    • RE: Pretendy Fun Time Games

Funny enough, I just sidebar'd a bit in another thread about how much I hate how often 'my fun' is used these days. And 9 times out of 10 (in my own personal experience), it's used to excuse really shitty behavior. Sure, it's your fun, but this is a shared environment, yo. You don't go to a fancy restaurant and begin shouting your entire conversation (at least I hope not) because hey, other people.

The biggest reminder I always have, on a personal scale, of a 'my fun' person was someone who would mentally calculate out her char's future path... including how other characters are involved. Except she'd never tell those people. So when Bob would end up dating Suzie, she'd flip out at both Bob and Suzie OOCly because 'THAT'S NOT WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN' and go off and tell everyone else how Bob and Suzie ruined her fun because Bob was supposed to date HER... except she never told him any of this and just made assumptions.

My fun is all well and good... until it's negatively affecting other people. At which point: just write some damn fanfic. 😉

Just read that in early August there is going to be a LARP at a campground called "Survive Jason". Basically, one player is Jason and everyone else sees if they can survive the night.

      A few things:

      1. I would absolutely do this
      2. This is absolutely a Knights of Badassdom scenario where people could probably get actually killed and people will think it's fake for 2-3 hours.

Afterthought: You know, people being awkward as they are, I wonder if a couple ACTUALLY HAVING SEX would do the opposite of the movie scenario. In the movies, you fuck you DAI.

In real life, the guy playing Jason might go "Uhhhhhhhh okay this is awkward and weird and I don't know if it would be creepy to go in there while theyre doing that sooooooooo..."

      I would 100% do this.
Because I'm the brunette and they have a higher chance of survival.

....because no one ever wants to fuck them.

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

It is a but cumbersome, but I think that's largely because Evennia is not a codebase a lot of us are used to.

I did have to turn off the Public channel. It was way too spammy. The Grayson channel has been awesomely inviting and welcoming. I've used replying to Classifieds to get to know some other folks.

To me, the 'get involved' curve is no higher than any other large game. And the commands are just learning a new codebase. What helps with that is that, in my experience, the players have been SUPER helpful, as have the staff. I forget commands all the time and if I fail to remember what they were in the help files, I can usually ask and get a helpful (non-snarky/mean) reply quickly.

It would be nice of the helpfiles were on the website and searchable. And I'm sure this is something that's being considered (since, AFAIK, it'd be easy to implement).

    • RE: Leadership, Spotlight, and PCs of Staffers

This goes back to what I'd said in the other thread. A Staffer shouldn't run vital plot/metaplot through their charbit (because even if the character isn't in the center / lead, many players will act like they are to 'play it safe').

Run your own char-centric plots. Hell, it could actually be GOOD to do so, since it can inspire people to do it for themselves. Just don't also tie that char-centric personal plot (PRP) into metaplot.

      Good Example:
Bob (StaffAlt) decides to run a PRP in which Bob gets injured and has to seek out medical aid from the opposing camp. He seeks out PCs to do this, thereby involving them. It's a plot for Bob's development, but it encourages involvement from other PCs and has no meta-plot gain for Bob.

      Bad Example:
Bob (StaffAlt) runs a plot line in which Bob is injured behind enemy lines. The NPC Leader of the enemy camp (also run by Bob) swoops in and declares Bob Worthy Of Them and declares that all PCs in said enemy camp must aid and support Bob.

It's an extreme of a Bad Example, but it's a case in which it would be very clear to the players that the Staffer is abusing their power for their own character's gain. Sure, it may push some other plotline forward, but a plotline should never require a Staff PC to be pushed forward.

If you wanted completed documentation on a very complex tool by the first week of September maybe you should have hired someone before July.

I'm good at absorbing tools and turning around to provide training, but when I'm learning an all new (to me) industry and the tool (without even knowing the business processes yet!)... two months to a deliverable is asking a bit much.

      @GirlCalledBlu

Honestly, it's part of why I think keeping a tiny staffing team (esp. if the two of you are in the same house) isn't always the best plan.

Things go missed. If something happens IRL, it's likely going to affect both of you. And it's harder to keep up with running plot, keeping up to date on jobs, and trying to do things for those players that have contributed.

I use it at work. All the time. For everything.

Attorney's call me "where did you put the thing?"

"Have you looked in the notebook?"

"Do you use that a lot?"

"I use it for everything. Literally everything I work on is in there. You can find it at any time."

      ...oh.

I have two separate notebooks I use at work. And both are always open.

      Important emails I get sent?
      Into the notebook.

PDFs, Spreadsheets, Presentations I may need to reference later?
      Into the notebook.

      Meeting notes?
      Into the notebook.
      Meeting planning?
      INTO THE DAMN NOTEBOOK.

I have entire pages that are just like, stream of consciousness 'boards' where I throw in ideas, snippets, images that I want to call back to. Even my rough draft is taking shape there.

Any time someone tries to tell me Evernote is 'just as good,' I jab a finger at embedded spreadsheets.

      @Arkandel

I don't think the STs could do much unless they're willing to call people out on the min-maxing and insisting on being able to twist things into their favor... and deal with the fallout that comes of doing so.

On FC, I dealt with so much of it. 'You cannot do what you want with those skills/powers.' 'BUT IF I DO THIS AND THAT THEN I CAN ROLL MY MASSIVE DICE POOL RIGHT?' 'No, you can't.' Player proceeds to run to another Staffer to beg them to try to get them to declare it OK.

Or the person who tries to take over the entire scene and do ALL THE THINGS and call ALL THE SHOTS and if anyone else gets even an iota of attention or Thing to Do (even if they have 9 of 10 things), they start complaining OOC about being bored / left out. (Saw this one often, tho primarily from the same person, on BitN).

I'll be honest... About 80% of why I'm on Reno is so I can run plots for people I know. So I can do my ST-ing without having to go through the headache of the types of people listed above (or worse: do all the legwork on a plot only to have someone bully me out of it so they can have it to themselves / their friends). I've all but given up on ever being able to enjoy myself in an 'open' PRP/plot scene on an nWoD game.

I like this idea. Esp. the being able to hit '+wantrp' on its own to see the list of those who have requested RP with you.

As someone whose RL tends to be busy / explode without warning, it's not uncommon for me to have a backlog of people to get with. I also have an utterly shitty memory. If people needing/wanting RP with me could file something like that, I'd have a handy list to keep an eye on.

      My lifehacks:

      1. Plan nothing. React to all things spontaneously and in a spirit of panic.
      2. Save time on meals by simply not eating them! The hunger pangs and migraines as your body seeks to consume itself will help to keep that killer instinct sharp.
      3. Do nothing to address your rising sense of anxious dread until you have a panic attack at work and have to bail unexpectedly. This will help you to feel more comfortable and relaxed about returning to duty the next day.
      4. Avoid conflict and confrontations by always deferring and shoving your emotions down; I'm sure that will work out great (see #3)
      5. Always take on more than one person can reasonably manage. Ideally, shape these commitments such that other people can't do their work until you do yours, as this will help you maintain a constant sense of urgency. Carrying around the feeling that you're always failing someone somewhere is good for building a humble character.

This advice I give to you all for free. Enjoy.

    • RE: Roleplaying writing styles

I saw MOO 'socials' referenced a bit earlier. The verbs used (like 'hug <name>' or similar). In my experience (my first few years in the hobby were primarily MOO), those were always used in an OOC context.

So if a good friend logged in, I might type 'hug <name>' rather than 'p <name> :hugs!'

I, personally, never saw a game that used them as IC things because only the two people involved saw them and they weren't isolated to being in the same room (like Arkandel's MUD example).

I do use metaposing to supplement body language. Something like 'her shoulders round and tighten, in an almost defensive gesture.' Because similar body language can have different meanings... but while you'd be able to tell the difference IRL, explaining it in text is harder. So it's easier to give the context that someone would read 'in person.' I do also crack jokes (often at my character's expense) in poses.

My scene sets can be long. I know there was a joke at one time, 'Page long set? Must be an Auspice set.' 90% of the time it'd be in situations where an RP Room was being used and thus there was no desc, or the room we were in represented a very large area (such as 'The Park' but the scene itself was being done around a specific fountain). And no, it's not one page sans line breaks. I use line breaks, don't worry. 😉

After the set, though, most of my poses tend towards the 5-8 line sweet spot... But it does depend on others in the scene. Mind, that usually only angles me to shorter poses. I generally can't be arsed to keep up with massiveposes for long at all.

...unless it was a gdoc with @Ghost. I don't know what it is about our RP, but we would have some long, descriptive poses. It was fun, but no one draws it out of me like he does. That bastard.

Fuck people who do this for making pedestrians risk oncoming traffic just to cross the street.

Especially fuck the guy who did it at the intersection near the school for the blind. They have the line to stop at almost two car lengths back from the cross walk for safety reasons. This asshole pulled up and over the crosswalk itself.

      B) Carl approaches Rick, sidling around to stand between the other man and the nearest exit. Crossing his arms, he asks, "Where were you on the night Christy was murdered?"

I'd want to play with the Carl in B way more than the Carl in A.

While I somewhat agree on your point on pose style, in a scene I would have huge issues with pose B. The reason for this is the assumed success that impacts what my character can do, by getting between Rick and the exit. To me this is power posing, granted not a horrible example of it but still unless you are dropping dice on the athletics roll pose the attempt let the other PC pose weather it succeeds or not.

This is why, when I'm doing such in a scene, I'd write it as:

"Carl approaches Rick, sidling around in an attempt to stand between the other man and the nearest exit."

That way there's the opportunity for the other player to decide if successful or not and to what degree. But it clearly depicts the what/where.

All I care about, is that someone gives me something to roleplay with.

Pose length doesn't matter, so long as the person is engaged in the scene and furthering RP.

Give me something to play off of and I am good. In the right situation someone shaking their head, or making a noncommital(sic) sound can still further RP.

      But...

People can write huge poses that add nothing. They can write small poses that add nothing.

Both of these are equally frustrating.

Those people are what I have referred to in other threads as 'furniture.' They are set dressing. They are there for their entertainment and no one else's.

RPing with them is upsetting because it is emotionally draining to carry an entire scene on your own. I know people who I really do like OOC, but I cannot be in a 1-on-1 scene with them because it will just wear me out to be the only one actively contributing.

One of my coworkers keeps kosher.
We sit near the 'specialty' team (think curated items: alcohol, cheeses, high-end chocolates...) and they often put out various snacks for the area.

They usually try to have at least one kosher item out for him. And I've often seen 'deliveries' left on his desk of drinks, snacks, etc. that are kosher.

I know there's people who dislike Whole Foods (and trust me, the opinion of Amazon here is p low; long-time employees aren't happy about the new ownership), but the camaraderie in this place is stellar. I'm sad I'm just a short-term contractor.

Just for the joy of those 'holy shit what is that' moments, I'd likely start such a game a few weeks before 'landfall,' just so folks can get into their chars and then have those first experiences scenes.
