    • RE: How To Treat Your Players Right

I should also note that most mushes use the default telnet port and don't use SSL.

Default telnet sends the packets from your PC (username, password, pages, TS scenes, etc) in cleartext through the default telnet port to the MU, making any information contained easily read by sniffing programs, spyware, etc. Even if you use a port other than default, telnet by itself is an insecure, cleartext protocol.

So unless a game is utilizing SSL connectivity (which encrypts the transmission rather than sending it in cleartext), you should also be aware that there is a risk when typing sensitive information sent to a mush on the client-side.

Like...if I weren't a musher and someone in my house was, I could theoretically set up a sniffer to monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic on TCP port 23 and just read what's getting sent through my router to any mush activity in my household.

tl;dr I highly suggest a mush culture migration to adopting SSL as standard.

ETA: This is in topic with the privacy talk the last few posts in this thread, as well as a suggestion as to how to take care of your players. Giving them access to SSL as an option treats them well.

      @faraday With you 100%.

Without logs, and word of mouth tells you that a player is complaining about it, and then when you ask that player they do not corroborate the complaint, then the correct action is to do nothing.

The only way to be fair and ensure that you are making the right decision is to place the burden of proof onto the accuser. This is a text based hobby. Log that stuff.

It might upset people, sure, but I agree with how you handled it 100% and would appreciate that sort of staff candor and neutrality if someone were accusing me, guilty or not.

Corporate HR guidelines are actually pretty solid for this.

      • Ask the person to stop the behavior. If you feel it is important, record/log the conversation and report it to manager/HR
      • Management/HR may intervene as they see fit, but recording it with them or that the conversation taking place sort of immediately protects you from retaliation.
      • If it persists, log it and make it explicit that you have asked the behavior to stop and request staff/mgr intervention.

It's a text-based medium. You can log your request for them to stop and leave you alone. You can even be up front and say "You're making me uncomfortable, please stop paging me, and I would like to avoid non-group roleplay with you."

Ya don't need to let staff see the log, but I've done this before and dropped a line to staff that I've had the conversation and would be submitting log/formalizing the issue if it didn't stop.

    • RE: Modiphius Games

      Hrm.

I think it could be done. One major aspect to the 2d20 Modiphius system is the interplay between GM and Player. IIRC it's called "escalation" or some other word in that general wheelhouse.

There's a system for Pcs and GMs trading off bennies/negative tokens to tug-of-war the scenes. A few ground rules on GMing should make that work well.

Otherwise? It's a gaming system for dice rolling. Ships are statted nicely and theres a lot of online support/modules/info for it.

Yeah, ship combat (as well as the whole of the Modiphius system) is more designed to mimic what you see on the Star Trek shows.

So it's less "calculate the right percentage of impulse power to navigate the debris" and more "Tom Paris knows his stuff. He rolls and navigates the debris field".

I reaaaally like this system for creating walk-on characters. Basically, it's got this side system with character sheets that contain about 1/4 of the information of a regular character sheet. Need a "Redshirt"? In 30 seconds you jot down stats and a name. If the redshirt didn't die and you want him again on an away mission vs the Borg? Hang onto the "Supporting Cast Member" sheet and put him into play.

This system works nicely for when your character is a pilot circling the away team's area, but you still want to partake in the combat if the PCs split up the party.

@Ganymede Yeah, I bought in on it. I like it. It's bot a super crunchy game system, very RP driven, lots of content, stuff like creating cameo characters.

My kit came with the core book, dice, a GM screen, and maps of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

I like it leaps and bounds more than the last iteration of Trek RPGs

It's definitely a thing. There are instances of stuntpersons/body doubles upset that they either didn't get the job because their skin wasn't a close enough shade match to the actor they were doubling, or because they were asked to wear makeup to help match the shade.
