god I still quote bits of this show to myself all the goddamn time.

NO ONE AROUND ME IRL WOULD EVER GET THESE THINGS SO I JUST HAVE TO WHISPER THEM TO MYSELF.

I don't see Great British Baking Show on your list here so if you haven't watched it please do, it is so wholesome.

I THINK they now air, up to date, the Great British Baking Show on Netflix. I love it. It is the best 'cuddle up on the sofa with the kitties' show in the world IMO.

It also got me through my recent dental work (they have netflix in the patient rooms at my dentist).

THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS! I binge-watched all of these, then caught up on currents (new ones were airing every Friday, the season's final was last week), then dug out the Masterclass and Holiday 'side' shows (MC is Mary and Paul showing how to make some of the technicals right, and the holiday ones are bakers that didn't get Baker of the Week in different seasnos getting to come back and do holiday bakes for Baker of the Holidays or somesuch) and wow that show made me a little bit less despairing for humanity.

It also inspired me in a binge re-watching of The Mighty Boosh, if you groove on Noel Fielding and/or Julian Barratt. I found that on Hulu.

I know it's not reality tv but being on the subject of British media and all The Young Ones turned 35 years old today and it's streaming in various places on the web and could be a good option for blowing off steam.

The new Tool single (/title track), Fear Inoculum, dropped today.

(And holy shit that CD: 'Tri-fold Softpack Video Brochure featuring: CD (79 minutes of music), 4” HD rechargeable screen with exclusive video footage, charging cable, 2 watt speaker, 36 page book + MP3 code (89 minutes of music).'

This made me so happy in what has been a very, very trying month.

I'm super grateful I can stream their music finally, although I do own at least one copy of everything they've ever put out - and two of the Salival box set thanks to installing chatrooms on their website in the late 90s getting me a freebie I was way too poor to buy on my own and a sympathy card sent to Adam's then-wife when their dog died earning a second, SIGNED set (pause to squee here, as if I'd just gotten it anew). Definitely love the cover of 'You Lied' by Peach (Justin's first band) you can only find there.

I'm very happy with the new album and very happy TOOL as usual goes that extra mile to make fans want to purchase their hard copies. Working on their band sites, art sites and fanart sites made me really appreciate what a whole package they are, audio-visually and now I'll STFU with my fangirling and crawl back under my rock.

The realization that no matter what comes out of their mouth, some people are gonna lie over and over and over again and let you down.

      Bleargh.

My annoyance here is with myself in the end, that there are some people I can't stop giving a damn about despite the reality that they did this shit, are doing this shit, and no matter how many times they say it's going to be different, they're going to continue to do this shit, and I am all too aware of this.

This. This. This a million times. This a billion times.

Even when I finally do manage to exit, stage left (this has happened to me far more than once, unfortunately, and is a huge part of why I'm fairly solitary, even on the Internet) righteously angry and indignant and full of enough disgust to finally close the door? Time passes and my resolve weakens because I start forgetting how much being lied to constantly sucks, and how hurtful being gaslit over it is, and instead start missing the good times and traits that drew me into the friendship in the first place.

I'm not glad it's happening to someone else, but it's given me a second of relief to 'hear' someone else raging against this particular machine.

Thank you for sharing this peeve.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Jessica Jones S3? I'm debating if it is worth my time watching it or not.

I really, really enjoyed it and was far more satisfied with the ending than I expected them to be able to pull off. FWIW, I loved S1 and was lukewarm enough on S2 that I just barely watched S3 two or three days ago.

Tiny bit OT but I followed that up with Daredevil S3 and loved it, too, after snoozing my way through S2. Definitely far better storylines and writing IMO.

Good luck. I know it's hard. It will get better.

      This. This x2. This x1000000.

Just adding my bit here to what @Rinel said...a couple of years ago, my youngest (then 18) went for a week-long visit to some friends who live in an actual city a little under 400 miles from here. Cut to about ten days later when I get a random text from one of those friends who has no idea she's texting my daughter's mother (I'm under a Star Wars name in her contacts as a family joke) stating she'd been coded into a facility by police and emergency personnel, but was 'probably' going to be alright.

I spend an hour trying to get hold of the girl on my daughter's phone to no avail, until I threatened to SWAT them if I wasn't contacted in 30 minutes or less and included a screenshot of the GPS of where the phone I pay for was located.

Pathos ensues during which my husband, I, and three of her siblings basically have to long-distance torture these 'friends' to get something as simple as a fucking facility name out of them, which allowed us to find out the next day that yes, she was on a psychiatric hold. 400 miles away.

She was not okay. She very much needed to be there, it turned out, and the follow-up involved a lot of weirdness, a lot of conflict, a lot of drama, and a lot of guilt, some of which is still present. It also included a lot of on-again, off-again medication juggles, as is the norm for mental health, unfortunately, some of which created and compounded her conditions to the point of necessitating more hospitalizations, though never for more than a few days.

Fast forward to now, two going on three years later and said daughter has held a job down for a year, including promotions. She's got two semesters of college under her belt. She's kept a roof over her head (with roommates) this whole time and has pets she is responsible for, a boyfriend that she loves who loves her and as he has his own set of psychological baggage they are mutually supportive of each other's issues. She's gotten her driver's license in that time (we got her a beater and keep it insured - that, plus keeping her on the family phone plan are our only constant financial support at this time) and had no incidents with it.

After some bumps, we are as we were - very close.

I don't mean to overshare, it makes me irrationally irritated to see people sharing photos of every meal and requesting prayers for every hangnail but when it was happening to her, this situation terrified me and I'm offering the story up not to make it about me/us, but to maybe give you a tiny light toward the end of your tunnel.

I'm pulling for you and your family and have all the feels and best wishes for you in this crisis and that you get to look back to see it as a horrible thing that touched off positive changes for your family like it ended up being for us, and sooner, rather than later.

ETA: Maybe don't let your kids keep you as 'The Overlord' in their contacts, too. This apparently muddies things in crisis situations.

The movie "Rush" (2013, not 1991) chronicles his rivalry with fellow racer James Hunt as well as his vocal issues about F1 driver safety in the 70s.

I don't like to do it myself, at least not down to the exact same names and history, but the fact that more than just a couple of people in Haven almost religiously roll the EXACT same PCs back into every single iteration always kind of boggled my mind.

That said, many of the people who did just this were people I preferred not to engage with anyway (because of other things) and this helped mark who they were for ease of avoidance.

He was only 51! He was so young when his star shot up, this is a pretty solid loss for filmmaking. He could've easily had another 25-30 years in him. So sad.

    • RE: Sexuality: IC and OOC

@mietze said in Sexuality: IC and OOC:

Usually when I have heard pansexual being used by people actually think of themselves as that, it means that they are open attracted to all forms of gender identity (not just male/female) and genitalia.

I think a significant number of people who prefer the term bi for themselves would fall into that category, but not all. (Not everyone is attracted to nonbinary or trans people, who is attracted to cis men and women).

This is absolutely fair. I haven't had any kind of panic button engage when I've met and been attracted to trans people or people who might present one way one day or another another. My daughter said this is what gender fluidity is, I think, when I hit her up after Reno Pride last year.

That said, I apparently got super stupid hammered when three of my four were in high school and when I got to the 'I love you, man' phase of said drunken evening, had a heart-to-heart talk with the kids wherein I told them I didn't care if it was a rock they fell in love with, as long as they loved and were loved their families would be part of our overall larger family.

It seems like people sussing out a more liberal take in a PC's sexuality (bisexual, pansexual, anything other than ramrod straight or asexual, I suppose) assume that correlates with a more promiscuous take on relationships. This is absolutely not always the case, and I'm kind of mystified by that assumption, which I've seen enough (not always aimed my way, mind you) in games (and out, to be honest) to know it really is a 'thing'.

    • RE: Sexuality: IC and OOC

I'm a pretty 50/50 bisexual female and a vast majority of my PCs have been bisexual females. I just can't call it pansexual, I'm sorry, maybe I'm just too old but I accept an all-inclusive meaning and like how @Pandora explained it - attraction is about the person, not their genitalia, for me.

The one time I ever made a serious attempt to play a male PC, it came from the idea that maybe by doing so I could buy myself a break, some space, something. At the time, playing my female PC was claustrophobic and suffocating because of the way people were acting around her, to her, and about her, but seemingly never with her, if that makes any sense at all.

Within five minutes of stepping onto the grid, a pair of female PCs tried to waylay my middle-aged, wedding-ringed man into the forest with a really overdone sexy scantily clad damsels in distress scene that just... ugh. Within a week, multiple female PCs mine had interacted with in the same fashion as male PCs had staked 'claims' to my guy and were doing the same awful stuff to each other I watched them do to each other from my female PC. It was horrible. I'd thought it was bad to observe as a female, but it was a hundred times worse when it was AT me.

The apparently straight male PCs were actually really pleasant to him, as I saw no overt or possibly passive-aggressive signs of jealousy or the weird alpha posturing stuff some guys do in these games, and they'd always emote back at me, have conversations with me, buy rounds, roleplay poker, billiards, whatever... the whole building blocks to deeper IC trust and involvement.

I never met any gay or openly bisexual males that I'm aware of, i.e. no males ever made obvious passes or showed any iota of interest in him other than friendly dude joe bro type stuff. This was awesome. I got to see better writing and roleplay from quite a few of these guys than I ever got to see on any female PC I'd interacted with them on, which... actually, kind of sucked, in hindsight, but was really fun at the time.

Another time I rolled in an openly bisexual guy to help another player I respected try to get an organization off the ground and... well, that very same person more or less ignored me andmy once he'd figured it out, and I ended up shelving the PC over it. Never hit on him. Never came up ICly or OOCly in any conversations, but the mere act of making and playing a man who wasn't particularly traditionally masculine and with variable sexuality pretty much killed a friendship for me. That was pretty wrenching.

I never really figured out how to parse or process this. I still haven't. I guess this post is stupid long, but the intersectionality/mu*sectionality threads and debates really got me thinking about my experiences in this regard and since I'm following the threads I figured I'd share.
