See, when I was playing ME3, I got distracted by the multiplayer and basically just did that over and over again. I managed to get so much war score from it, though, and wound up sending through a bunch of Spectre agents due to leveling up to 20 with about 6 or 7 different characters. It was probably one of the only PUG multiplayers that I've enjoyed.

      You're so fucking weird.

Look, if you haven't seen Grunt falling through the Citadel, you haven't lived. Go back and play ME3.

And if you want to see the only opening worse than Up, go play The Last of Us.

I think the topic is very unironic on a thread regarding the forum’s interest in a dystopian game.

Niantec isn't really at fault and I don't see how anyone could possibly think they are.

It won't be. Cellphone companies have been sued before under a theory of negligence regarding drivers who were texting. Lower courts have tossed the cases out because: (1) it is not foreseeable to a cell phone company that a driver would text while driving; (2) there is no nexus between the allegedly-negligent act -- permitting a texting app/function -- and the accident, which is caused by a distracted driver; and (3) plenty of people use cellular phones reasonably and without harming anyone. If a plaintiff sued Niantec for damages after allegedly being injured by someone driving while playing Pokémon Go, I'm pretty sure that the suit would be tossed out for the same reasons.

We really need an alternative version of the it's ok that says "it's OK to like things, just don't be a dick about it". And then we need to force every motherfucking scotch drinker in the world to sit down and watch it for 17 hours straight in the (undoubtedly vain) hope that the message sinks in.

This reminded me of a comedian's bit where he excoriates people who demand open-mindedness.

"Have you ever had your dick crushed by a hammer?"
      "God, no."
      "You should try it."
      "Fuck, no."
"Well, if you're not going to keep an open mind -- !"

I also dislike scotch. Ugh. I like bourbon, though.

My point wasn't that you shouldn't consider others' opinions. Only that at some point I think it can become counter productive. That line's fluid, and changes regards go circumstances, with the caveat that at some point you're pretty much always in the wrong regardless of who your audience is, even if they cheer you on.

In my line of work, I have become mostly callous to: (1) others' opinions; and (2) always being in the wrong.

(Molly Ringwald wrote a while ago on watching Breakfast Club with her granddaughter and seeing herself being the target of all that adorable sexual assault by the guy she falls in love with at the end.)

      You mean Sixteen Candles, right?

Regarding why I believe there are more people from traditionally-oppressed minorities in the MUSH world is because it can give players a sense of control and power that they would not ordinarily have in the real world. I have heard stories of the violence some people have suffered because of who they are, and how they enjoy coming online to lose themselves because they can explore their thoughts, feelings, and preferences in relative safety. Being a very privileged person, I can only imagine how it might feel like to be living in a rural community in fear of your life because of who you are, only to find an outlet where no one knows who you are, where you live, and only really cares that you're there to play pretend with them.

I think it is wise to remember the power of playing fantasy. It may not mean that much to everyone, but I imagine it is very important to people who do not feel that they can truly express themselves in their lives. I enjoy playing characters with darker backgrounds or drives because my real life is very different than that. And while it is not real -- it's a simulation at best -- playing characters like Clarice and Piccola have given me the opportunity to research, explore, and consider closely the mental trauma I am lucky not to have.

He's a fucking poser. A liar. A total and absolute fraud. He's either never actually set foot in China or he's lying about the food he ate while in China.

      Yeah, this.

I'm actually Chinese. Cantonese, to be specific. It's bloody impossible here to find good Chinese food, but I live in Ohio. There's a joint in Cincinnati that's decent, and that's only because the chef is Cantonese, used to work in a Cantonese restaurant, and is basically a FOB. Also, he's pretty cool to talk to.

Most Chinese folk I know -- my parents, my relatives -- know where the good stuff is (in Toronto). But we understand that the Americanized-Chinese food is entirely its own, and treat it as such.

Plus, deep-frying anything and then dousing it in sauce is so stupid: you absolutely ruin the texture of the food when you do this.

Dear student who just moved to town for university. It appears you have come from a town that doesn't have crosswalks, so you don't know how to use them, so let me clue you in; You have the right of way in them, not 10 feet away from them when you are wearing black in the rain and walk right past it anyway.

I had a case where a man on a motorized wheelchair attempted to cross five lanes of traffic in the rain at night outside of a crosswalk. He crossed four of the five lanes, where vehicles had stopped for him, but in the last lane the motorist could not see him and killed him when she drove at the speed limit through her right-of-way.

There was a crosswalk forty feet away.

His estate sued the motorist, but the motorist won because it is illegal to cross such a road outside of a crosswalk. Furthermore, comparative negligence so substantially outweighed his argument that the motorist was granted summary judgment.

His estate was awarded zero damages.

Go to fucking crosswalks, people, for fuck's sake.

But I don't look at MU like home. It's only barely life. It's a pastime that I share with strangers, only a handful of whom are actually in what I would consider a friend circle, and therefore they get the same distance as every other stranger.

I see your point on this, I suppose, which is succinctly:

"MUSHing is a hobby in which I keep people at arms' length so I don't see any reason to give them any more consideration than I would a stranger I meet in court."

For me, though, it is because I don't know them that I feel compelled to be a little more cautious in my deportment. That is, I am more apt to watch what I say I do so as to not give unnecessary offense.

@faraday said in A healthy game culture:

No, my point was that certain systems and themes bring out the worst in people and can contribute to a toxic game culture. Which I think is the same point you're making?

Then I clearly misunderstood; thank you for clarifying.

My point, succinctly, is that Vampire is a toxic game. Knowing this, it is important to go above and beyond in order to tamp it down and make it playable as a MUSH. Requiem for Kingsmouth is an excellent example, where the game was enjoyable for most but it required almost-unprecedented levels of staff involvement and restriction, all of which likely contributed to its shutdown.

So, if RfK is the level of supervision and maintenance necessary to make the system and setting "work," then the system and setting are the culprits for the failure of games based on it.
