@Thenomain said in Adapting FATE for MU*s:
Except that it's not a hobby built around storytelling. It's built upon minis-based war-games and Colossal Cave Adventure. We've brought storytelling to it because there were people interested in the medium but not the proto-MMO nature of Muds. I'd say that the modern day Mush came from the Socials of the early- to mid-90s.
I agree that MUSHes really sort of developed out of the Socials of the 1990's, with very freeform RP that didn't have any sort of rules or structure. I think the first MUSH supposedly cropped up in 1990 or so.
I'm curious where this connection to minis-based war-games and MUSHes comes about? I've never seen an intersection of the two.
I first started seeing RPG systems coming into things with oWOD when Masquerade started up.
Lost Dominion and Tenebrous Isles are two MUSHes that are using FATE.
@Runescryer Yeah, I never looked too hard at it, but I'll be looking out for http://www.ulisses-us.com/category/torg/.
@Runescryer I've been pouting for years for a TORG game. I'm waiting for the Kickstarter for the new version to go up.
Oh, I loved the Catspaw series
Regarding the Expanse, I've actually had this conversation before with @Kairos. He and I are both huge fans of the Expanse too. If you haven't watched it yet, highly recommended! I think the problem with doing Expanse as a MU* is that so much of it is about the political intrigue and the back-and-forth. Having so many threads going at once and then they get hooked in at just the right moment. That kind of coordination is nearly impossible in a MU setting when there are so many hands in the story "pie".
Yeah, it hasn't updated in almost 8 months now.
@ixokai
Ah gotcha. Not having either, I admit mixing them up isn't hard for me
I think one of the biggest reasons that they say 'no' is because they have to 'defend their copyright' or else it can be lost. So if you ask, they have to say no.
I think another part of this question is 'Which IPs have come after MU*'s to Cease and Desist?'
@Thenomain said in NO-GO IPs for MU*:
Last I knew, Steve Jackson Games was Mu*-unfriendly. I would consider anything from this company to be filled with land-mines for the online gamer.
Interestingly, http://www.sjgames.com/innomine/ lists MUSHes on their 'Resources and Pay Aids'.
Looks like it's ONLY for In Nomine: http://www.sjgames.com/general/online_policy.html
Create my own MUD, MUSH or computer game based on a SJ Games property?
In general, no. These conflict with our licensing program. If you are a professional game developer and want to talk about licenses, write to the Director of Licensing.
The exception to this rule has to do with the In Nomine background. You can get permission to run a M*, IRC channel, or other Online Roleplaying Community (ORC) for In Nomine. The details are right here.
@SG Isn't that kind of the backstory for Major Victory/Vance Astro of the Guardians of the Galaxy?
@Auspice It's awesome. Coder on Dark Spires is Exeter, I believe. He gave the OK for the code's distribution w/ credit (He might not have stipulated credit, but I always make sure it's there).
No need to page people joining the scene late, or if they've d/c'ed. They can just pull a recall on the last X number of poses to get caught up.
No pages, no channel spam.
Have several scenes in-progress? Just keep a separate object for each one then recycle after you've posted.
I highly recommend it for any game out there. I was on one game that refused to install it, I'm guessing because they thought it might be used to spy on players somehow? But 10/10, would recommend to a friend.
I've always felt it's good to have a place for other games to advertise. Most of the time it's not even a competing genre, anyhow. There's also not a great place to hear about other MU*'s except here and advertising here comes with some... risks
The Lost Dominion has a group specifically for Advertisements (http://lostdominion.org/category/roleplay/news/advertisements/) with our 'reciprocity' ad that can be posted on the other game. We don't police it or anything but generally if we post anywhere we try to post their ad in return.
@Thenomain Back in the day, X-Men: End Times (XET) also had a sort of 'RP Oscars' and I always thought they were a blast.
Nominating for them also meant people went back and reviewed the last year's logs, which is always kinda cool.
@skew Lithium's answer is the main reason, yes.
In addition, even if it wasn't so... complex (or as @Lithium said, "nightmarish"), it's hugely crunchy which was not what we were looking to use for a MUSH environment.
We agreed we wanted a system, but as more of something to make sure everyone had a shared understanding of what folks could do and for conflict resolution.
As of today we are formally and fully open. Staff would like to thank our Alpha and Closed Beta testers and everyone who came and played and provided feedback during Open Beta for helping us get this far.
So what does βfully openβ mean? It means that Staff has determined that additional major revisions to our system, setting and website are not likely to be necessary. There are still some tweaks and balances coming up, but nothing that should substantially alter the way anything is played. As always, feel free to send us tickets or talk to us on the MUSH if you see something thatβs wrong or have other feedback to provide and have a great year both on and off the MUSH.
Regards
The Fleet
