      @greenflashlight

You're a person who's attracted to a person. That's a very people thing to do. All the other qualifiers are pretty much irrelevant.

I'm fairly sure that every person on this board has at least one story about being attracted to someone outside of their usual preferences.

Nothing to feel wrong about. That's as human as it gets.

That isn’t supposed to matter in medicine either.

And people aren't supposed to refuse safe treatments to save their lives, either, but this is the world we live in now. I get that people take medical ethics seriously. I work in a profession with serious ethics rules, too. But I think that the people who can be vaccinated and refuse are stretching the limits of ethics to their breaking point.

I don't know what else to say to people. If you won't get two free shots in the arm to avoid spreading a plague to hundreds, or potentially thousands, of people, knowing full well that bad outcomes happen every day, then you've decided to roll the dice with fate not just for yourself, but for everyone around you.

The drunk driver would be criminally prosecuted and forced to make amends, but the person that refused a vaccination and spreads a disease to all those other people will never be held accountable for the lives that they cost.

      No sympathy.

Well, that is that, my trusty laptop is officially dead. Thought it was maybe the battery, so I replaced it and tried all the fixes I could find when it wouldn't power on, but no luck. Something vital is most likely fried.

I am so frustrated but at the same time so resigned to it that I just sat there for like five minutes after closing everything back up.

Can't afford a new laptop right now, so I just straight up don't have a computer. Thus, can't take the coding courses I was hoping to take, can't study, etc etc etc.

It's just one more shitty thing this year on a pile of them so I can't even work up the energy to be truly upset about it.

So. I've been in this situation before. And it really, truly sucks.

What I can say, though, is that laptops can come extraordinarily cheaply.

I have this little guy that I take with me to work. It's by no means a powerhouse or anything, but I've never experienced any kind of serious performance issue with it unless I have a billion browser tabs open. I can use it to listen to spotify or something while running Atom, which is a memory beast, and modifying Ares stuff with a MU client in the background.

And, best of all, since it's through Walmart.com, you can use teh Paypal option and try to qualify for the Pay-In-4, where they split it up over your next 4 paychecks.

I know that it's not a great option when you're feeling strapped for cash, and it's certainly no gaming notebook or whatever. But just for work and school, I've found that it meets all of my needs and still lets me stream just fine right out of the box.

Might be worth looking into. Sorry that I can't be of more help than that right now, but I know that the gamers in this community, no matter how much we might be at each others' throats all the time, have each other's backs. Maybe you could set up a GoFundMe or something for donations toward something new? Even if just a temporary fix.

ETA: It will run Atom and Discord at the same time while doing those other things, which on my HP notebook will absolutely crash it, but it's a dinosaur.

@arkandel said in Pandemic Era Issues:

There are other medical conditions caused by people doing something wrong - do we not treat patients for cancer who refuse to give up smoking, for example?

I think there is a fundamental difference here, though. When you refuse to give up smoking when being treated for cancer, you're ultimately only hurting yourself. We can get into debates about the dangers of secondhand smoke, or whatever, but ultimately, COVID is much more lethal in the very short term and can affect a great many more people, including the network of exposure that it creates.

This is actively endangering other people, and there are good faith arguments to be made that the maximum good, and the maximum amount of lives saved, would be best served by refusing treatment if they refuse the most effective treatment in favor of continuing to endanger others while putting a strain on a medical profession that is already stretched to its limit. This is no different from any other sort of battlefield triage, just stretched over a longer timescale.

While I'm never going to actively cheer the deaths of the willfully unvaccinated, especially when it's widely available and free, I have absolutely zero sympathy for them. You made your choices.

@silverfox said in Good or New Movies Review:

I know that there are many different dialects of Chinese - is it appropriate when you don't know what the exact dialect is to call it 'Chinese'?

I mean, linguistically it would be correct. I don't know how the cultures feel about it.

The different 'dialects' are usually really different languages altogether, but they share similar grammatical structures and a (generally) shared writing system with minor quirks in order and some forms. You might not be able to understand each other's spoken language, but if you write it down, pretty much every Chinese language will be able to get the gist of it.

So calling them dialects is kind of a misnomer, but they share enough structure that communication is possible, even if only in writing and probably not with complete accuracy.

WoD Mushes that I know of:

      • Fallcoast
      • City of Hope
      • Liberation
      • Modern Nights

Given that you said 'everything for everyone' I assume that you are probably not interested in Fallcoast.

City of Hope I have never played on. I have no idea what they're about or what they offer, just that I have heard the name and maybe looked at the website once.

Liberation has some issues in the Mage department, other spheres report they are having fun. @Sundance is HBIC and is pretty responsive to issues, even if I disagree with overall management style. Probably worth a shot.

Modern Nights is open, but small, and I think only offering Vampire and Mage at the moment with some psychic stuff thrown in for flavor, so that might be more to your liking, but you won't find a ton of players there just yet, so you might wanna bring a few of your own.

I mean, I find that this is rarely the case so long as there are no consequences for the undesirable behavior. People need incentive to change. If he can use his condition as leverage to keep his world at status quo no matter how awful he becomes, then there's no reason to self-regulate.

Consider an Ares game which - if you're logged on from the web - will display a generic picture of the room you're in. So when you visit the Blue Hearts bar you'll see a picture of a specific bar on the upper right corner.

How have I never seen this?

Is this an out of the box behavior or does it require custom code outside of just -- finding the picture?

      Waaaaaant.

Ares ties into your browser/computer's notifications system, so whether that supports sounds will vary depending on your browser/OS.

I'm on a windows machine for work purposes and let me tell you those notifications come through loud. I'm just listening to my music on the Youtubes and suddenly CHIME-OF-DEAFNESS +11

      Yeah. There are ways. <.<

      ETA:
      @SquirrelTalk

Also, in Ares at least, it supports the ability to change your favicon when there is new activity in the window. Por ejemplo:

      alt text

The default one has like a little dot or something on it but that one wasn't bold enough for me so I need something big and red to catch my attention.

ETA2: Well, more specifically, it supports the ability for a game admin to do so but I am sure that you can sweet talk them into it!
