RE: MUers in the news?

So, I'll say my piece: creating and enforcing a monoethnic game are racist choices.
In @Nymeria's case, she strongly asserts that her game is not mono-ethnic. But if you want to play anyone with any kind of actual power, importance, influence, etc, you have to be from the Noble houses, which are all apparently white-as-the-driven-snow.
Which is exactly the kind of systemic racism that we're still dealing with. So it doesn't even get a wash for not-actually-monoethnic because it's creating a clear power disparity for those who aren't in the Superior Caste.
I want to make that very clear.
And for those of you who questioned this before, let me say this very loudly:
Racism. Is. Wrong. This is not an argument, this is a statement of principle. I and @reimesu had a long discussion about whether we wanted to try to sieve out the Mod Voice stuff from the Personal Voice stuff on this one, and while I didn't get a chance to chat with @Runescryer about it I'm pretty sure that we're all on the same page:
MSB doesn't support racism and we absolutely will not be "fairly engaging" with racist ideas in an attempt for someone to try to justify why their bigotry is acceptable based on some kind of convoluted logic dance.
Nope.

That is actually pretty fascinating and now I am down a rabbit hole.

Or you could offer explanations for potential players that make sense for your world. The choice is yours, but you could help applicants instead of asking them to be mind-readers.
I haven't said that we don't? If someone wants an unusual concept, we work with them. But yes, we do ask that they know the material and have MUSHed before in those instances, because it is harder to play as an outsider.
Why must they be outsiders? Why not descendants of a previous political intermarriage? Why not any of the ten thousand other ways people of color can and do exist? People move. Spread. Itâs what weâre best at. And we know they do in this world. So why not just embrace that instead of the consistent doubling down on this idea that skin color somehow matters to the setting when we know it doesnât?
This is the part that I donât get. You have been handed opportunity after opportunity to be diverse and inclusive and avoid all the pitfalls of systemic or overt racism and you consistently say âno.â
What else are we supposed to make of that?

RE: MUers in the news?
You didnât want to argue with a moderator that quoted actual parts of the book wherein vampires were doing exactly what you insisted they donât do? The point wasnât to accuse you of also being a racist but that these insistences on the absolute purity of the subject matter at hand usually come from people filling in their preferences and head canon and not the material itself.
And as we can see, some people take it much too far.
Apologies for any confusion. Itâs not as bad as racism. Not even a little.

RE: MUers in the news?
Yes, Nymeria, clearly THAT is the important takeaway from the last statement made. Not the blatant racism and discrimination going on, but what license agreement there might be.
Seriously? Are we going to do this dance again? Can you maybe, I dunno. Just fucking stop with the insistence on people having the "proper" skin color in 2022? Because that is SUCH a big "oof."
-
RE: MUers in the news?
Which just reads, "Ignore the fact that licensed materials depict some of these noblemen as non-white, we're going to ignore that to stick strictly to rules that allow us our very strict idea of racial purity."
You're still not looking great here.

We have no "only white characters" rule. However, the character database is 99% Westerosi nobles because we wanted to focus on court roleplay. In book canon, that limits the ethnicities available.
That sounds an awful lot like a thin veil over a 'all important characters must be white' rule. Phrased another way, "you can play a non-white character if you want but if you want to be part of this game's action then you need to make a white character." We've already seen depictions of brown and otherwise indigenous-looking characters in the books, so we know they exist.
This is like the person that insisted that Anne Rice's vampires don't have sex despite them being depicted as such in the books. You're looking for a purity that you're largely imagining, using it to justify a bias that adds absolutely nothing to your games other than satisfying your biases, and people are rightly calling you out on it.

RE: Wanted: Concepts and PCs for a Good-Guy Cadre
That was the original goal of the Steelmaws pack. I don't know if they're still doing that or not. Might be worth reaching out.

Oh look, the comments section is just a bunch of racist nonsense. Glad we got that out of the way. sighs

So, in the future, I won't mention any possibilities of who the person in question might be, but just a more general 'creeper' alert, advising players and Staff to be aware that there's potential creeper activity noticed on a game and that Staff of the game is investigating. No names, no details until they're okayed by Staff to be released upon completion of an investigation. No speculation of which bad actor might be returning...
Nah. Fuck that. Do exactly what you did here, because it's actually useful rather than whatever kind of weird-ass vaguebooking they're mad about. The behaviors were creepy and problematic and should have been called out.

RE: Movie / TV / Streaming Peeves or Whatever
Then again, Netflix has always done incredibly stupid shit. Let's all remember Sense8 got cancelled despite being wildly popular and having incredible numbers, and then under pressure we finally got the meh-alright movie that wrapped it up poorly.
Netflix survives on name recognition and ubiquity in the market, not on actual savvy business practices.

So... My problem is that it literally conflicts with a point explicitly laid out in the books. I am pretty sure you are either remembering it wrong or sourcing it from a book after the first three in the series, or the Vampire Armand, or Pandora, all of which I have read and in none of which there are vampires fucking.
Well, I suppose I beg to differ on this. I was referencing book 4 of the Vampire Chronicles, but I know for a solid fact that there is vampire sex in Pandora.
He covered me and kissed my cheek. âDrink from me,â he said, âdrink until the pain goes away. Itâs only the body dying, drink Pandora, you are immortal.â
âFill me, take me,â I said. I reached down between his legs.
âIt doesnât matter now.â
But it was hard, this organ I sought, the organ forever lost to the god Osiris. I guided it, hard and cold as it was, into my body. Then I drank and drank, and when I felt his teeth again on my neck, when he began to draw from me the new mixture that filled my veins, it was sweet suckling, and I knew him and loved him and knew all his secrets in one flash which meant nothing. He was right. The lower organs meant nothing. He fed on me. I fed on him. This was our marriage.
They don't think sex is super awesome compared to drinking blood but they absolutely can and do have sex. Marius and Armand have sex with a woman, Louis compares sex to drinking blood in interview and finds it lacking, I'm sure there are a handful of others that I'm just forgetting.
I think you're being overly purist about a thing that isn't as pure as you're remembering it to be.

@Bellecourt said in Movie / TV / Streaming Peeves or Whatever:
When this comes out can someone else who is a big Anne Rice fan let me know how it goes because the journalists covering it are not giving me much hope for what interest I'm going to find there.
Granted, it's been some time since I read the series, but I don't remember this actually being the case? Lestat spends pretty much the entire series banging it out with various people. Louis, Nicolas, Akasha. From what I remember of TotBT, it's not that they can't fuck. They do. It just isn't as pleasurable to them as drawing blood. But I distinctly remember Akasha having some ways to seduce our boy L, and both sexuality and sensuality are presented in big bold letters throughout the whole thing.
So I'm not sure how that's a significant deviation from the source material. We seem to be remembering it two very different ways.
I don't even necessarily see the bits about Claudia being problematic, as Claudia makes it pretty clear that Louis has never really looked at her as anything other than a child and it pisses her off because she's like a hundred years old and wants to get down.
So I guess I'm unclear on why this would be a dealbreaker for you? Is it because you don't see yourself represented in the story if these changes are made?
