    • RE: RL things I love

This sort of crosses into the 'Weird RL' but it was kind of charming.

I have always sort of 'adopted' cats unwittingly. Nearly everywhere I've lived, I've had the area strays realize I am the Local Friendly Cat Lady and just sort of wander on by from time to time. In NKY, my house faced the building next to mine rather than the alley directly, so my yard (slab) was fenced and a safe spot to hang out and get away from dogs, kids, etc. I ended up ultimately, there, setting up a sheet of metal as a shelter from rain and snow and would put out food for the strays.

The best was the time a momma cat brought her babies to introduce them to me. ❤

      ANYHOW.

Last night, as I'm dozing off, I hear this loud MEOW from the direction of my living room. I start awake (because neither of my cats meow unless something's wrong), but both my kitties are by my legs and both are staring that way, too. Confused, I get up and head for the living room with them following.

I look out onto the patio and there's this round faced tabby, pawing at a trash bag I'd put out earlier. You see, when I clean, I'm usually wiped by the end of it (thanks, fibro), so I'll set the bag on the patio and take it out the following morning once I've rested. Every so often, I've found little holes torn through it. Well, that bag had no food trash in it and this little tabby was apparently quite cross with me for that. I guess he had decided I'd been putting food out for him.

As soon as he saw me at the door, he looked up and began up his complaints: meow meow meow meow!

      Oh, well then!

I keep two bowls of food for my cats in separate rooms and they sometimes have fits of ignoring the smaller one and eventually, it gets stale and I have to throw it out (the thing that may have begun this whole situation!). They'd been doing just that this week. So I went, grabbed the bowl, and set it outside the door. Mr. Roundface promptly went up and began chowing down while my kitties watched from inside.

When he was done, he looked up, walked around the patio slab, meow meow meow! and wandered off.

I guess I'm just glad the food is being eaten rather than going to waste because my two are picky af.

I've also played around with Storium RP. The pace is slow - sometimes maddeningly slow - and the quality is very hit-or-miss depending on the players. But it's much more friendly to wacky schedules and limited time.

I tried RoleGate recently because YAY D&D I CAN FINALLY TRY 5th EDITION... it lasted a bit longer than any Storium game I've tried, but it still died off.

The second game I tried, I got my character made aaaaaand that was it.

I haven't tried any others yet.

In theory I have more 'free time' than other people (due to the lack of an SO or kids), but my schedule itself is so weird and my job so often changes it up that I find it next to impossible to really ever commit to anything or schedule scenes. I see +events a lot and I'm usually like 'Welp. I'll go......if I can.' I fear even signing up since I usually don't know until day of (or even 'hour of') if I can since almost everything happens during work hours and sometimes I can slow!RP, sometimes I can't.

Arise, freshly dead chicken. So... I really, really need to find someone who wants to move to Austin or already lives here but I don't know how. Do people use Craigslist? Is there some other way to find a roommate? My current financial/living situation requires that I find someone as soon as possible so if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

      Craigslist.
I THINK you can post rooms-for-rent on Zillow (most of the time when I move, I use zillow nowadays).

Honestly, I just want something that isn’t a piece of shit.

My laptop is literally falling apart.

But she’s a good machine. She’s reliable as hell, and I’ve never had much of an issue with her. She needs a new battery too.

      I’m gonna miss her.

But I’m looking forward to a keyboard that isn’t missing keys, and the ability to play Battletech.

I went a few weeks without a T key (I kept a Sublime -- notepad ess. -- window with lower and uppercase to copypaste) on my old Macbook before I got a bluetooth keyboard and my D key would go out every so often. I totally get it.

For $500, it's not bad! I dunno how Lenovo's are OVERALL because I've not used one / heard much about 'em recently, but I'd take one over a Dell probs. But the SSD is def def better than an HDD. That's the big sticker right there IMO.

@ninjakitten This is pretty much me, exactly. I threw things into my buffer with ctrl-b and got them back with ctrl-up (or ctrl-p depending on your settings).

I'm liking BeipMU pretty well, though. I've clicked links from it SEVERAL TIMES. I might finally switch.

That was one thing I LOVED back when I first used it. I was like 'homg links finally properly work?!'
I mean, I loved SimpleMU. Really.
      But dat https issue tho.

You did good getting the SSD over the HDD. The processor is a little ehhh. Not too bad, mind. Most laptops are around that range, but it is a leetle low, but not terribly for the $500 price point. Like overall you're right around what you'd be getting in most machines for the price I think.

    • RE: Good TV

I love that it was Jason who said the right thing.

The only real problem w/The Good Place is that either:

      a) It will have to end at some point, which, boo: no more Good Place
      or
      b) It'll fall into that trap of just meandering on and on into garbage city like other shows that get whipped onward by their network even though they had reached their natural conclusion.

I'd prefer A because I am always satisfied by a natural ending even though there's that sort of ennui from something I loved ending. B is just like seeing some old, rotting playground that the city refuses to put money into, but expects to still do its job. You can tell there were memories there once and you hear the squeak and rattle of the swings in the wind, but you know it will never, ever be quite the same. And some parents expect their kids to enjoy it the same as they once did, while getting frustrated that they don't, gesticulating wildly to some off-kilter slide: "But you used to love that thing!"

Finally got around to seeing Atomic Blonde. It was awesome. What really blew me away was the lighting, I want neon everywhere now.

It took me a hot minute to watch it too, but when I finally did (a few months ago), I was kinda mad at myself for taking so long.

I want more like it now!

@auspice So this looks... not terrible. I might like it.

But every time I drag my input window to a different size, it snaps back down to one line's height. Is that how it works, or is something wrong?

Ah HA, I have found the setting that makes it stop doing this.

This shows a lot of promise. I'll have to play with the 'puppet' windows later, which I think are maybe more what I'm used to spawns being.

      @Altair

Most importantly to me, it is actively maintained and the dev responds to tickets quite quickly.

This is why I decided to give it a try. I looked at their git and saw recent updates and a link to a discord. Yes, please.

I'm glad you figured it out! I haven't used Beip in over a decade (esp. in recent years since I MU via Mac now; my PC is purely gaming purposes), so I wouldn't be much help. 😉 I'm glad @Altair knows what's up! 🙂

Late to the party, but man do I miss Astrid on F&L.

I loved my Missing Limb Count. That was fun times. (Though I'm sure @Livia didn't like putting me back together all the time.)

@altair That's new. I've never heard of it before. I'll need to give it a try, thanks!

I used BeipMU heavily as a teenager. 😄 It fit on a floppy disk (with room for logs!), so I could take it EVERYWHERE.

At school? MU. Family dragged me somewhere random but I could get on a computer? MU.

Then I upgraded to putting it on thumbdrives.....

BeipMU is p. great and if you're used to SimpleMU, it's a fairly easy transition.

@roz said in What's your favorite MU* client?:

@auspice Are you using Atlantis's sidebar format or tab format? All of my Atlantis spawns are nested AF

Tab format. I couldn't get used to the sidebar. It took away from screen real estate. Since I'm on a Macbook (15"), I don't have a very big screen to begin with and I don't full-size windows so I can have things side-by-side (like Sublime alongside MU* windows for note-taking, etc).

If there is a way to nest spawns in tab format, I have never been able to find it and I have tried.

      I miss nested spawns.

POTATO Y U BREAK IN OSX?!?!

Potato works fine with macOS, the problem is the system TCL/TK that comes with the OS. Use macPorts or a similar package manager to install up-to-date versions of TCL and TK. Download the Potato source (not the macOS binary, which is linked against the problematic system libs), unzip it, then launch the app via the main.tcl script.

I'll try that. I tried the suggestions on the Potato github and they did not work. It just continued to error all over the place.
