lost, HD dying, ransomware, etc) is much greater than that of data being stolen from a cloud backup solution, and if it's also encrypted the risk is pretty minimal.

Yet another reminder about the importance of backups.

Backups that AREN'T connected to your computer the rest of the time, since backups that the ransomware encrypts when it hits your PC don't help very much, do they?

    • RE: Shadows Over Reno

I have to agree with @Arkandel in this case, to a point. I don't mind if people cancel scenes they were going to run because something came up. I don't even mind that much if they cancel at the last minute... occasionally.

I do start to mind if they're regularly canceling at the last minute, though. I often plan my day around things like +events. If I'm signed up for an +event, I've quite likely declined other plans, missed out on other opportunities, etc in order to be there. They might just be other fun-time, relatively unimportant things, but the point stands. Maybe I declined going on a raid in WoW, or to a movie with friends, or whatever else.

For me personally, I would rather not have events planned at all, or have them canceled a day or more earlier because the ST probably can't make it, than have them canceled just before they're supposed to happen because they ST waited until the last minute to be sure whether they could or not.

If it happens every once in a while that's fine. Shit happens, and sometimes people don't know before hand that they're unlikely to be able to make it. When it becomes a repeated pattern it starts to look less like last minute things popped up just this once, and more like someone not being respectful of the time that others have committed.

    • RE: Reality Levels and WOD Realms

      @Hexagon
I logged in to check, and HM has rlevels:

Level: real Value: 0x00000001 Desc: desc-interpreter
Level: shadow Value: 0x00000002 Desc: shadow-desc
Level: invis Value: 0x00000004 Desc: desc-interpreter
Level: twilight Value: 0x00000008 Desc: desc-interpreter
Level: all Value: 0x0000000f Desc: desc-interpreter

The Hedge was not actually an rlevel, just a different grid. The Shadow one was useful because the rooms were all the same in the Shadow, but it allowed for different descs in shadow/real. Extensive use was made of it, and most of the main grid rooms and many builds had shadow-descs set.

If I recall correctly, early on the Twilight one did make people invisible except to other people in Twilight. I never made much use of it (and it didn't get used very much in general), so I don't remember if those policies changed with time, or what they changed to. I don't remember the invis one getting used at all.

    • RE: Reality Levels and WOD Realms

Haunted Memories had a bunch of Reality Level stuff configured to allow for things like going in Twlight (using the same grid), the Shadow (with its own grid), and the Hedge (its own grid). In general we didn't really run into trouble, but if I recall correctly the Twilight functionality still allowed people to see you as far as look and stuff, it just showed you differently on 'look' and so on.

It has been a while, so I don't remember for sure, but I do recall that there was a heavy use of Reality Levels, and it was nice for a lot of stuff.

I actually think Reno sits kinda on the edge of such a set of circumstances. It could just be that nothing continues to happen and people drift away... or we might collectively look around and realize some of us are pretty damn good roleplayers. I've had great scenes there in both Vampire and (in a PrP) Werewolf; there's no lack of talent.

I think we have a good set of people in Vampire that mostly means we need just enough staff guidance to let us do our work, and we can probably make plenty of stuff happen and have a great time. I don't think we even need much. Just someone guiding the framework a little bit will go a long way.

The only mistake I really think has been made? They should have waited longer to allow alt applications. I think a week was too short a window: it should've been more like a month, what with the RL issues.

It would probably have been better if they held off on that,I agree.

As for all the other things I commented on, as I said then, none of it was really complaints, just observations about things that have been done that staff has done that have likely made their work load harder, rather than easier. None of them really hinderme, and I've had no issues personally with things being slow, so I'm just making observations/offering unsolicited advice.

I have been tempted to offer to help out temporarily with some of the drudgery like updating news files/room descs/wiki pages/etc, but I really don't want to staff permanently, and I'm not sure how useful or desired a week or two of part-time help would be. I also find myself happier just being a player, and only seeing one side of the curtain.
