Music is a passion. I love to listen to all sorts of music and am honestly one of the most eclectic people I know--everyone has genres they don't like, but I tend to find gems even in those genres I otherwise avoid like the plague. My country (Argentina) has a very particular and extensive history with rock, however. Starting around the late sixties and then onward, we have created some of--in my opinion and in a lot of other people's who know a lot more than me--some of the best rock and roll in the world. Now a days, it's super easy to share music the world over, so I figured I would make a thread here for people to share music that isn't commonplace--maybe music that isn't necessarily in English.

I bridge the gap with Attaque 77's 1998 album "Otras Canciones", in which they cover a lot of songs--some from English-language bands, but mostly local songs that you'd never expect to be put to punk or reggae or ska. They do a version of "Do You Wanna Dance?" ("Quieres tu bailar?") in Spanish, and the Ramones' "Beat on the Brat" in stunted English with hilarious pronunciation. I start with this because it's what we're listening to now, and what gave me the idea.

      Following that, I give you:

Patricio Rey & Sus Redonditos de Ricota and their 1985 debut album "Gulp!". Los Redonditos (short form name for the band) are one of Argentina's greatest rock bands--or they were until they split about a decade ago. They have a massive following here, with both rabid and chill fans. Many people don't like them, but they are almost universally outnumbered by those who do. Safe to say their style changes over the years, but until Ultimo Bondi a Finisterre, it remains very iconic and unique.

Los Piojos and their third album from 1996 "Tercer Arco". Los Piojos follow the previous band above's tradition of rock, but managed to create their own distinct sound. Both bands manage to have very unique and attention-grabbing vocalists who aren't known for their technique, but rather for how easy it is to recognize them.

Lastly, for now, Catupecu Machu's second album and first live recording "A Morir!!". Catupé, as they're usuallly referred to by fans, was a bit dirtier, a bit more homely than the others, but one of my favorite local bands back in the day. In fact, there are certain moments on this CD where you can hear me yelling--singing, even--along with the rest of the crowd.

Those are my picks for now. "Gulp!" is almost as old as I am! The rest are from when I was in high school. I hope you guys enjoy it and share some international music you've discovered. And if you do like it and want to listen to more Argentina rock, ping me here or in private or whatever--there's a fuckton of the stuff.

"Excuse the hell out of you. He's a bag of dicks. I'm a carefully curated box of cocks." -- to @GirlCalledBlu upon being misrepresented.

I've been trolling Spotify's Top 100 and Viral 100 charts for Hispanophone countries so I can get some actual listening practice, since I live in the most Whitebread town in the USA. Argentina's list never seems to have much rock-rock on it, but it has some nice alt rock and pop stuff that is very entertaining.

I will look at these, too. I may hit you up for some suggestions.

I listen to Italian and Japanese Eurobeat.

It's mostly Italian produced for a Japanese audience, but some Japanese made a few Eurobeat tracks as well.

            https://youtu.be/ESZ426pUwD0
            https://youtu.be/XF5q7ST22sg
            https://youtu.be/S8772ABuRbM

            These are Italian Eurobeat tracks.

The lyrics are hilariously poignant even though it sounds like random engrishu.

I heavily recommend Juliette Noureddine- she's a French singer-songwriter with a very eccentric bend. Her songs run from serious to the humorous , silly and grotesque.

Here's a translation of one of her songs to English:

Also, he's super nice and apparently big in Pennsic and a Ren Faire dork.

Alright, so I'll add a few things that I like in here. I've been meaning to post here since this went up but, you know. School. It does bad things to my brainmeats. @Coin can feel free to make fun of me or whatever.

Note: I have diverse musical tastes, so I'll try and put these in some semblance of genre, but it'll be loose at best. I make no promises of accuracy.

Edit: I can't figure out how to force line breaks for cleanliness of reads, so.

Thread necro! Because new year, new music, all that stuff.

So I've been listening to all the Spanish music that I can, because I really need listening comprehension practice and, well, I'm too poor to afford the kinds of calling plans that would let me call @Coin and make him converse with me. Some of it is meh, but I've found a few gems I really like. For instance!

                        Morat - Cómo te atreves

It's a fun, upbeat little song with a happy little folky banjo line throughout. Even if you can't understand the words, it's mood music.

Also kudos on Romeo Santos! I'm in love with Bachata. But that's what I get for marrying a Puerto Rican. Aventura is a sure bet too.

I'm in love with Childish Gambino right now.

Let's put a little more color into it, man!

                              Aterciopelados (Colombian)
Patricio Rey & sus Redonditos de Ricota (Argentine)
                              Calle 13 (Puerto Rican)

Mano Negra (French, actually, but multicultural; Manu Chao's old band)
                              Molotov (Mexican)
                              Reincidentes (Spaniards)
                              Kortatu (Basque)
                              Ska-P (Basque/Cataloanian)

My list goes on and on and on and on and on. All of these are all very different from each other, too, so if you're interested in finding something new, don't just give up because you don't like one of them.

I ended up omitting a lot of Argentine bands in favor of diversity. If you want just Argentine bands, hit me up.

Mildly off topic since one of bands is from the US, but if your tastes run along Punk lines and you are looking for Spanish language music check out Molotov and Union 13, the first is from Mexico the second from Southern California but both are mainly Spanish language music.

There was a while when I would often ask players on MUs in countries around the world about musicians from their country. I've found out about quite a few that way, and many of them I still listen to regularly.

There are plenty of other artists from all over the place that I listen to fairly often. With the list below, I'm mostly going to stick to ones that so far nobody I've personally introduced them to had ever heard of them before. Some of them are more well known than others (especially from English speaking countries). There's basically no rhyme or reason to genres:

                                      India:
                                      Avial - Aadu Paambe (Malayalam)

                                      South Africa:
                                      LARK - Moonlight (English)
Die Heuwels Fantasties - Noorderlig (Afrikaans)

                                      Australia:
Love Outside Andromeda - Made of Broken Glass (English)
                                      Little Birdy - Bodies (English)
Birds of Tokyo - Wild At Heart (English)
Karnivool - Deadman (English - Same singer as Birds of Tokyo, very different band)
Eskimo Joe - Foreign Land (English - Kind of interesting in that this song was inspired by the fact the band was in New York for a show when they found out Heath Ledger, also Australian, had died, and that he died just a couple of blocks from where the singer was at the time of his death)

                                      France
Émilie Simon - Fleur De Saison (French)

                                      Austria
Waldeck - Make My Day (English)

                                      Canada:
controller.controller - Tigers, Not Daughters (English)
Hawksley Workman - Autumn's Here (English)
Paper Moon - Turning Colours into Greys (English)

                                      Germany:
Haujobb - More Than Us (English)
My Sleeping Karma - Moksha (instrumental stoner metal)

I also listen to a whole lot of metal and industrial from all over the place in Europe, and quite a bit of trip hop, of which a good portion originates in England (and Bristol specifically), but I won't I'm getting tired of listing things. If people want more details I'll provide them, though 🙂

Also kudos on Romeo Santos! I'm in love with Bachata. But that's what I get for marrying a Puerto Rican. Aventura is a sure bet too.

I'm in love with Childish Gambino right now.

Pfft, Cafe Tacuba and Mana? Really?

Let's put a little more color into it, man!

I ended up omitting a lot of Argentine bands in favor of diversity. If you want just Argentine bands, hit me up.

I do use Spotify and you're welcome to stalk me on it but I don't really listen to local music on it, frankly. Right now I'm super into The Holophonics.

Perhaps off topic but I wish cellphone service providers in Canada made unlimited plans available - then I could just grab Spotify Premium. As it stands it's a no-go.
