Also, that the author was pretty new really explains the other minor thing I found kinda cheesy, how pretty much all of the on-screen recurring characters have a romantic pairing or two. It felt so Young Adult Novel, haha!

It's my biggest peeve with the books. She paired up literally everyone, it felt a bit like reading a shipping fanfic.

Isn't that example -- totally in support of theme having the potential to encourage certain types of bad behavior? If your game is about kittens competing to be top cat, it is a similar thing people have talked about in regards to themes that are explicitly designed to be competitive bringing out competitive streaks in the players.

I suppose it depends on what you call a theme. I tend to think of themes as aesthetics. I certainly agree with the idea that games that encourage player on player conflict will cause more issues all things being equal. You need to actively work against people getting over-invested and harass other players for in-game benefits in a way you don't in a cooperative game. Not to mention the ways a PvP game gives predatory players a way to leverage other players OOCly with threats to their character.

For proof that systems can bring the worst out of people, I don't think you have to look any further then the MOBA genre. People quickly get very degenerate when they feel someone else is responsible for them losing in a competitive environment. At the same time, there's countless of competitive environments out there (like most sports) where people get along just fine which I think illustrates how important community/culture/sportsmanship is.

I'm not convinced theme has a direct correlation with poor behavior. If you made a game about kittens where they're all constantly fighting to be the top cat, you'd probably get most of the same issues you see with running Vampire.

This is a valid point. Out of those last five or six versions, only the most recent was 3e. And it closed shortly after Dragonblooded Kickstarter manuscript came out - not even the final copy. So NEW THINGS may mean new player approaches. There's also the folks who WILL play other things for the niche RP aspects. But it still ends up being like 20-30 Solars, 15 Infernals, 10 Abyssals, 15 Lunars, 6 Alchemicals, 4 Sidereals, 2 Dragonblooded, 1-3 Raksha, and maybe some god/fae/ghost blooded, if folks are feeling FANCY. Those aren't the ACTIVE numbers. Those are the TOTAL numbers.

I usually see more DBs then Sidereals but other then that those ratios more or less match up with my experience. Before Infernals were released, Lunars used to be slightly more popular.

Though I think it's worth pointing out that a lot of the unpopularity of Alchemicals, Sidereals and Raksha is that they're weird and play weird with the latter two having somewhat broken rules to boot.

Solars, Lunars and DBs are all pretty straightforward and the popularity of DBs is always going to depend on how much emphasis the game puts on them. They're plenty popular on games where the focus is on a dragonblooded city state where they get to flex their full social benefits. In games set in the middle of nowhere they tend to be unpopular because without an empire behind them they can easily feel like 'the weak' exalt.

My only concern is that since they never posted it's hard to tell if it was actually Az's account but then again, since they never posted losing the account isn't a great unfairness.

I think keeping these people off the forum is beneficial since we know in the past people have abused forum PM's to stalk and harass people.

Historically Abyssals have been one of the least popular playable splats. In large part because Abyssals have just been worse Solars, all the flexibility of Solars got traded into becoming more goth, murder and death none of which is particularly useful. Nothing stops a Solar from dressing in bones and black while they recite bad poetry.

Regardless I think the only ones who have third edition books are Solars, Lunars and DBs?

@warma-sheen I hear you and I hope to be able to get it done right.. I'm prepared to fail, if it doesn't work out the way I hope.

I agree with you regarding where the fun starts or stops. Exalted is a character driven game (imho), and failure is and SHOULD be on the table even for powerful exalts.

Losing is a huge part of character growth, I feel, so. I should hope my players expect to win some, lose some and write some great stories in the process.

As I've never run a game before, I'm excited to give it a try all the same.

If you're playing Exalted and winning all the time, then why are you playing Exalted?

Like, I get it. Solars are the exemplary best at everything -- that's their thing, excellence -- but that excellence can only come to real light when challenged; if you never find something you actually need to overcome, you're really just a bully. And yes, Solars eventually all basically become bullies, but the point of the game is before, not after!

Thematically Exalted in general and Solar exalted in particular has never been a game where the player characters are expected to face great difficulty in their area of expertise. Rather it's about exploring the consequences of power.

You'll have no problem dealing with the local god, monster or corrupt official but will that improve the lives of the locals or will you bring unintended consequences upon their heads?

      Matter of opinion there...

I don't believe you can take a core character concept away from a character and still consider it to be good. Fox Studios believed a superhero wasn't much more than their powers and that's (one of a few reasons) why their superhero franchises failed and continue to fail, especially versus other Marvel titles.

Sometimes height has nothing to do with a character. But sometimes it really does. I don't know enough about She-Hulk to know whether it applies, but I trust the Disney Marvel people to keep the core of her character intact and handle it appropriately.

I think staying true to the character is a lot less important then making a good movie. Most people know absolutely nothing about She-hulk just like they knew absolutely nothing about Iron-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy.

Where Marvel has gone the extra mile is that they're attempting to ensure that the movies remain consistent and coherent with each other so that if you enjoy one of them chances are good you'll enjoy the others too without jarring breaks in continuity or style. You can tell that there's someone with an overarching vision for the franchise.

Fox by contrast created a number of individually decent movies that had almost nothing to do with each other.

      reclaiming

Doesn't that make it more of a claim then a reclaim? I'm a big fan of this kind of 'cultural appropriation', a good story is a good story and is often made more interesting when retold through the lens of entirely different experiences.

Do you find it relaxing? I am not a delicate handed person in the slightest. I worry I will ruin the miniature within .02 seconds of having it and the paints out. I like the gold accents on the last one!

I find it relaxing in an exhausting kind of way. It's really calm to be hyper focused on one brushstroke at a time but it strains my eyes after a while so I can only paint one model at a time before needing to rest.

I don't find myself worrying about ruining the miniature because there's always a number of ways to fix a mistake.

      1. If you're quick enough you can use a clean brush to soak up all the stray paint from the miniature.
      2. Most paint errors can just be painted over with more paint. (Just make sure you're thinning your paints so the model doesn't turn into clayface)
      3. Most areas of the model which are hard to paint cleanly are usually invisible to casual observation.

If you look closely at my models you'll see the individual brushstrokes are awful but it's hard to notice unless you're looking for it.

Looks like a good start! Quite the challenge you've taken on to do a mainly white colour scheme, notoriously fickle to paint.

Since I'm using a white primer, I'm actually finding it's the dark colors that give me trouble most of the time. Though I think hardest thing by far is trying to make the face and hair look good.

Took a stab at painting a Repentia today:
