@hedgehog I'm sorry to hear it.

Sometimes, yeah, it can be that sort of thing where life is just too much and it's too hard... but also, as we've discussed here on the board? You aren't responsible for someone else's shitty behavior.

Like, distancing, isolating, etc: these are all typical of depression. But people who...... abuse their trauma, as it were? That's not excusable. The suffering is, yes. Harming others isn't. You did what you had to do for your mental health. Don't ever regret that.

I'm a touch under the weather today (sinus infection) and needed something light-hearted to watch (been watching a lot of horror and mystery stuff lately). I chose Enola Holmes and I'm really glad I did.

It was fun, it was cute, and man, Millie Bobbie Brown is already an amazing actress. I really look forward to seeing more of her.

My grandfather had a stroke yesterday. He's in the hospital. Supposedly he's doing OK. But I know his health has been really poor of late in general.

      He is 90.
      These things happen.
But I still hate how circumstances have meant I've only seen him once in the past five years.

It's way more good than it is bad, and I think that it exploding like that is part of the development process (so to speak). I am quite sure they learned an incredible amount, and I love that the little caption at the bottom was all "S9 Next!"

This was the caption I liked:
      0c157e00-7d17-4e1b-b327-1aa6d8b768d8-image.png

It's engineering. Failures still mean data which still means progress.

They managed that flip from vertical to horizontal to vertical. Which has never been done before. That, in and of itself, makes it a success in my eyes.

@faraday I thought there was just something /wrong/ with me.

I may be crying. I mean, I have enough power to make sure all the needs are met before wants, but..

      I am 100% the same.

One of my courses in college discussed how it's important for creatives if/when they make it big to get an entertainment lawyer and an accountant both because we are traditionally bad with money.

And finding out it was like....a common thing with people like me made me feel a lot better.

I'll be real with you: when I called my bank yesterday and asked if they could..forgive some overdraft charges (I forgot my car payment was set to go through and it caused a cascade) and the lady was like 'of course. This is just a tough time. You've been responsible with your account.'

I've never heard those words before. It made me feel really good.
So I get it I really really do

Thank you all for the response. This thread has really helped me realize that alot of the baggage I carried through the years was undeserved and unearned.

      100%.
      Also: you aren't alone.

I know it doesn't help solve it, but it helps to know (at least for me) 'hey I'm not some weirdo freak that's irreversibly broken: this is a Thing brains can do and unfortunately mine does, but there is a community out there'

      @wretched

So many of these get me.
The 'Doesn't look in the eyes' especially. I've been told straight up the reason I didn't get a job was because I couldn't look the interviewer in the eyes.

I don't know how people can. You can't look at two eyes at once. And if you focus on their nose that's not their eyes. So which eye do you look at? Why is focusing on them, in general, not enough?!

My third-grade kiddo's principal just called and said he drew a bunch of naked women in his math book.

I am completely at a loss. He is really into art, draws all sorts of things, but I have been really careful as to what he's exposed to in terms of age-appropriate content in shows and movies and I have no idea where this would come from. (Just curiosity, I guess?)

I also have no idea where to go for guidance on this stuff...I know my super conservative fam would go the shame route and I really, really don't like that and won't do it.

Just sucks feeling like I am fumbling around in the dark on this one...this is a subject that seems very easy to fuck up.

      One option:
Museum (I know covid, but many many museums have virtual visits and collections digitally) trip showing classical art. There's nudity in equal measures presented tastefully. Make it educational, make it 'hey I'm embracing your hobby, but there's a right way and a wrong way so we're going to discuss and learn which is which'

    • RE: Do you believe in paranormal things?

I'm like many of the others. I believe there are things we don't yet have the capacity to explain. Things that could be very real that are written off as something supernatural just because we don't have the reason for it yet... or the ability to comprehend it (woo string theory).

I was actually part of a ghost hunting group about a decade ago. Most of the time it was just sort of a fun activity for me that involved exploring old, creepy places, with a group of people who got us permission to be there. Sah-weet!

But we actually had one case where a professor of a university called us in to help a family. Shit happened that night that I cannot explain. Shit that makes me uncomfortable to this day. Does it mean I'm fully on the "oh yeah the paranormal is totes real" train? No. But it does mean I definitely think there are things we don't yet have the capacity to understand, but we also cannot deny. So for the time being, yes, some might call it supernatural.

Like, OK. I mean, it's not a supernatural thing... But people didn't know whether or not a horse's hooves fully (all 4) left the ground during a gallop until we had photography (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eadweard_Muybridge). The human eye couldn't track it, so it was apparently a big point of debate at the time. Then a photographer comes along, manages to get some photos, and proves: yes, during a gallop, there are stages where all four hooves are off the ground.

So what we call supernatural may just be something we don't have the capacity to explain with science. Which, again, puts me with the others above in their reference to the caveat. I don't blindly believe in the supernatural, but I think there are things we place under that umbrella until we can explain them properly.

      @Sunny said in Pokemon Go:

I am really sick of the Very Loud Complaints of people who aren't playing. There's a couple of people I know on Facebook that any time anybody posts anything at all they have to get all up in it about how awful/whatever the people are who are playing. I swear to god it's like people seriously hate fun.

I get it. You don't like it. That doesn't give you any call to piss all over my fun, particularly since it's not like I'm spamming or anything.

I'm not at all surprised by the people I've seen doing this. By and large they've (the ones I've personally seen) been the same people who will post 30 Dr Who (or GoT or Walking Dead or whatever their personal obsession is) related things in one day, but then throw a huge temper tantrum about 'all the stupid football posts' during the entirety of the NFL season.

The only stores I've ever forgiven for having Christmas stuff out before November are craft stores.

Because as a person who likes to make handmade stuff, esp. decor... You gotta start early because unless you have no job nor kids to take care of, that shit takes forever.

I utilize Yelp when I'm unfamiliar with the restaurants in an area. However, I also go through the reviews.

Because 9 times out of 10, that 1 star review is some sort of bullshit like, 'I forgot my phone and when I went back there they didn't have it waiting for me!' or 'I requested they make my meal gluten free and they said they couldn't!'

I provide T2 support for an online TCG. Sometimes, in the course of support, we need people to send us screenshots.

For the first time, I have spotted a MU*er.

Yes, you there, I see Potato, with a window to MCM open, behind the game screen.

I used to (for work) moderate a forum populated mostly by (and geared towards) kids in the 9-15 range. This meant certain things were off-limits, per the lawyers. Understandably so. We didn't need the lawsuit from 14-year-old Suzie roleplaying (roleplay was a big deal on these boards) sexual things with Billy who turns out to be a 35-year-old man (never mind personal morals I have there).

I did moderation and handled a lot of the emails to the moderators. The amount of times I had to explain that 'freedom of speech' doesn't apply to a privately owned site with a very specific ToS... I had a macro for it by the end.
