      Story Time:

I was in a Starbucks when a lady started breast feeding her kid, and an older guy got all bent out of shape over it and asked the barista to tell her to stop, and the woman behind the counter told him if he had a problem with her feeding her baby he could go wait in the bathroom until she was done.

A good laugh was had by most present, but it did draw even more attention to her, and she got kind of flustered and said something like "Okay, everybody can stop staring at my breast now." and the same barista told her that if she had a problem with people looking at her bare breasts, she could go bare it in the bathroom until she was done.

I put a tip in the jar and I wasn't even there to buy anything, just waiting for a friend, because that was fantastic.

I know this has come up before, but...

LONG AGO IN THE DARK SPACES BETWEEN TIMES, WHEN ALL WERE FORCED TO BOW BEFORE THE YOKE OF TINYFUGE OR SOME VARIANT OF THE SAME, WELL BEFORE THAT PRACTICE BELONGED ONLY TO THE ARCHAIC THENO-PRIESTS OF THE MODERN WORLD...

I was engaging in a fully explicit bit of what I can't really call TS, because it wasn't really posing so much as me writing several pages of smut to send to a friend who was at work, half to mess with her and half because I was 17 and what else was I going to be doing. It was... I don't know, a few pages long or so, in terminal text. Excessively large. Less a pose than a borderline BDSM short story.

Due to a world collapse with TF I sent the whole thing into a giant player/staff meeting on Texas Twilight, with a few dozen people present to discuss some big ridiculous game-thing, all very srs bsns.

Bammo. Giant doompose of fuckery. And since at the time I basically used variations on the same name (different character object names, frequently, but the same IC 'real name'), it was entirely obvious it was me.

      Good times. >_>

Sure, staff hates babysitting, but if it's legit harassment, we'll deal with it.

I'm pretty sure I heard that if it's legitimate harassment that a MU*ers charobject has ways of protecting itself.

On the flip side of this, I will also tell you that you're being a whiny baby, and what this person is doing is not harassment, it's legitimate social interaction and seriously stop feeling so entitled

Can't make you miserable or otherwise just be a pain in the ass to deal with, without actually violating any rules or doing anything 'legitimately' harassing. Do we have a sarcasm emoticon yet? Meh.

There's plenty of methods of communication available on a MU*, from channels to pages. I don't really feel as if anybody especially needs to be able to see exactly where I am or who I'm with via +who/+where. If they want to RP with me, they can let me know and we'll figure something out. If they want to RP in public, they can use channels or page folks or other tools. Most games I've been on have +hangouts code that show public spaces and how many people are there, regardless if any of the individuals involved are Unfindable or not.

Given the amount of high school level gossip that goes on about who's RPing with whom, whether they're in public or alone in a room (which always 100% of the time means TS, obvs), blah blah blah, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything being Unfindable all the time. Any game that thinks me being Unfindable is somehow a problem that needs fixing can go fuck itself.

I've grown far less tolerant. Maybe just in movie theaters. I will not hesitate to notify ushers, security, management, whoever is supposed to get notified about disruptions, if someone's kid is being a disruption for more than a short period. Or repeatedly over numerous short periods.

Is their kid disabled? Perfectly abled but still a little monster? On medication that makes them irritable? I do not give a fuck, get out.

Oh, also libraries. If you can't stop your kid from screaming non-stop, get the fuck out.

I put up with noisy ass kids in restaurants, malls, grocery stores, on the train, in the park, all over the place. I game with friends who have four kids ranging between 8 and 1, and aside from the occasional physically painful shriek, I don't bat an eyelash at them being little monsters, but if they brought them to a movie theater and those kids couldn't control themselves? I'd have their asses out in a heartbeat.

Which they know, and so they don't take their kids if it'll be a problem. If that means they just don't go to movies if they can't make arrangements, then it does. And yeah, it sucks for them, but too bad. They chose to be parents, not the rest of us,. There's other places, other ways, you can go out and get your public on where people will feel obligated to put up with poorly behaved (for whatever reason) children. The movie theater isn't one of those places.

      @Sunny

It is actually harassment, the pages y'all are talking about. It's not a MASSIVE case of harassment, and not something I'd kick someone off a game for without repeated offenses. It's still enough of one that I'd want to sit someone down and say 'hey, just so you know, this actually isn't okay'.

I love you, I understand why you think this is the case, but no.

To me, this speaks to the bigger social idea that everyone needs to just be nice to each other, and that not being nice should get you put in the naughty corner.

People aren't always nice. They talk shit, they make inappropriate jokes, sometimes they're offensive (sometimes without meaning it, sometimes because in that moment they're an asshole), etc. Pulling them aside to shake a finger at them for not being nice generally do shit. Sure, sometimes it'll ignite a lightbulb and they'll come to an epiphany, but sometimes it'll aggravate the situation and turn some snarky offhand bullshit into actual nastiness. Most of the time they'll just nod their heads and make gestures indicating agreement, and move on. Because what the fuck, really?

"Hey, we've heard you were having a private conversation with some friends and speculating about whether Bob is ICly screwing Tammy and we need you to... stop speculating about stuff in your private conversations, because we heard from Jeff who heard from Joe who hears from Tom who heard from Mindy who heard from Michaela that you said it. Well, no, not specifically what you said but the general... just stop that."

Sure, they'll get right on that.

People are flawed, imperfect creatures, and while staff can and should draw a line in the sand about unacceptable behaviors, try to manage that shit on that level ( a level I can avoid 90% of by setting myself Unfindable ) or try to classify it as 'harassment', and you're going to create a full time job for yourself handling it, and it still won't stop anyone from doing those things.

I find the idea of going to staff about that sort of thing pretty abhorrent, really, and I'm someone who's dealt with more than my fair share of exactly that sort of bullshit. And I'm totally aware that people like Spider use exactly that sort of back-channel muttering to create the whisper campaigns she uses to get at people she doesn't like. Recognizing when that shit is getting out of hand and crossing a line, banning assholes like Spider, sure. Arbitrary staff decision because reasons, do it. Doooo it. But trying to stop the high school style whispering that is pervasive across basically every social endeavor humans put together than involves more than two people? Hah, no.

Stupid, petty bullshit is called petty for a reason, and this illusion that we can or even should aspire to a life of sweetness and light where everybody is always nice to each other is both unrealistic and undesirable, at least to me.

    • Reports of my demise have been blah blah blah.

Since I've had people poking me via other media to make sure I'm okay, with various theories on what might have happened, I figured I'd drop in long enough to clarify:

      • I am not dead, obviously.
      • I was not divorced by @ES and summarily banned.
      • I am not posting under a secret alias.
      • I have not lost internet connection.
      • I did not lose my hands in a horrible industrial accident.
      • I am not in a dome stress testing for life on Mars.
      • I have not lost myself in Hello Kitty Online.

So on and so forth. I'm fine, I'm just not reading or posting here, aside from making this post. I regret that I won't be following up to savor the various shades of don't really give a fuck to follow. You gave enough of a fuck to click on the thread title, so my ego is secure.

Since just saying "I'm not reading/posting anymore." hasn't been enough to stop people from nagging me, I'll include here what I've said elsewhere:

I enjoyed the board (by which I collectively mean the string of boards this general community has inhabited going way back, whatever its name) most when it was a bunch of assholes and bullies being more or less comfortable with being and dealing with assholes and bullies, and it was a venue to vent about how fucking stupid people can be, and how terrible both their roleplay and their life choices often were. It was filthy and pretty vile, but also quite cathartic.

I enjoyed the more serious conversations that grew out of it, because generally people said whatever the fuck they wanted to say without much regard for what other people would think of it, both in terms of the ideas put forward and the often brutal criticism that came out of it. Again, assholes and bullies, but again that was a feature not a bug. Nobody really worried about hurting anybody else's feelings, because if their feelings were going to get hurt over some shit said on an internet forum for and by assholes and bullies, they probably knew they shouldn't be here anyway.

Soapbox isn't really that place, though. Which, again, is fine. It doesn't have to be. But it's what I wanted, what I enjoyed, and seeing it steadily replaced by a more standard forum with a growing community of finger-shakers and tsk-tsk-tsk types doesn't really sit well with me. I didn't read WORA to have people worry about my feelings before they posted, I wanted them to post whatever the fuck they wanted to and to trust that I was enough of an adult not to go kill myself over it, and vice versa.

The fact that right now there's probably half a dozen people immediately thinking about posting with righteous indignation about how cyber-bullying and suicide are never funny and how dare I only really illustrates why I lost interest in posting here.

None of which is meant to suggest that the community here, despite what assholes remain, isn't probably better off for the shift. I'm sure plenty of folks are much happier and more willing to post with the trend of mockery and ridicule and outright insult over their ideas getting more and more pressure to shut the fuck up. No sarcasm is intended there, either. It's just gotten to be a pretty far departure from my expectations and interests.

I'm not trying to call out @Glitch in particular, but when he posted that there was a place here for Play-By-Post subforums and shit, it sort of cemented that disinterest. Whatever we're calling it now, this board came up as a place to house the community that existed on WORA when it went down the last time, and the very idea of encouraging folks to PbP on a board used even in part for making fun of people's RP seems pretty fucking antithetical.

As of a bit ago nobody was actually using it, mind, but that it even came up as a thing (and was given the thumbs up in post by folks as a good idea in the past) cemented my impression that this isn't really the place for what I wanted. Inevitably somebody will bumble through using it, maybe to wet their toes in RP, and when somebody makes fun of them for it somebody else will cluck their tongue and post disapprovingly about discouraging folks from trying and first times and blah blah blah. Which is a pretty legit response, but again, the fact it'd even come up in the first place is just... meh.

I'm okay with making fun of people's RP (even my own), and I like tasteless, even vile humor, and I enjoyed interacting with folks in an environment where mostly nobody worried about anybody else's feelings and censored their shit accordingly, or got on anybody else's case to do the same.

I'm not trying to condemn Soapbox, or the community. All in all I think things have had a pretty positive upswing for most folks, even if not for me.

So, there you go. I'm not going to pull any dramatic 'NEVER AGAIN!' nonsense, but I probably won't be back any time soon. There's officially no need to poke me on facebook or skype or whatever to ask me if something's wrong, or if I'm mad at somebody, or blah blah blah. Not that you can't poke me, I'm still social, I'm just not posting here.

      Laters.

I don't really bat an eyelash at the idea of using internet sites to hook up for anonymous sex with a random stranger, but that cuddling thing just creeps me out deep into my bones, full on physical shudders even.

I've had completely meaningless sex without a trace of intimacy, but I don't believe I've ever cuddled with someone who wasn't already a close friend or family, or suffering hypothermia.

...I would just ban all of these motherfuckers, on the face of it here. >_>

Unfortunately, even as Ashur, I did not have the authority to kick people off the game permanently.

Too bad, because yeah, all of them.

Troy had already been run over by the staffers prone to frothing fits. Once she decides how something is going to be handled and who has to do it, that is pretty much that.

Sure, I just feel like when this comes up there's a lot of hand wringing about how nobody on staff was willing to deal with it, and rules had to be made so that staff wouldn't be forced to deal with it, and that's simply not the case. There's stuff I don't like, stuff I'm not comfortable with, but at the end of the day it's all fictional shit that's not actually happening to anyone, and at worst I'm going to find it one of the many moderately unpleasant things I might have to do as staff. Given how moderately unpleasant I felt dealing with maybe half of the other people on staff, because there were some really, really stupid people I was forced to deal with... enh.

I'll take adjucating damage levels on a torn anus over having to work with a good dozen staffers I dealt with there any day of the week. Not you, mind. I think I was mean to you a few times here, but only because you were the mouthpiece for shitty decisions. I always felt like you tried your best to do what you could with what you were given, which is more than I can say for some of those assholes.

You seem to be a lot less susceptible to people whining and crying and having fits then Troy or I though.

I offered a couple of times to be the hardass, but it never flew. Probably because I'd have required the authority to actually follow through with whatever I decided. <_<
