Goddamnit dude, fuck me for opening that at work.

Kinda funny how I never used to have like a strong external emotional response to articles like that, but now that my kid lives with me I can't even make it through the headline without spraying around like broken faucet.

I saw that story the other day when my PMS-sensitivity was at its worst. I was weepy for at least an hour.

      @Misadventure - clearly I need more chocolate. 😉

    • RE: Mental Health and Grown Up Stuff

So I don't go out much.

For a variety of reasons (busy with work/school, physical health, lack of things to do...). But I do, every couple weeks, go to dinner with a group of ladies who also happen to be knitters, like me. I was introduced to them by a long time (17~ years) MU* friend.

My anxiety and self-image issues being what they are, I've had myself convinced they only accept / put up with me because of her.

Today, we had dinner planned. Said friend had to bail because she was sick. Normally... I'd bail, in turn (as she's generally my ride). Today, I made myself go. Paid for the Uber to get there, even.

...and had a great time. I didn't have a single flare of anxiety, either. It was just a nice dinner (that satisfied a craving; I've wanted tacos for daaaaays) and one of them even gave me a ride home.

I call this a #win because of the lack of anxiety. I was expecting it to happen, even braced myself for it, but it never came.

I honestly think with the depression handled by drugs that finally (fiiiiiinally) work for me, I'm able to better manage my anxiety (without having the two compound each other).

No one's mentioned it yet... so

Welcome to Nightvale - it's been going on for a while, you'd probably want to check the archives, but it's fun. I feel like it has a touch of Twin Peaks and WoD silliness to it.

The Moth - People share stories from their lives. Some of them are funny and some of them are rather deep and impactful (https://themoth.org/stories/war is one of my favorites).

The Dollop - I was relatively recently introduced to this one. It's basically two guys going over weird/silly history.

Stuff You Missed in History - Similar to above.

      Moving.

That's all just moving. The whole packing stuff up, sorting stuff out. The whole process.

I am probably moving across the country again when my lease here is up (I've got a direction I want my career to go in and I gotta be in a specific place for it). I've decided, each month, starting in April, I am going to downgrade a 'category' of things.

April is clothes. Like not just the 'oh this doesn't fit' or 'this is holey' but 'I have to admit to myself that I will probably never wear this again'

I'm hoping it makes the actual move easier.

    • RE: RL things I love

I recently watched through the episodes of British Baking Challenge on Netflix. One challenge was a Madeira cake.

Shortly after watching said episode, I decided I wanted to make an orange one. With an orange rum glaze.

Today, for the first time, I modified recipes / used them as inspiration instead of just following a recipe to the letter...

...and omg it came out amazing.

I hate when people go 'Oh just get a...'

      'I can't afford that.'
      'Just set some money aside!'
'I really can't do that right now.'
'Well if you really cared about...'
'Look, I am really not in a financial place where I can do that sort of thing.'
'Oh my god how dare you imply that I don't understand what it's like to be poor...'

You're the goddamn shit who implied I'm incapable of 'just setting money aside' or that I 'don't care' so don't fucking turn this into some pity party on yourself.

If only so I don't have to see you quoting him after I put him on ignore. 😉

Also, surr, I love you, but for fuck's sake just stop. Please. Take a day off the forums. Have some tea. Work on your knitting. I haven't even been reading anything any of you have been saying anymore, but just seeing these huge blocks of posts are making me reach for the whiskey.

But you aren't apologizing, from the looks of it. Like I said, haven't read everything because it's MASSIVE BLOCKS OF UNENDING TEXT and I am in a migraine cycle, but that sort of right there says it's not an apology. An apology is succinct.

An apology is not 'I'm sorry but here's ten million reasons why you're wrong' or 'I'm sorry but'
      It's 'I apologize'

Didn't we have a whole thread on this shit?

If they don't know you they don't know you. No amount of beating at the fucking wall is going to ever change that.

      Just walk the fuck away.

    • Introducing... <Spoilers>!

We have something new! It's a spoiler tag!
I see this getting the most use in threads like 'Good TV,' but it may come in handy elsewhere.

      click to show

The spoiler is it either does or doesn't work because it's a brand new plugin and nodebb likes to explode.

You'll see a little eyeball symbol up in the editing options. That's your shortcut to awesome.

      ETA:
Ok, so the 'title' part of it doesn't work quite right, but! The rest seems to.

    • RE: POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check

My biggest thing, re: statted systems vs. consent games (because consent games are not systems, so the term does not apply) is where the power lies.

On the latter, the power lies in the hands of Staff and whoever has the loudest voice. Your meek players and those who are not comfortable approaching authority are at a loss. How many people have just quietly left games because they don't feel comfortable approaching Staff?

I mean, shit, I am the person other people come to on games because I'm that person who will just bullshit with Staff on channels and even I have just left games rather than deal with some shit because I've encountered Staff I can't find that level of rapport with. I know people who can never, ever find that level of comfort. Faraday, for example, is one of the most approachable Staffers you will ever meet and I have had to shove people at her and tell them it is totally okay to talk to her and that is on mundane, happy issues and not 'hey this person is being a problem.'

In statted systems, you put power in the hands of your players. You give even your meek, anxious, introverted players something they can hold onto. You give people a voice. You give them something concrete they can hold onto, they can point to, they can back themselves up with. You give your Staff a base to work off of in arguments rather than he-said-she-said and hoping a smart third party or a decent log is available.

I love consent for storytelling and I still engage in a lot of it, even in statted systems, but even then only for people I trust.

@Selerik said in The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves):

@Auspice That is heavy. I'm so sorry you went through that.

It's just a snapshot of shit my dad has done.

I've gone through... a lot of emotions with him. For a brief time, in my late 20s, I went through a 'Well, they were young. They had a couple kids before they were even 30 and I'd probably fuck up with kids that young.' But now in my 30s, I'm like: fuck's sake, I'd at least have compassion and do my best even if I made dumb mistakes sometimes. And he's still just a total dick about so many other things (like his treatment of my mom as referenced).

It's just an addition to the pile of why I don't interact with my family much. Of my four siblings, two of my brothers are pretty cool. I keep waiting for them to move out (both are in their early 20s) so I can maybe try to have more than a 'we text sometimes' relationship with them. Someday.

    • RE: FS3

I don't think FS3 'ruins RP' at all. I think the only reason people ever notice is that in more majorly sheeted games, so many people min-max their sheets and then never actually RP to their sheet at all.

So other games, due to min-maxing, have a total disconnect between sheet and PC. The sheet only 'exists' when dice rolling comes out. On FS3, the sheet 'exists' more consistently. I suppose that's where it may seem like perhaps (to some) it ruins RP.

To me, however, it more specializes PCs. Instead of everyone becoming 'the same' in the end, you end up with people who are more representative of their parts. A huge tough guy with points dumped in brawn, but fewer in reflexes is going to show that. He might get hit more often, but he'll weather it better and do greater damage when he hits.

And like Fara has said, it only really comes down to rolling a couple more dice. You'll still see someone with 8 dice roll "Good" while someone with 5 dice rolls a "Great." So it's not like the people with less on their sheets are always doing worse while those with more are always doing better.

My pilot, who has lower stats (due to being a LTJG as compared to a whole bunch of Captains with Great/Expert scores) had a good weekend this past. She actually did better than almost every other pilot in the combat. However, it was her first good combat in... quite a while! It can happen!
