    • What's So Hard About Ruby?

So I've seen a couple of comments now to the effect of 'Ugh, Ruby is such a pain and so hard to program in', and admittedly I'm kind of lost on that one. Especially when it comes from people that can do MU-code and/or are working on Python for Evennia.

Python, to me, seems infinitely more finicky and picky about all of its various little whatsits and One True Right and Only Way-ism. And yet, people still think Ruby is harder?

      Why? What's the deal?

Genuinely curious. I'm a ruby amateur, but I'm wondering if there's some kind of programming pitfall that I'm about to step into down the line.

It's really super sweet that my dog is very concerned about how sick I am and just wants to lay next to me and cuddle.....

It would also be much more effective if he'd stop releasing gag-inducing farts, like, right on me when I already have food poisoning.

      you nasty

Oof. I know this situation well.

Wouldn't want @desc to get mixed up with +desc or desc, afterall! 😉 😜

Dare I even ask why you'd have three versions of a desc command that presumably have different enough functions that a prefix would matter?

Am I the only one who just doesn't really care for Ares?

      I mean, honestly?

You're kind of in a minority, to be sure.

For every person I've heard say they really don't care for Ares, very few of them can point to anything in particular aside from, potentially, pacing. And most people that I've heard have reservations about Ares eventually come to love it. Or at least hate it less than they hate the old-style MU formats.

So you might not be the only one. But given the march of technology, you're definitely a dying breed, I think.

      @wizz @solstice

I watched the first one. I was less than impressed.

I didn't like the animation style, and the story felt like it was just strongly shoehorned into Star Wars so that they could tell the story of some wandering ronin dueling but with lightsabers!

I haven't watched others, but that first one was jarring enough that I'm debating on whether I want to continue.

Isn't it interesting, though, that they seem to want to put 10 alts on one game instead of one alt on 10 games?

Not necessarily, no, though it could be!

Generally, one game is going to have a very different feel to it than the others, something that clicks more with you than what else is on offer.

There are like counts approximately -- five or so public Ares games using FS3 for Supernatural Shenanigans, but there's approximately 1, maybe, that I would consider playing on for various reasons.

The fact that people will play on some games, but not others, even when running nominally the same stuff isn't the surprising or confusing part. It's more -- how do you even keep up with that many characters? Why do you need that many?

Or just allow players only one PC.

This is the one I'm always for. But the altaholics out there would gather the pitchforks and torches, I think.

But as a general rule, if you have enough characters to populate your own entire kingdom, you might have too many alts.

Courtiers are quite literally one-third of the entire game. You can't just write them out.

I agree with @ominous and others. If your character exists to be a social butterfly then there should be mechanics for those proficiencies. You should have to roll checks the same as swinging a sword if it's for somethi g substantive and not Lady Imsaria's Thirteenth baby shower in three years praise the Light!

      Good news!

Old man went to the vet today. She said that she doesn't think it's infected, and the tear duct is producing as normal. The distension of the third eyelid is most likely due to allergies, in her opinion, but she still gave us some antibacterial salve to put on it for a few days, and put him on a Benadryl regimen.

Other than that he appears to be in good health. She recommended aspirin on days he's feeling especially stiff but didn't wanna put him on a regular dose because it could mess with his stomach.

Old man is just old! And has allergies.

@derp Open to checking it out. Does it have enough crunch?

Asking with acknowledgement that Shadowrun typically has more than enough crunch.

      -r

I think so? It's got coverage for all your major stuff, and it's very streamlined and rules light while still being shadowrun. You just leave all the hyper-detailed stuff on the floor. Spells? Yes. Rules for explosions in various levels of confined quarters? Not so much.

It also includes a system for spending points where you negotiate outcomes with your ST that is very neat.

Honestly considering revisiting Shadowrun 5th Edition.

May I suggest Anarchy? It would also work well for a MU and require much less reading for new players.

    • RE: The Dog Thread

Not sure whether to put it here, or in RL sads.

My dog is getting older. His breed is expected to live 12-14 years, and in April he'll be 11. He's starting to show signs of it, too.

Once upon a time, I'd open the door and he'd run out with me, all full of energy. He still goes with me, but he's slower, and you can tell that his joints are starting to bother him. He's not as mobile as he used to be. Jumping is almost ou tof the question at this point, but he climbs ok. Except when he doesn't.

Recently, he's started showing symptoms of dry eye. His right eye looks terrible. I made a vet appointment, but I know that they're going to put him on drops for the rest of his life.

I have mixed emotions. He's been a part of my life for so long that I can't imagine life without him. But at the same time, I know that he'll be gone sooner than I'd like.

Yet I know that he was loved. He knows that he was loved. He has lived the fullest, happiest life I could give him. Which, honestly? Sometimes I could have been better. If it came down to taking care of me or taking care of him, he won out, every time, and yet there were still times that I just felt so guilty because I couldn't afford something he needed.

Anyway, he's still relatively healthy and happy, and I am gonna make the most of that. But it just sucks so much, seeing him get older and start to struggle and look at me with that face that says he expects me to fix it, or help, the same as when he was a puppy -- and knowing that old age is about the one thing that I can't fix for him.

See, I like both of them. I loved 2.

But I'm all about that slow descent into the dark and twisty parts as layer upon layer of horror comes to light as you, the player, just tag along for the ride.
