@Ganymede Yeah, I took one look at the article and was like, "This is a case for eminent domain at best. " And even that would be more generous than he deserves.

There is a 496 bed hospital in Philly that shuttered last year due to bankruptcy. The current owner is offering to rent the otherwise vacant space to the city at "deeply discounted rates" of a $1million per month.

I swear to Christ, if my test results come back positive, I'm going to find this motherfucker, tackle him to the ground, and spit right in his mouth.

@Ganymede JFC. I feel like I just need to start walking around in a shirt that says "I apologize on behalf of white people everywhere. No, really. Sorry."

@Auspice I laughed way harder than should've -- mostly because it sent me into another coughing fit.

@Jennkryst If you need something, let me or @insomniac7809 know. We're currently home sick awaiting test results, but once we're better, we'll help if we can. We're just across the border in Philly and willing to do porch drop-offs complete with awkward waving from our car.

Absolutely. I would be happy to anony-drop stuff to her, if that would be easier. PM me what they need and I’ll get it out there.

You are AMAZING. I'll check in with her and see if she's doing okay or not. Even a year ago, she was too sick to leave the house without major assistance and her eldest son was not handling it well, so I really, really appreciate even the offer.

      I concur with Admiral.

I live in the Dayton, Ohio area. I am happy to assist anyone for anything. Legal advice, of course, is my specialty, but I have time, cash, and a pretty good network of resources to draw from.

Could I possibly put you in touch with my Aunt's family if they need anything? She's in VERY bad health, my uncle's isn't great, and with as many grandkids as they have to worry about, I'm not sure how good of a job my cousins might be doing with her right now. They live in West Carrollton.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:

So now that we're all home and looking for "boredom busters" for ourselves and possibly our children, I'd like to recommend this awesome one I found!

It's called "contacting your government representatives and demanding to know WTF they're doing and that you're going to hold them personally responsible for their (in)actions on this".

If you don't know who they are and are in the US, you can look them up -- complete with a quick link to their contact information -- at http://myreps.datamade.us/

Personal requests from several friends of mine in the medical field, including two ICU charge nurses, is not just activating the Defense Production Act (which has already happened) but invoking its powers (which have not) to force major manufacturers to shift production towards PPE for healthcare workers. 3M doesn't need to be making Scotch tape right now. They need to be making face shields and gloves.

Look, if they hadn't shot James Cole in the airport in 1996, we'd all be fine.

So this isn't a "resources" post as much as it is a Strong Suggestion (tm).

The governor shutdown my entire state to control coronavirus spread, which includes all non-essential (basically anything that's not a pharmacy, grocery store, laundromat, or post office) retail. This morning, I spoke to two different friends who are small business owners that I've been a long-time customer of. They're freaking out -- not just for themselves, but for their employees

I realize things are a shitshow right now. But. BUT. If you're lucky enough to not have a massive financial impact hanging overhead -- maybe you're able to WFH, maybe you're in healthcare, maybe you just have a crapload of money -- please please please consider making your purchases through the online sites of independent shops and small local companies. Jeff Bezos doesn't need your money right now, but I know people who are in tears because they had to layoff their entire workforce yesterday in the hopes that their employees would at least qualify for unemployment.

In the meantime, for all those 'essential' businesses?

Be kind. Say thank you. Tip people you can tip. They're working their asses off through this panic, potentially putting themselves at risk, and most of the positions are minimum wage or low-paying jobs. The absolute very least those people deserve are our patience and kindness.

I wonder if anyone has suggestions on shows to stream that are not dark shows - as dark shows increases my anxiety. I am self isolating looking for movies, funny shows, distracting shows to stream on netflix, hulu, disney + or prime. I am open to suggestions if anyone has thoughts!

I mentioned it else-thread, but Amazon is releasing the first season of Julia Child's cooking show from waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the days of black and white TV for free through March 31st. There's a bunch of other stuff they're doing that with, too, but Julia Child fits my exact need of cheerful, soothing, and funny -- all while being interesting enough to keep what's left of my crapped-out and drugged-up attention span and without being so intense that I care if I fall asleep.

It's like the Great British Baking Show, 1960s style.

In that case, I'm just gonna spam you guys. I don't have kids, but I'm still FB with my childhood bestie and her mom -- who became the principal at our elementary school before retiring. Right now, Mrs. J (which I will still call her when I'm 50, tyvm), is flooding her feed with resources for her former students, former teachers, and parents.

The Cincinnati Zoo will also be doing a live Facebook stream featuring one of their animals every day at 3PM, followed by an activity for kids to do at home.

      Today is Fiona the hippo.

ETA: The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy will be doing something similar. Every day at 10AM they will be reading a shark-themed book and hosting a Q&A session to follow for kids.
