Let me ask a different question for the thread.

Is 'knowing how to fight iRL' - having some kind of background in martial arts, or even just watching MMA stuff on TV - an advantage to roleplaying such scenes?

Depends on what you mean by advantage. My answer is yes and no. I do think you get a better idea of how it would play out (mentally choreographing it and the realism aspect), but I think it safe to say that having that knowledge and, more importantly, the communication of that knowledge are two very different things when it concerns roleplaying it out. Some people with the background in martial arts would be better suited for advising a LARP, for example, because of being able to physically demonstrate and/or correct postures and movements, but if you asked them to do it in writing you might get less than you expected, simply because they can't translate their thoughts into writing.

@Cobaltasaurus I'm not sure if it's marginally funny (it kind of is now?) but:

      The Dead PSU

Those water marks you see would be what my power supply got from a somewhat empty jar of stuffed olives (the brine) going into the top of my PC case back in January. The motherboard (partially seen above) was ground zero from where my clumsy ass knocked over that jar on the desk. I was really lucky that both the SSD or HD on the now-old rig survived with the data intact for me to salvage some really important files.

Shelled out $1200 for a new PC that could handle the gaming things I do. Also known as: "what tax return" 😐

I realize I'm being a bit of a peanut gallery here, but I always feel like "No and here's why" should be the default for most (not necessarily all) answers from staff, particularly if it touches on points of theme. Not all points can be disclosed in detail, especially if the subject involves any ongoing plots and metaplots, but I do think being terse should be avoided more often than not.

When you type in a MU* command, have a stray thought, then 5 seconds later type that exact same command, at which point you stare at your screen as the same wall of text you just looked at comes to sucker punch you in the face again.

Big Sekrits time... How many of you dive into typing a pose before you have any idea what your character is actually gonna do? Just type whatever pops in your head at the moment apropos to the situation, developing the action and text only as it's coming out of your fingers.

I don't edit or spellcheck either.

*this only pertains to my PCs, not ST'd shit.

I've found I don't have much problem with spellcheck, but holy cow do I fail on the proofreading point no matter what I'm doing. The worst thing I do is redundancy, which most commonly manifests when I'm adding terms like "also" and its synonymous phrases. "I've also been known to say that too." <- That kind of sentence is what I mean by redundant, there's an extra sentiment of inclusion. Happens so. damn. much, and I don't always catch it, but I see it after and I implode a little inside because I sent that emit/pose and can't change it after.

Indeed! It's a symptom of my work mentality: DO IT PROPERLY, PEOPLE. 😐 It's also what I tend to like playing color-wise in MtG (when I'm in the mood to play MtG), so it's a 2-for-1 significance really. Plus, I like the Azorius symbol and the fact it's actually called the Maze of Azorius.

Watching someone make a bold choice that is so deeply IC for their character even though it risks very serious IC consequences that could bring the end of that PC's story. But it's the choice that sticks truest to the heart of a character. Just really exciting to see.

Amen to this. I may or may not be about to +request this very thing to one of my current characters... >.>

I have simple tastes with respect to the thread title:

That feeling of excitement for entertaining stuff coming out despite the fact I know that I will inevitably be tearing my hair out over it (because of other people, and sometimes yours truly). This is also known as an MMO Expansion launch (and raiding).

Sleeping in when I don't have to go to work or any appointments. Wake up, look at clock. Peace out for two more hours or until I feel like it.

My brain. Kind of conceited, but I don't know what I would do with myself if I couldn't have the writing-related thoughts that I have, even though something in there overdoes it a LOT at times. Makes the 30m bike trip to/from work less onerous (esp. when cold, raining and/or wildfire smog). It's the primary reason I broke out of MUDs into MUSHes and the like where the focus was more on who you were and what you did, rather than what you were statistically.

We still have tonic aisles around here, although they are fewer and further between than they were when I was young. When I was a kid I thought that tonic was storebrand soda cause that's what my dad bought and called it. And then soda was like, your Cokes and Pepsis.

And if I had known my husband called it 'pop' I never would've married him.

I've always been curious about what tonic water is like, myself, but Dad says he has a definite allergy to quinine, so that's nothing I want to experiment with, as to whether I inherited that allergy.

@Ganymede said in What MU/RPG opinions have you changed or maintained?:

@faraday said in What MU/RPG opinions have you changed or maintained?:

MUSH games are not very good about setting expectations of what kind of game they are, and players are not very good about respecting those boundaries even when they are established.

I concur, but write to add that most players are simply unwilling to learn the rules of a novel game, and would prefer to twist it to suit their attitudes rather than adapt.

If only I could keep this in the forefront of my head. I'm definitely guilty of this part. Someone recently compared it to tabletop gaming, and I'm like...... "Why did I never draw a parallel between these two?" as far as how I treat it. I definitely treat D&D differently than I have MU*ing, so that particular association was rather enlightening, in its way.

Now that I'm caught up to E6...

***=Spoilers through E6 and Book Spoilers***

      click to show

It's been interesting to watch how they deviate from the source material, but the scene with the Oath Rod irked me. Swearing a capital-O Oath as part of the terms of her exile was at best a taboo in the Tower, as the later books attested. Egwene was appalled by the idea when she discovered that had happened to Meidani and the other sisters that returned to Tar Valon under Elaida. Plus, it was practically unnecessary. Moiraine giving a vocal oath to obey the terms of her exile would have been upheld by the First Oath, as was heavily implied throughout the series, and would have been a worldbuilding moment where they could further extrapolate on how Aes Sedai are bound by the Three Oaths. It's not like sisters being exiled from Tar Valon was a new type of penance, per New Spring.

I wish they had gone with Myrelle over Alanna for the Green well acquainted with Moiraine. Myrelle was heavily implied to 'be with' her Warders, to say nothing about the gossip regarding her marrying them, so the threesome feels more believable if it had been her. Plus, the implications about Ebou Dari culture (from where Myrelle hailed) along with some of the things Myrelle says about men makes her a better fit.

I like how they give a little more screen time to Warder Things, though I was a bit ambivalent on how they handled Steppin (sp?) reacting to the bond backlash. That he was suicidal felt canonical, considering how multiple sisters comment or think on Warders "seeking death" if they survive their Aes Sedai. I do feel like they downplayed the backlash a bit though, making it seem less than it is in the books, which is the source of my ambivalence.

That little nod to the Forsaken had me trying to match names with figurines. I'm really curious how the showrunners will handle them.

All in all, I'm entertained, but having knowledge of the books is kind of trying at times, because I keep internally scoffing at some of the portrayals, such as the certainty I have that Lan and Moiraine would never have shared a bath. πŸ™‚

@Thenomain It's come up a couple times - I believe Sunny mentioned it originally. But regardless, my point isn't about length it's about the prevalent sentiment that it would inherently be boring and is "exactly the sort of scene that would mostly be glazed over in a book or a movie". (Which is not really my experience with books/movies either, but that's neither here nor there.)

Does anyone else have a near pathological need to rebel? To test limits of rules and taboo and everything else, like the proverbial red button that NEEDS to be pushed no matter how many times someone tells you not to? Testing the limits of work dress codes, how often to use which shortcuts. Just that subconscious need for a little anarchy.

Sort of? The thing I have found I do a lot, especially when stressed and/or frustrated, is that my mind will be writing these near screenplays where I am just angry ranting at people in charge in some sort of righteous outrage over <insert topic>. This happens even if I have absolutely no reason to talk to that person and they are not involved in the daily functions for my work area. I mean, we're talking sharp words at best. Nothing profane, just an extreme amount of indignation on my end.
