RE: What do you look for in a game?
I suppose I should add this.
My main expectation of a game is to entertain. That supersedes just about anything at all. If I'm playing and not having fun then no combination of theme, mechanics or character concept will keep me there.
The sole exception is if I'm expecting things to change, but it'd need to be pretty imminently. The days where I looked at games I thought had potential but were staffed badly and waited for them to change their ways are well behind me; these days it's no fun => no @Arkandel.

RE: RL Anger
TV show memes.
God fucking dammit, it's THE NEXT DAY. I'm already bombarded on web sites and social media with image memes about last night's The Walking Dead and Westworld's episodes which are impossible to avoid because by the time I realise I'm not supposed to be reading them I've already read them.
I get it if it's been half a week but it's not even twenty four hours.

RE: Fallcoast Domain Expired
I can't look at most of those IP ranges without cringing.

and in all honesty I wish more games would adopt it, but it's an attitude that benefits from a very, very clear explication of what staff wants and doesn't want.
I've no horses whatsoever in this race but it sounds like staff was pretty clear about what they wanted. It's just the player in question didn't like the answer.

RE: Dead Celebrity Thread
I don't want to jinx it but one of humanity's moon-walking astronauts had to be air-lifted out of of the South Pole due to some sort of emergency. I will not write his name here. Come on, 2016, fuck off.

RE: Recycling characters
@Admiral I always keep at least my character descriptions around. I recycle the shit out of those.

@Auspice The truth? You can't handle the truth!
The pain in your chest wasn't random. That cat was hungry as the food dish was only half-full at the time; you just woke up too early.

RE: Disabilities and Mental Illness as Character Traits
@Auspice The thing is though there are legitimate fantasy tropes based on disabilities that are overcome. The blind archer, old and frail martial artist, slow-witted but massive warrior are pretty standard ideas.

I log into an RP game to RP.
It's a complex problem. For example in MMORPGs there are many people who want the gear raiding provides but don't like to raid. However unless they raid the gear isn't useful.
So why do they want it?

RE: Good TV
Since Westworld's season is over, without spoilers, I can say it was amazing. Two things in particular impressed me.
-
The amount of attention it paid to detail - it's highly re-watchable because of it. Eagle-eyed viewers on the interwebs have caught all sorts of obviously intentional minor things from earlier episodes I'd have missed even if I was watching it 24/7 though.
-
It told a full story beginning to end. Yes there are questions left, plenty of them, but it's no Lost; it didn't 'leave things for the audience to decide', it didn't hint at mysteries and not deliver, and there was no terrible cliffhanger at the end.
I can't wait for 2018 now.
Edit: Hah, @thebird... I was posting this when you were typing your question.
Great minds. Or maybe it's our programming.

RE: Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?
@Coin said in Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?:
I put yes, but there is a caveat:
I enjoy it more now, when I alot less time to it, than I did in the past, when it was a focus.
I think this is a more widespread issue with gaming in general because it's a very human thing for us to expect a return for our investment. Like... when a hobby - hell, when anything - becomes a big part of our lives since we just sink so many hours of the day into it then on an emotional level we wait something proportionate back from it. A payout, a win, recognition, something.
And... well, MUSHing doesn't have that. Gaming doesn't have it unless we're among the damn few who monetize and do it professionally. But otherwise even the most 'successful' among us won't ever see anything near the level such returns would have to make them worth the investment, so entertainment and whatever fulfillment that grants needs to be it.
Hell, it's not even like more mainstream forms of nerd-dom we can at least expect... if not recognition then awareness. Spending 3+ hours a night on something no one outside of the hobby even knows exists, and you'd have to explain it from the ground up to even get a confused 'oh, okay, I see' is... not easy.
That's a pretty tough pill to swallow but, I believe, it's essential that we do it knowingly.

RE: RL Anger
@Apocalycious The answer to that is: Implement a pull-backup system and you don't need to care.
Also remember folks: Backups you haven't successfully tested with a restore are
probablyworse than not having backups at all. -
RE: Pokemon Go
People want to sue because it's where the money is, and there's no point suing the moron - there's no profit in it. They need to sue someone bigger than that, but who? The phone maker is a hard target, as is the service provider... the app that's been making headlines and would be worried about bad press though? Nice juicy target.

RE: RL peeves! >< @$!#
Non-deterministic hardware issues.
My SSD is burned out. Fine. My motherboard had to be changed. Fine. But I'm still having weird issues with a brand new installation of Windows (and Mint straight out failed to install at all), so what does that mean? It could be the power supply, but do I want to spend $100+ on a hunch, or do I risk it destroying more components if that's the culprit after all? All I can do that doesn't involve shelling out cash is a memcheck overnight, and in the mean time I have a brand new fancy CPU running off of a HDD installation.

Why does a forum need to be influential to be valuable?
