@Faceless That is amazing. Poor Razio.

My dream was actually more about talking to "pennies" (sorry no game spoilers for casual browsers) that could get me into the next plane of existence (through the mirror) for a little while to do something for them.

When I got there it was all destruction, and chaos and the world was crumbling. After a short little dream adventure having to do with getting sight of one of the First Children, when I got out... everything was alright except... someone found out and wasn't happy about it.

Azazel was coming for me. I'm tipped off, and start locking the doors and the windows, as if that's going to help.

I had a similar experience. There just wasn't enough activity/stuff going on in my time zone.

I submitted a PrP I still want to do, but I kinda backed off and let Arx swallow me whole again because there's a number of people that are active at the weird times I am. It seemed as if staff had a lot to catch up on after the holidays!

Also like, the few scenes I had, there was this one guy that just creeped me out a bit and he was the only one to play with. 😐 I wanna come back though. Maybe I will in the next few days and see what's cookin!

@fortydeuce Welcome to the most addictive MU I have ever come across. I think we have crossed paths ICly within the last two or three days.

I had to take a brief break previously, not because of any fault of the game, and I have jumped back in with both feet. Thankfully, I have an etch-a-sketch memory and the ability to do pretty near complete memory wipes and I get to rediscover the game again. Ugh. It's oh so addictive that I think I spend about 12 hours logged in a day, so hey if you need any help I know exactly your situation. Let me know if there's anything I can help with.

Ugh I think this post needs to go into the hog pit I have a bone to pick with @Apos for not offering counseling services for the withdrawal I've had. (I'm joking).

But also seriously damn this game for sucking up every ounce of free time I have. Crazy about it.

I hope you know what you're getting in to. You've been warned. I hope you don't have a life. It's now Arx. Arx is life.

Wow. I wasn't expecting such an overwhelmingly helpful response and so quickly too!

First of all, thank you everyone for your input and guidance. It is extremely appreciated.

@roz said in Questions About Evennia:

@nyctophiliac said in Questions About Evennia:

      1. How customizable is the system? Like say for instance I wanted to run an nWoD 2.0 game (>_>), is it feasible? Is the current release stable enough for my coder to tinker around with tweaking this?

AFAIK you can do anything you want as long as you know Python. It comes with very little built in out of the box.

      1. Wiki! I've been looking at the games hosted, and they all have wikis that seem similar in design. Is this powered by a 3rd party wiki something akin to mediawiki? Or was it hand coded to suit Evennia?

There's a default website template, which is why a lot of the websites look similar, but they're not wikis.

Thank you! You hit the nail on the head with both of these responses. Especially about the webpage/wiki. I just assumed it was some kind of wiki because of all the integration Arx has. No wonder it works, it's not done in media wiki. XD

@rnmissionrun said in Questions About Evennia:

      1. It's very customizable, but of course non-trivial things will require some skill to accomplish.

      2. Not sure what you mean by this, are you talking about the main Evennia wiki?

      3. The core system is functional but still pretty light since it's meant to be an extensible framework and not a MU*-in-a-box type of thing. There's no mail system, boards system , no concept of object "ownership" in the traditional sense, characters don't even have genders, etc. There are numerous contributed modules that make up for some of these, you can find those here.

Thank you! This list of modules is like 15k% helpful and I think what I was looking for when I asked for a "features list".
As for the wiki, I did mean what Roz mentioned, like why did all of the games that use evennia look related? I wanted to know if they used some kind of established wiki to create their webpage/template, and if so, was it integrated?
I know there was an issue recently with a bridge between evennia and mediawiki, which was another reason why I was asking. I've tried to integrate mediawiki before into chat clients and such for a web pages java chat RPG site I hosted for about 3 or 4 years. I could never, ever get the bridge to work.

We are not tired of people asking questions in the Evennia support channel. 🙂 If people don't reply right away it's usually because people are preoccupied, not that they ignore you. Time zone differences are also a thing, People are spread all over.

      1. Yes. Evennia works quite differently under the hood compared to your average mush though.
      2. Evennia is its own web server and has a default website and webclient it starts along with the server. There is no wiki out of the box.
      3. Maybe https://github.com/evennia/evennia/wiki/Evennia-Introduction or https://github.com/evennia/evennia/tree/master/evennia/contrib ?

As for learning Python, I recently wrote a tutorial for people wanting to get their very first taste of Python through Evennia-examples only. You (should) only need a text editor and Evennia up and running to start. You can find it here: https://github.com/evennia/evennia/wiki/Python-basic-introduction

      @RnMissionRun
I don't agree with this notion. Of course you can always make relevant comparisons. For someone like you who used mush and now is learning Evennia, just documenting the pitfalls and things you have to think differently about to progress would be useful to others.

Oh please don't misunderstand 🙂 I never thought you guys were /truly/ tired of answering my questions at all. As a matter of fact, whenever I have posed a question of any sort on the IRC/Discord channel, I've always gotten a response. Incredibly helpful community you have. And I'm glad you haven't tired of me just yet because I have 0 experience in coding and will likely be asking hundreds more. (Ok. Well I do CSS, PHP, Java, HTML but those are hardly relevant at the moment).
I'm going to have a look through your python basic introduction as soon as possible to see if I can wrap my head around it. I do have a python module coming up in college, but in the meanwhile I'm attempting to get my feet wet a bit by learning /something/. I usually just start with a project, break it repeatedly, and then fix it until I finally know what I'm doing.

If you have your heart set on a wiki I'm sure there's a lot of random django apps for it. Googled and saw https://github.com/django-wiki/django-wiki at a glance.

Going to look into this as well. I do LOVE wikis. As a game admin, I am an organizational freak and I like how I can structure a wiki, present information, organize it, etc, and have other contributors as well to aid in the fleshing out of a world, leave their mark, etc. As a player, I like contributing to settings when I can. Makes my tiny shriveled black heart grow three sizes.

@tirit said in Questions About Evennia:

Evennia is a great way to go. Since it uses Python it can pretty much do anything Python can. Excluding anything in Python3.

Also Python is a much easier concept to learn then the old outdated MU code.

The index is a good way to find out which games are being developed. Arx being the current one that's past the pre-alpha/alpha stage.

If you want to discuss more, you can also login to connect.deepshadowsmush.com and ping Bremen. I can talk to you about development on Evennia as well from a person who knows nothing about programming and how much easier Evennia was to do.

I played on Arx for a while and it's what made me fall in love with Evennia.
Not that I don't think Thenomain and others haven't made strides with it and made beautiful systems. That's where I fell in love with MU'ing. In fact, if I could figure out mushcode, I'd be perfectly happy running my mu on it. Sadly, there's more documentation/resources available for learning python. Or Ruby for ARES. Which is ultimate why I'm steering this direction.
Also! I have logged in to deep shadows and I'm poking around a bit. I don't expect to be around all that much until the Holidays are over, but I hope to run into you there soon. I look forward to it.

If you're an experienced MUSHer interested in learning Evennia, I suggest that first, you get yourself a good Python tutorial and learn the basics of the language. Remember, Evennia is 100% Python, you will need to know it and knowing it beforehand will help you make sense of things when you start tinkering with the actual server. Once you're a little familiar with Python, install Evennia and start tinkering. If you have questions, join the IRC or, in the event that you're turned off by the MUD-centric nature of most of the IRC chatter, find a game in the Evennia Games Index and try asking for help there. I'm always happy to answer questions on my site (The Big Empty) and Tirit is also (Deep Shadows).

I agree that this might be how I need to start. I am going to familiarize myself with Python first, because I need to know, at the very least, the terminology! So thank you for the direction 🙂 I may hit you up after the holidays are over and the dust settles from the stampede of family obligations upon me. I appreciate it very very much.

@Thenomain : A special thank you for your contributions on this thread, too.

Sorry I didn't get to some of the comments (a few were above my head :3) But I love the discussion and it's getting my gumption up to start something!

So I've got questions about Evennia that maybe some people around here could answer without me bugging the poor people on the discord/irc server that are probably tired of me bugging them.

      1. How customizable is the system? Like say for instance I wanted to run an nWoD 2.0 game (>_>), is it feasible? Is the current release stable enough for my coder to tinker around with tweaking this?

      3. I could have sworn there was a module/feature list that I just cannot find again - am I mistaken? Can someone point me in the right direction? (Examples: bboard, paging, battle system, etc).

      Thank you in advance.

I was a bit hesitant to join at first because of the system but as it turns out it's a really simple, streamline system with great +helps and documentation. Beautiful MU with a lot of functionality without going overboard with commands. Beautiful Wiki. Staff some of the most friendly I have come across. The players helpful. The setting well developed and thought out. Nicely active. Very flexible and willing to work with quirky characters. I am really enjoying it so far.

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

After reading a little bit through this thread and lurking for some time I thought that I would post my impressions of Arx to add to the fair mix here.

I joined in February, I think, after some friends recommended the place.

I was reluctant to say the least, as I am not a fan of custom systems as a rule of thumb and with very little information about the setting on the wiki I was skeptical at best. Especially after numerous failed attempts at MU games in my recent history.

After about 2-3 weeks I found myself hooked.

The player base was supportive with a complete newb and helped me through the learning curve.
Never once did I find it to be cliquey - whenever I asked for RP, I got it. Whenever sitting alone in a room with the looking for RP flag on, I am always visited. No one has ever "blocked" my RP. No one has ever turned me away when I asked for help. No one has ever been rude to me. Not to say I haven't had my scuffles OOCly with one person who was recently banned.

Staff was helpful when I needed advice and direction. They have always been friendly but firm and direct and I keep communication open with them as much as possible (much to their chagrin, probably).

Honestly, I have never been happier on a MU. It's fast paced, well managed/organized, responsive, and friendly.

That being said, I think the most frustrating things for me have been the lack of social combat system (which means everyone settles everything by duels lending to a "Euro L5R" feel - not necessarily bad, but frustrating for the social types) and lack of information/wiki type stuff (They are really good about answering your setting questions, but honestly I would love to dig my teeth into some reading about the place). I know these things are on the way though and the place is still in Beta.

@Ganymede : We played together before on two different MUs ever so briefly (one scene each!) and honestly I would adore it if our paths crossed again one day. If you joined Arx I would be happy. You were fun in those two scenes, and I really think you'd like it at Arx.

This probably isn't part of the "beginner" tag you've put this under, but I'm curious as to how to change the room "decoration". Like for example my OOC place is named the terminal, so the top line reads

      <================================( Terminal )================================>

How do I change the whole look there? How do I change the color?
Do I have to do it room by room or is there a code that will wholesale change every room's appearance/color?

      @Groth said:

The two most distinguishing features of vampires are the sunlight allergy and the fact they feed on human blood. So if you're playing Vampire instead of Mage, Werewolf, Hunter or D&D, it's expected that you're somewhat interested in the idea of playing an undead monster that preys on people at night.

From a game design perspective you then want the player to care as much about preying on humans as the vampire does, the player should be thinking about how to get their next fix of blood. The way most games choose to do this is by making all the vampires special powers fueled by blood, requiring the player to regularly find a source to renew themselves. In VTR/VTM the vampire also loses blood daily requiring them to find blood sources even if they're not actively using their powers.

Since being a predator is such a big thing about vampire, you ideally want feeding to be something that's done on screen, in video games you'll usually have a feeding attack you're expected to use regularly. However in TTRPG's or MU* it's not practical to have every feeding event on-screen however since it's still a big thematic point, you'll want some mechanic that makes the player pay attention to when/where they feed. In TT that usually means making a roll with some sort of modifiers and if you fail, then your feeding went awry in some fashion. In MU* however you can take the opportunity to play up another part that's a big part of being a predator, territoriality.

By making blood limited on a grid-square basis (Abstractly representing the difficulty of getting away with several feedings in the same area in a short amount of time) you make the players care very much about who feeds where and when. It's in their interest to control some part of the grid and determine who feeds their in order to guarantee their own supply of blood as well as being able to offer blood supply to others in return for favours.

Talking about the chances of getting away with feedings based on population numbers is missing the point. Handwaving feeding in Vampire is like handwaving breaking&entering in Shadowrun or exploring the dungeon in D&D. Regardless of your chances to get away with it, it's something you're expected to care about and you want complications to happen somewhat regularly so you have the opportunity to use your fancy vampire powers to make them go away.

Also, yes. Thank you Groth! ❤

    • RE: Request: Downtime System + Hunting/BP System

I think this thread is veering off of the topic and most of this should be addressed in our other thread, but once again, thank you for the interest in the questions.

I think the issue has been resolved and answered very thoroughly, but I would like to maybe retract a word I used. I think I used "scarce" earlier, I think people interpreted this as "man its really hard to find a human to drink from" when what I really meant was that the Masquerade is a real thing and taking pints of blood from people is A) Dangerous, B) strange enough to be noticed, and C) Something other vampires can and will use as a pretext to kill/have you killed for.

The average human body contains...what, 5 pints of blood? Each pint of blood is a single blood point. Take 1/5th of someones blood and you just fucked them up
Combine that with your beast constantly screaming that you need to take more blood, not just one, but all of it!
Now you lost control because you decided to feed from 7 different people and couldn't beat the beast back 7 times and you have some corpses on your hands and the Sheriff is not a happy camper.
Now, imagine all the vampires of a city trying to pack themselves into the same fashionable nightclubs and doing the same thing. This is why Vampires have Domains that say "Mine only or i gut you".

In conclusion, blood is the currency of Vampires. It shouldn't be too hard to too easy to get it (that's why the writers supplied us with rolls to use). But regardless it needs to be kept track of, it's as simple as that. The STs need to keep track of where it comes from and how it's obtained, because Vampires should care about that. Otherwise, it basically sucks out the political underpinnings of the entire game and where it's not kept track of and you can find games full of two things, rather than politics and plot:

      1. Debauchery. Bored vampires on MUs usually do nothing but TS. Most venues are lacking in their political ambitions because "Meh whats the point? I'm fed!" There's no motivation to be politically ambitious or even inclined.
      2. Seriously Silly Shit. Like when the STs of one MU decided to insight RP by killing off a major NPC. (Not a terrible idea in and of itself). One PC stepped up and took his place with no political backing (only the fact he was connected more than anyone else) and the other players had no idea how to oppose him other than running him off the chat. Without the political underpinning and motivation of blood, it turned into a place where I didn't necessarily want to play because the way you played politics was to have the biggest dick waver on your side as well as the best OOC shit talkin'/back stabbin' game.
A game not based on being a vampire is not my idea of a good vampire game. What I am trying to achieve with IPD is an actual game with actual plot where provided Vampire thematics are not only there but enforced so that no one goes full retard.
