I’m getting burnout on a considerable amount of nostalgia bait.

I don't think sequels are nostalgia bait. If every episode is "focus on an old character," then sure--but it doesn't look like that will be the case.

“Look, it’s 7 of 9! Look, it’s Data! Look, Riker!” That’s bait. It makes me worried that they will focus on these characters and not on exploring new territory.

Or almost as bad: Exploring new territory the same way they did a decade ago.

With the exception of Jeri Ryan, I don’t have faith in the other non-Stewart actors to carry a new series. I know that Paramount/CBS can hire a director good enough to manage it, and Spiner seems to be playing the same ol’ Data from the little bit that we see, so I won’t nay-say it outright, but we’ve been down this road before in different contexts.

      We will see.

It was a ComicCon trailer. It's sort of the norm to throw in 'Hey! These names you love will be making a cameo!'

And that's what I feel the others are. Cameos. They'll be there, in the background, but certainly not a focus all the time. I mean, we saw other new characters just as much if not more than them in the trailer.

@Kanye-Qwest said in The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves):

IDK. Feels a lot like a disorder to me.

I get where the guy is coming from, but I think he's downplaying the negatives too much. I tell my kids (both of whom have ADHD, one mixed with OCD) that their challenge is also their superpower. Multi-tasking, trying new things, boundless energy, hyper-focus... there are aspects of ADHD that are definitely advantages in some situations. But much of our society (work/school/etc.) is centered around situations where those things are liabilities. That's why it's recognized as a disorder.

I'm not saying this guy is 100% accurate, I promise. But I think he has some very valid points (such as what Fara references here with the endless ability to try new things, the power to dive into something with an especial focus, etc) and I feel that his optimism can actually be really beneficial for someone struggling.

I know I'd be better in the workspace with meds. But I also never framed my ADD in the light of how I can flow from thing to thing so fluidly and how it's opened me to that willingness to always try new things. I'm adaptable and that's a good thing!

My main takeaway from his talk is the need for education and understanding and he was on point there. That he got rejected from a school for being ADD is something that should never happen: it's awesome he got put in one that understands and supports kids like he was (as opposed to, in the talk, when he references his roommate who struggled in a school that wasn't supportive).

I'm so torn about A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood:
on the one hand, I know Tom Hanks will be amazing
on the other hand, Mr Rogers is a figure so cemented in my memory that seeing someone else 'be' him touches on uncanny valley.

I fell yesterday. In a terribly embarrassing way. My toe caught on the curb as I was getting on the bus and down I went.

I had to talk the bus driver out of calling 911 all while people kept whining about the delay....at a stop the bus is usually stopped at for 5+ minutes.

Then once I was able to sit down properly, this old guy begins lecturing me on how it happened because I was 'messing with my phone'.....and even when I showed him the bus pass still up on my phone (aka I wasn't texting or anything), he just went back to yadda yadda if people were more present.

Fucker my foot caught on the curb edge. Also, not even a 'hope you're okay'?

Annoyance aside, the big problem is that by the end of yesterday and into today my knees (and the one I didn't scrape is worse) are giving me fits so bad. I'm hoping it's just bruising and I don't find myself needing to go to the doctor.

    • RE: RL things I love

Libraries are awesome and the Austin library is no different.

They've been putting on these Stranger Things escape rooms. There was a cancelation for one today (I'd been too late in the initial sign up and they were sold out), so I hiked it to South Austin to go (I usually don't go to the south side) and man I'm glad I did.

It was a lot of fun. The other players were great. If you felt like you were hitting a wall on a puzzle, handing it off to someone else tended to work (at one point I handed off one that made no sense to me and went back to a book that'd been abandoned by everyone and found things that'd been missed, solving the puzzle).

They apparently have a Cthulhu themed one they'll be doing so I signed up for email alerts once it goes.

Def a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

      Eat a banana!

      Trust me, I do.
Over a decade now, I eat bananas 3-5 days a week on average.

I still get fucking terrible leg cramps. I think the banana thing is an annoying af myth.

ETA: and I damn near put 'inb4 someone tells me to eat a fucking banana like always' in the original post.

    • Food!

I know we have a recipes thread, but what about general 'food?'

Anyway, I wanted to share this chocolate brand:
      https://www.raakachocolate.com/collections/all-raaka-chocolate

It's the first time I've eaten a piece of chocolate and actually tasted the 'flavor notes' mentioned. It was amazing.

As an added bonus: all of their chocolate is kosher, gluten-free, soy-free, and they have vegan options as well.

But mostly it's just fucking delicious and my new favorite brand.

@Ghost You know, I'd be cool with two of these. Colossus' skin and Magik's sword? OK, make her a sister of the two and she inherited the sword from Magik.

      Hell, I'd also take 3:
Daughter of Colossus and Shadowcat, inherited auntie Magik's blade.

But the last two (force field & telepathy) bring it into the realm of 'how many people are gonna scramble to play her on comic games just to have that power set'

It's not an "ice bucket challenge" while driving to raise bottled water for homeless people.

It's an "Ice Bucket Challenge" AAAAAAND a water balloon fight.

I was expecting the water balloon fight more than the ice bucket tbh.

I ran out recently because any time I make ramen I just dump sriracha and oyster sauce in that bitch.

    • Lifehacks

NO I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE FOR CLICKBAITY TITLE.

Ahem. So, I was mulling this over today and it's sort of a spin-off of the ADHD thread.

When you have ADD/ADHD (and OCD), doing things in a timely fashion is hard. You may engage in a task that should take just five minutes, feel like it took five minutes, but look at the clock and find that 25 minutes have passed. This happens to me frequently, especially in the mornings. (And before anyone asks: I don't touch my computer before work, so it's not online distractions.)

I'm sure others are in a similar boat, so what I want to know is: what have you found that helps? Maybe sharing our tips (aka lifehacks -- lol -- will help).

That above is my first one: I stopped spending time on the computer before work. I used to do it too much. Then it was 'only if I have a few minutes before I need to leave.' No. Nope. Those 3 minutes turn into 10 and suddenly I'm late. (Or not so suddenly as the case may be.)

Other things I've taken to doing:

      • Showering before bed
      • Getting into a habit of hanging my keys next to the door
      • Keeping my shoes in one. goddamn. location

I'm trying (and failing) to make lunches the night before, but I'm just not there yet.

The big thing I began doing is every Sunday, I make sure I have 7 (5 workdays + 2 for added options) outfits prepared for the week. Then, my dithering over 'what to wear' is cut down day-to-day. If, on a workday, I find myself torn over which one to pick... I have Alexa do it for me ("Alexa, pick a number between..."). Sometimes I do stick with her pick because I was truly indecisive. Other times as she's saying the result, I realize which one I actually wanted all along.

This one is big for me because even with this, it can still take me 20 minutes to get dressed (literally just putting clothes on, putting my hair in a ponytail or brushing it, and putting on jewelry) and I have no idea why. I can't tell you where all that time goes. But I know it'd be worse without the small things I am doing.

      So what helps you?

I love it, I love it so much (ps it can be made vegan for anyone looking for such!).

It is so good that I a) spend a few days happy I live alone / am single, b) I'm usually sad when it's all gone.

Bonus is that it's super easy to make. Just need to chop veggies.
