      I've been thinking about Gloomhaven.

Is it as good as the reviews claim? Is it worth the price tag?

      Double-post!

Gloomhaven is pretty. That's... all I know. The last game night I made it to for the lady geeks group, one gal brought a stack of games that she hasn't gotten to play yet and that was in the mix. She, apparently, buys games and then begs other people to teach her to play them.

I'm generally pretty good at grokking games, but I just sort of sat there and stared at Gloomhaven with a sense of feeling so overwhelmed. We ended up playing uhm- blast. I forget the name, but it was a very cute resource building game with a tree and everyone is forest animals.

I really feel Gloomhaven falls into the category of 'you need someone else to teach you' or maybe just watch a lot of videos? But it definitely hit my mark of feeling overwhelmed. Maybe someone who has played it can give a better review, but that was my initial sense of it. I looked it over, thought it looked gorgeous, but I began reading over the rules and just packed it up and told the other ladies let's find something else. >.>

      New to Me: Keyforge.

Random, chaotic, not all that deep but more surprising than most games.

Played against @EmmahSue with a deck that was, frankly, a complete dick.

I've been excited about Keyforge for months. I, admittedly, love card games. I stopped playing M:tG because of cost. And then Netrunner fell off. I'm interested in the Arkham Horror LCG, but I learned about it too late (work kept me away from the game store and such for a long time!) to really feel I can get into it now... even if I love that it's cooperative just like the board game!

But then I found Keyforge. And I found I loved how unique some of the mechanics were. The lack of 'mana' and using 'houses' to limit how much you play per turn is a good one and it also causes you to have to really juggle your deck and switch up strategy (and I can see how it'd cause you to have to learn and really understand your deck over time!). The unique decks is another and and-

I haven't bought a deck yet, but I've played with the demo set at the game store. I just dunno that I'd ever find anyone to play with being on the late shift at work like I am (hopefully once we get 1 or 2 new people trained up, I'll get to move to an earlier more social-life-friendly schedule. I've been pleading).

@arkandel said in What series are you reading?:

@auspice I know how to use the googles, but can you guys give an idea of what the series is about in a non-spoiler-y way? Like, the genre or general plot?

@Sparks may be better at this than me. I'm only halfway through Six of Crows and I'm having a hard time encapsulating it. I just know that so far, the world is really pulling me in steadily in a way that I am super excited to finish this book and pick up others which is, IMO, a really good sign.

But y'all, the world of this book is what has drawn me in. I like the characters, too, but it's the world that's got me. I'm gonna keep reading (go on to the next book and then circle back to the other trilogy).

While the first of the Six of Crows books does not require reading the Grisha trilogy, the second one does benefits from it, btw. Not enough so that you won't appreciate the second book without reading the trilogy first, but there's bits you'll appreciate a lot more if you've read the Grisha books.

I will probably circle back and read the trilogy before reading book 2 if only because it's hard af getting Six of Crows from the library rn. 😄

But yes, the world is great. I really love the Polish and other Eastern European roots to the setting. It's not something you see used very often and it gives some amazing flavor. Kaz and Inej are great.

Breathing life back into this thread because I was kind of surprised by this book.

Six of Crows, by Leigh Bardugo.
It was 'assigned' by the RL book club I'm in. There's actually a first trilogy for the world (the 'Grisha Trilogy') that starts with Shadow and Bone (tho you don't have to read the first trilogy to read Six of Crows).

I really didn't like the last book we read (that was my intro to the club) and a lot of their past books had been sort of... eh. They are really into a breed of YA that I am generally not.

But y'all, the world of this book is what has drawn me in. I like the characters, too, but it's the world that's got me. I'm gonna keep reading (go on to the next book and then circle back to the other trilogy).

Script ran out for two of my meds.
Can't juggle the time to go see my doc to get a new one.

Pharmacy claimed they had one of my meds in stock, but they didn't when I went to pick them up today.

      Wheeeee.

One of the meds I need to re-up is my migraine meds. I had hoped to make it in to the doc by now because it isn't working right anymore, so I was kinda-sorta-okay with it running out, but now I'm kinda in panic-mode because "sorta" working is better than nothing at all.

Guess it's time to squeeze in a virtual doc visit this week so I can get something until I can find the time for an actual office visit. 😕

Pretty decently sized blind population that plays MUs through accessibility features. Can't think of a video game where that's true.

He has a lung condition and the steam screws with him.

This might be why I think I take hotter showers than I do. My asthma was much much worse as a kid/teen so I took colder showers for the longest time. And if I take too hot a shower, I can tell because hoo-boy it gets hard to breathe!

      Also I did forget:

      • I have standard piercings in my ears, a Monroe, and a daith. I used to have my tongue pierced, but after a surgery I 'came to' from the pain meds a few days later and had an 'oh shit!' moment. I also had my nose pierced before my sinus surgery a few years ago, but it was closed up before the swelling went down. I've considered more piercings, but haven't gotten them yet.
      • I have three tattoos and am considering many more (once I can afford it). I've even found my tattoo artist!

      • I always thought I liked hot showers until I began dating. Now I discover I actually don't like them all that hot in comparison. I FEEL YOU, @Arkandel!
      • Truffles (truffle salt, truffle oil, etc.) makes me ill. Not in an allergy kind of way, but in a 'holy shit this is too much' kind of way. I'm a super-taster and it is one of the most overpowering things I've ever encountered. I don't really trust anyone that is not a professional with it as a result.
      • I love every cat. Cats > People. I get legit upset if a movie/show/etc hurts a cat. Fuck that show. If it's a person or dog or whatever, I can deal. But if it's a cat? It goes in the "never watch again, 1-star, #donotrecommend" list.
      • I have no shame about using walkthroughs for video games when I struggle. I play games to relax nowadays. I don't need bragging rights for a game. I just wanna play and have fun goddamnit.
      • I am ambidextrous.
      • I can fold a fitted sheet. #probablyawitch
      • I taught myself to knit from one of those black-and-white "how to knit" kits in yonder pre-YouTube days, so my 'style' of knitting is a blend of the two -- there's Continental (left-handed) and English (right-handed) -- methods. Over the years many people have tried to understand 'how' I knit and have been unable to puzzle it out. But it works and it comes together, so I just keep doing it because re-teaching myself has failed. But it does mean I cannot teach others.
      • I can, however, teach people to crochet and I am good enough at that I have troubleshot crochet problems over the phone!
      • I'm immune to poison ivy (or at least I was as a kid; nowadays I'm not dumb enough to test if I still am).

I have considered trying it! Good to hear that it does work well.

They've apparently already budgeted (and begun scripting) a sequel, which will focus predominantly on Miles and Gwen.

Oh man there was a girl (prob. 12-14 years old) a few seats down from me who, during a scene between Miles and Gwen, was whispering to herself "Kiss kiss kiss kiss kiss"

      I about died.

I just watched Into the Spider-Verse, and my mind is blown.

As a huge fan of Miles and Gwen in their respective comics, I really loved their portrayals in this; I'd happily go back and see the film a second time.

Just saw it and it's already fallen into my top Marvel movies. I love so much about it. The animation was stunning. The characters were fun. It had so much classic Spider-Man banter.

      @aria

Publix (at least in South Carolina) still hires teenagers as baggers and they are trained to offer to carry bags to your car. And they do just that. They prioritize the elderly and those who are injured, disabled, etc.

After surgeries I had, it made life so much easier. Publix is also pretty great because they (at least did) contribute to college funds for their teenage employees. I had a roommate who worked there through HS and loved it.
