    • RE: Recipes!

I really like soup, but I won't eat canned soup because it is overly processed and full of salt. I was really grateful, then, to find out how easy it is to make tomato soup.

      2 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil
      1 Tbs. unsalted butter
1 large white onion, finely chopped
      2 large cloves of garlic
      2 Tbs. all-purpose flour
3 cups lower-salt chicken or vegetable stock - I use Frontier instant vegetable broth, which I buy in bulk
28-oz. can whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes, puréed (include the juice)
      1-1/2 tsp. sugar
1 sprig fresh thyme (or substitute about 1 tsp. of good dried thyme, adding it when the soup is at the simmer)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 Tbs. thinly sliced fresh basil

Heat the oil and butter over medium-low heat in a 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven that won't react to the acidity of the tomatoes. When the butter is melted and stops foaming, add the garlic (put through a press) and the onions and cook until soft but not browned. Add the floor to the pan, stir it in thoroughly, and let it cook for a minute.

Add the broth, tomatoes (which I just crush with my hand in a large bowl), sugar--do not omit this--thyme, and 1/4 tsp. each salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat while stirring to prevent sticking. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 40 minutes.

Discard the thyme and let the soup cool for about ten minutes. Then, carefully blend it in a blender or a food processor in 2-3 batches. Return the soup to the pot, taste, and add the basil and more salt and/or pepper as needed. If you want it to be really good, let it cool, then refrigerate it for 24 hours before reheating and serving it (warm but not hot). The recipe says it will keep in the refrigerator if you bring it to a boil every two days and that it can even go into the freezer for up to three months.

edited so that it correctly reads "but not browned."

@Silver, It depends on where in Texas. I like El Paso and really like Fort Worth, but I can understand wanting Dallas and Waco to fall into a deep hole in the earth, never to be seen again. (Well, except for Kalachandji's in East Dallas, but I'm sure Krshna would fish them out in exchange for some of their papadums.)

As far as state-wide politics, though, Texas has given us two Bushes, Rick Perry, Tom Delay, Dick ArseholeArmey--sorry, I have a problem with assonance--and now Ted Cruz. Being the birthplace of the Church of the SubGenius can't make up for that.

Although my maternal grandfather's surname is Dutch, the ancestor of his whose history I know was from the duchy of Brunswick in Germany. My paternal grandmother's maiden name is definitely German, my paternal grandfather's surname is likely so, and my maternal grandmother's family name is English. I suspect on no good evidence beyond the name and country of origin that my paternal grandfather's family was Jewish not too many generations back. Needless to say, I have gotten second-degree burns from a summer afternoon at the lake with my shirt off.

@Misadventure Oh, sorry, I meant "I'll offer that story as an example." It's only one I have. (Well, I once saw @walls of Brooke getting kidnapped and I assume assaulted on SerenityMU*, but I figured that just meant it was Tuesday.)

I know I've used this example before, but the one time I've seen an aspect of rape RP truly "forced" on others was on Akashat. The victim in an publicly announced plot made her dramatic entrance and collapse in the main public room of the city grid. Everyone (including me) posed rushing over. She then as part of her next pose described both the external and internal mutilation of her character's genitalia as a result of the rape. I couldn't do anything for a few seconds; then, all I could manage was to say, "ooc I'm sorry, I have to leave" and exit the room.

@Misadventure, if you want examples of "what not to fucking do" for your behavior expectations, I'll offer that.

I have TSed in the past but do longer do. The reason was pretty simple: even though I kept both hands on the keyboard, doing it is still arousing. This meant I was getting aroused with another person who is not my partner, with whom I am monogamous. So, I felt guilty, and I stopped. None of this affects what anyone else does regarding TS, and I don't care what anyone else does.

@Thenomain Having a preferred pronunciation of "lol" is like having a preferred stance for explosively defecating on a public sidewalk.

There is a common "audio emoticon" on Second Life that literally says "lol." Pronounces it. As a single syllable. In the land of sheer what-the-fuckery that is SL, the fact that people would voluntarily use that may have been the most dumbfounding. (The people who had things like fully articulated giant spiders as their avatars did make me think that SL at least had the potential to be pretty fun if it weren't full of cretins.)

      Shit. Yes, it is.

With the Net Art Generator, you can feed in a title (such as Go Away You Posturing Jackass ), set a few options, and produce something like this:

      image

      You can get it here.

      @Rince

I had an extensive post written out for the issues list. I'm glad I held off on posting it.

You are correct that what I plan to do isn't the exact same as what you plan to do. Mine has to do with MU* as well or I wouldn't have mentioned it. Since the original idea is collaboration I wanted share my thoughts on the idea of such an undertaking as you and others have done before you in this topic and see if I could add something or have a firm link to whatever site you wish to create.

The obvious disdain you have in reply to my post for whatever reason was heard loud and clear too. However, in the end it only validates my reasons to do what I want to do and build what I want to build to help the MU* community and the general writing/RP community. SSDD.

Thanks for the encouragement. And the same to you as well.

And now we see (part of) why attempts to create MU* resources often flounder.

Honestly, it sounds like what everyone is talking about already is done by The Mudconnector. While that site is sloppy and frequently out of date because it never prunes old games, it still contains game listing that can be searched by a number of criteria and forums on a number of topics, including forums for both beginning and advanced administrators and coders.

It's also not a community-based project, but which is worse: a site whose problems come from a single administrator holding all the keys, or a site where five or six administrators likely will end up engaging in the same sort of power struggles that everyone has witnessed on a number of games? What do you do when vaspider volunteers to "curate" an area?

I suspect that the problem is not so much that new and better wheels need to be created, but instead that people--i.e., those who don't currently play on MU*s--don't want to ride in the car.

I have no idea why anyone would want to date someone substantially younger or older than them, save for the moneys.

I find that Atlantis is still the most reliable even if it has recently for me run afoul of a specific MU*'s wonky code. I hasn't been updated in a very long time, however, and most Mac clients seem to end up being abandonware.

Oh, and if anyone tells you to use Savitar, beat them over the head with a rake until they stop moving. The interface is bizarre, and I never got it to do anything but crash.

    • RE: Chargen: Appearance Information

I, too, was thrown off by "a little bit prettier." Since the color's not the issue, then, I think that narrative instructions like these are harder to follow than ones that simply list what you need to do:

Your description (@desc) should be no more than 5 to 7 lines long and include the basic facts of your character's appearance and clothing:

      • height in feet and inches
      • hair color, length, and style
      • eye color
      • complexion
      • body type or build
      • typical demeanor*
      • basic clothing

      Here is an example:

@desc me=Maribella is average height (5'6") for a woman with long blonde hair....

--and so on. I noted "typical demeanor" above because every game I have played expressly forbids players from including facial expressions or other character actions in a description, so that struck me as odd.

If you want to to stick with these narrative instructions, it would be best to have someone proofread them for grammar. As far as the layout, the hanging indentations are unusual but look good.

That was my reaction. Are those supposed to be highlighted keywords? If you read the red ones, you get: set in with desc and desc to get of like on.... I don't think this can be doing what you want it to do.
