I usually do, but I haven't decided yet.

I am working very seriously on a novel at the moment, but I'm not sure I want to do the rush work NaNo inspires.

They missed an opportunity. Could have been 'House off ...'
      And 'Grammer nerd's'

Because we all love random apostrophes in signs.

      Right?

I think Doors are a good step. There are a few issues, but they are not insurmountable.

      1. People do not understand the Doors system. You would need a good tutorial, staff & STs who understand them.
      2. You would need to make sure players are all on the same page that they have to use them. That a social roll does not mean oop! the successful persuasion roll means they win! No, it means they got through a door. You do not get to just cross your arms, stomp your feet, and say NO. But you have to give a little. You get to decide HOW you give, but you do give because they did succeed and they did make it through a Door.

I think those two things are possible. But the 2nd one means that the players on the losing end of the Clash have to be understanding.

And you know what? If you get the asshole who goes 'homg no I get everything I want!'

guess what? They just went against the rules. They lose. Too fucking bad.

The objection is to using third-party sources when discussing rules-as-written. It isn't pedantry, it's requiring decent and generally constant accuracy. There's no guarantee that when/if this thread is read a year from now by someone new the information in that wiki will still be accurate, given it's neither a published source nor one any of us control.

They aren't even rules-as-written because they weren't developed for MU*. They were aimed for table-top - there are no official rules for what we need, thus no appeal to authority can work.

I do agree the very idea of trying to create any kind of exhaustive list of social rolls' effects is an exercise in madness though. In my eyes there are only two ways to go at it:

      1. Don't allow its use on PCs (which doesn't solve the problem completely, and devalues the skills, but at least it takes creeping out of the equation).

      2. Accept that interpreting what the roll results do falls to the target's player as they will differ from one PC to the other. Yes, that means some people will play being unphased by them, which you can't do with a combat roll. Them's the breaks.

I suppose there's a third way - removing social rolls - but that'd gut the system, so I don't really count it as a real solution to anything.

All of these still come down to one thing in the end:

      Physical stats trump all.

Which is sort of the crux of the issue. A socially built character will always be hamstrung in comparison to a physical one, even though that's not how it should be in the narrative. I've witnessed how much it can suck to play social PCs, esp. with how many STs just phone it in throwing out Rando Mob #1923 for the plot one after the other without weaving some sort of social puzzle for those PCs.

If you hamstring them against PCs too so they can't even try doing their thing in day-to-day RP (even with people who may be amenable to it)........

      😕

"Feeling intimidated" is defined by the system. If the system says, "when a character successfully wins a contest of intimidation, X happens" then that is what happens, and if you don't like that, then don't play the game.

That said, you get to decide what intimidation means to you character. How do they handle being intimidated? How do they respond to it? What does it make them feel?

But so many people (this goes back to the issue on many games where people respond to everything with a 'shrug, whatever' no matter how horrifying, how awe inspiring, etc. because they are just 2COOL4SCHOOL) can't bear the idea of their character being intimidated by another that they just wanna go NOPE.

That is the issue, I think, at the crux of it. It's not that we're saying 'you must be intimidated in this one specific way!' it's that... you have to be intimidated at all and many of us who have done these rolls, on social PCs in the past, have had someone just nope out...

...because that person is playing one of those 'cool as a cucumber' type PCs who just never reacts to anything because they're just too cool or they've 'seen too much' or...

No one is trying to take agency or control of another PC. It's still about influence.

@a-meowley said in Do you read the book(s)?:

I think anyone who doesn't read the rulebooks can fuck off.

This is probably due to hand-holding assholes who refuse to read the rule books.

Read them. Read the rules. This is a text-based hobby. If we're using a specific system to run a game, there will be rules to the system. Read the rules. Bend them, change them, decide some of the theme or mechanics aren't right for you and make it known, but know what the original rules fucking are.

Jesus. I hate when people refuse to read the rules. It's rude, it's boring, it's lame. You're not going to retain everything, or even fully understand it - but that doesn't matter. Make the token effort to try.

Well, I think it's more: people who refuse to look things up.

I will always, during an event, have the books open and look stuff up. Or try to. I can't always find what I'm looking for, but I will do my best!

Because like I said, if I read it all up front, it's too much and I can't retain everything. It all becomes a jumbled, nonsensical mess. But I will read everything that is relevant to my PC. And if something comes up that is also relevant? I will read it.

If I can't find it? Or if I hit a snag? I'll ask! But I will def. try.

But yes, the people who just flat out refuse to ever read, ever learn, etc.... drive me up the wall. I have known a few of them over the years and I generally refuse to even go into plot scenes with them. Because I know the whole event will be 'teehee can someone look at my sheet and tell me what I should do???'

I didn't answer the poll because there's no 'sorta' field.

I read what I need for what I'm doing. And then I absorb more as I go along. If I read it all up front, I don't actually grok what I'm reading and none of it makes sense, so I retain nothing. But if I read what I need for CG, then hit the grid and take in more as I go, applying it situationally... that's how I learn best.

I am somewhat on the spectrum and one of the things I flag hard on is fabric aversions. Some days, what I might have been totally a-OK with yesterday... I am not today. I have had days where I will get dressed... and have to run back to the bedroom fifteen minutes later to change.

I keep a change of clothes in my car. I have to pack extra clothes when I travel (which annoys the hell out of me because I like to travel light).

I can handle business casual. I'd really suffer if I had to work a job where it was business/pro. I'm glad my current job lets me roll in in yoga pants and tank tops. We do have to dress up if clients are coming into the office tho.

I don't think this is super spoilery, and I can't find a spoiler syntax for the board.

She referenced Batman Beyond with the slang 'schway' and she referenced the Legion of Super Heroes by name dropping Lightning Lad, and referenced Atom II, Ryan Choi.

The little eyeball symbol to the far right of the editing tags is the spoiler tag.

Weather needs to make up its mind.

Couldn't walk the first few hours of the day. Hip is just ten million kinds of unhappy today.

Upside: today is the last day of OT from Hell.
Downside: headset died last night. No gaming this weekend. 😞 (I don't have speakers on my computer.)

My gaming headset died. Just suddenly shut itself off and won't come back on.

I'm leaving it plugged in overnight (though it was plugged in for a good 20? hours before I used it and I've used it for much longer stretches without it dying; it'd only been 2 hours!) to see how it does... but it didn't give me the 'low battery' chirps or anything. It just powered off and... that was that.

I know I could just buy a cheap one on payday, but with OT check being this coming Monday, now would be the time to buy a replacement one that's good (considering my desktop has no speakers, I rely solely on headset and I do game a fair bit). I was just hoping to finally invest in a gaming mouse vs just the cheap-ass one I have now (and by cheap I mean the mouse from the $25 wireless keyboard/mouse combo I bought a while back).

Just... damnit. I liked this thing, too. It was the Skullcandy Plyr2. Got it on sale a couple years ago.

How long in OOC time are the seasons planned to be?

Alien was roughly two months long. I think some will vary depending on what the story is, how things go, how much we all fuck it up in the process. But I think the goal is approximately in that range. It's why it's suggested that those who play be able to be on for at least a scene a week to stay caught up.
