I am in cheerleader mode for NaNoWriMo.

I suggest signing up for https://chatnano.net/ if your region is signed up for it (if they aren't, make them!). Mostly because a former MU*er and one of my best friends runs it and codes Timmy the ChatBot (https://twitter.com/BotTimmy). But also because the IRC community on chatnano is really awesome. Timmy hosts word wars and will tell you when one is running any time, any where. So even if YOUR region isn't running one, you can hop into a channel where one is.

(And since you can join any region in addition to your home region, feel free to join Utah - Elsewhere. That's the one run by my friend, Utoxin. He'll be happy to have you.)

Anyway, I'm not joining this year because I'm under massive deadlines at work where they, well, y'know, pay me to write. So it's hard to add NaNo on top of that I'm afraid.

Yeah, what with the whole "having to write briefs, motions, and memoranda while at work" thing, I'm very doubtful of my ability to come home and write ~1700 words per day.

It is doable and I have done it. But it wasn't easy (or really fun and I fell off the proverbial wagon halfway through).

And there are people who call themselves 'rebels' who count EVERYTHING they write even if it isn't strictly their novels. >.>

    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

I see a doctor on the 25th. I plan to ask about two things: allergies (ugh mine are so bad and OTC allergy meds are expensive) and ADHD meds.

I've never been so unfocused as I am these days. All my coping mechanisms have failed. Honestly, I didn't even realize until a handful of years ago that I had coping mechanisms. They were just.... built up over the course of my life and I guess once I had a working depression medication, the ADHD came to the forefront or.... maybe it has just gotten worse?

But I finally have a job I love and I know I have a chance to turn it from a contract into an employment offer and I'm terrified I won't make that happen because of my fucking ADHD. I go through some days where I get maybe a single hour of productivity out of myself and I hate it. I try all the tips and tricks and shit and none of it works. Hell, Friday was one of the most productive days I've had in weeks and I barely remember most of it because I was so doped up on cold medications. I half expect to go in tomorrow and find that the work I did do was garbage.

I just know I can't leave this visit on the 25th with yet another 'just sleep more' (I sleep fine) or 'just give your depression meds more time' (it's been over 3 years).

@Auspice As someone who has both allergies and ADHD and a few bonus things going on, would you like some advice on how to manage the doctor? I wish I didn't have experience, but...

      I have experience.

I honestly just wish I had someone who could go with me to advocate. I've got some things I've put off for years (looking at my hand here....) because what gets in the way is my anxiety. I'm on anxiety meds and they do help but I've found in the past that if I go into the doctor with a list of issues, once I get past one or two they tune me out and stop giving a fuck.

      @Selerik

So I'm personally really dicey on calling on the DSM-5 because it was released right before the findings on fibromyalgia were confirmed about it being a physical health condition and thus per the DSM-5 it's still considered a 'oh it's all in your head and because of your depression'

Which means I may run a huge risk of, if I call on DSM-5, having other issues I suffer brushed off.

But I do appreciate that. It's more a matter of... Like @Macha said, I guess being willing to get it all written down (though I once had a doctor just refuse to even keep talking to me when they saw I had a list of symptoms I'd been tracking, so it's hard for me to even do that now).

Ugh, bad doctors can fuck us up for life I swear.

My favorite coworker is out for a couple weeks for Sukkot.

Someone (there are people here who don't have assigned desks, so they'll borrow desks sometimes) is using his desk today and I have strong feelings about this.

Apparently someone has started stealing my dad's diabetes supply out of my parent's mailbox. So I guess that's a thing now.

I know medications are expensive, but jesus fucking christ you aren't 'getting back at the man' or anything when you do that. You're hurting someone else.

      I am so sorry 😞

On Tuesday I get to see Leigh Bardugo at an event she's doing here in Austin for her new book. Yeeeeee

I'm at the event, waiting my turn for the signing itself, listening to these girls giving a younger girl just starting high school giving her advice on finding good friends and it is amaze. ❤

Sometimes I am the fucking worst at self care.

I'm gonna be an hour later than usual (thank God for flexible hours) to work because my legs are pieces of shit today thanks to the storms yesterday so I slept an extra hour!

But at the same time I am here at the bus stop shivering in the wind because I checked the weather and thought 'high of 71? I won't need a jacket.'

Dumb bitch you have fibro and it's only 8am so it's only 60 right now.

Not to derail the thread, but you, me and others work in IT. The OS wars are alive and well on a variety of fronts.

      eh.

I work in IT. About half of us have windows machines, half have Apple.
My developer friends who I game/chat with have pretty much exclusively switched to Apple for development and prefer it for that environment, but game on Windows.

But for the ones that do, telling them it's all a big pharma conspiracy theory is nonsense.

      I get chemical depression.
I also get a kind of special depression that is only combated by going to the ocean every few years. 😉

I can't combat one with the other.

I can't go for a walk in the woods and get the same wonderful amazing feeling I get that I do by standing on a beach and feeling the sand between my toes and the ocean breeze in my hair.

But the feeling of standing in the surf is also completely negated if I'm not on medication that balances out the chemical fuckery in my head. I have to have both.

Just like if they hadn't cut out the cancer cells that were trying to dig into my spine, no amount of weird-ass plant cocktails and detox shit would have ever kept it from wreaking havoc on my body.

      @Selerik

My allergies are worse here in TX and have been terrible the past few weeks.
I did just get over an absolutely horrendous sinus infection.

...but I've been on singulair for about six months.

So either the singulair isn't working at all (which is entirely possible and while ADHD is the primary reason for a doc visit next week, allergies are another part), or it's not the reason. 😕

      But thank you. 🙂

One of the things that is quite heartening now is the level of involvement common with the parents and any therapists, counselors, or psychiatrists working with the kids in question.

      teachers, too.
I say this because part of my cert training has involved being educated about ODD (and the other disorders, illnesses, traumas, etc., that can affect a child and their learning).

THIS DOESN'T HELP... but it kind of explains things?

I was trying to explain to someone yesterday (HI @Arkandel!) that I can't do staycations because I am someone who, the instant I walk in the door at the end of the day from work, starts stressing out because homgIshouldstartcleaninganddoingchoresand...

I can't relax unless absolutely everything is done and taken care of and even then what if I should-

I don't know how people relax.

      What is relaxing?
