    • RE: Forgiveness in Mushing

It's kind of an interesting thought.

I mean, we're not talking about depriving people of their fundamental liberties, here. I agree that the backbiting and Mean Girlsing that can happen in a MU* can be overblown and excessive, and the fights get nasty when the stakes are small.

But we're talking about what I do to waste my free time playing pretendyfun elfgames. If someone's made the experience actively unpleasant for me before, I'm certainly under no obligation to let bygones be bygones and walk into the same situation that turned my funtimes into a dramatic headache in the past.

And frankly... well, @Aria will tell you that I don't usually get worked up about much of anything, never mind game stuff. Anyone who does appear on what passes for my shitlist has probably pulled the "I'm doing better now" thing enough for it to go past "fool me twice, shame on me" and into "oh shut up silly woman said the reptile with a grin,/ you knew damn well I was a snake before you let me in."

The substance of my question is "are you joking, or just stupid?" I feel like I may need to workshop it a bit.

The bias I've seen in MU* dom against women playing men is interesting to me. My non-MU* RP history has basically consisted of most of my RP acquaintances saying "lol dude why do you keep making female characters are you gay or something."

Most MUSHes have (or have had) a majority female playerbase. Most in-person RP is (or has been) a majority male playerbase. Neither of these are 100% true and I think the latter, at least, has been changing for a while, but still.

@Aria and I both did some of our earliest online RP on a predominantly male space (the White Wolf hosted javachat games), and those were majority male, so the crossgender RP sterotype was a dude playing a lesbian in a leather body suit with tits out to here. (This was when you still got 'there are no women on the internet' jokes.) Then I went onto MU* gaming and the steriotype was a woman playing a waifish yaoi twink.

Like, sorry for double post, but to clarify, my point was more that manic pixie dreamgirl is one of those tropes that is definitely popularized based on its relevance to MEN, and I don't doubt that dudes playing lesbians often think they are being "chic" about this, but I've seen female players fall into the same trap. I think the extensive appearance of the trope in all forms of media contributes to that a great deal. People thinking that it's a "right" way to play a woman because that's how they seem women portrayed all over the place -- even people who should know better.

...is it awful that one of the concepts that's been bouncing in my head for a while is an Acanthus Manic Pixie Nightmare Girl? Like, a free spirit who barges into people's lives, does her best to convince them to ignore things like 'oblgations' or 'property rights' until she gets it into her head to fuck off and leave them stranded three states from home with an empty bank account and a court date?

Co-workers! I'm sorry you're on the outs with your respective significant others, but additionally, I don't actually care! Please hold off the loud arguments until you're on your own time!

Boss' boss! I'd really like to know, when you ask for "feedback" on the new decision, if you're actually looking for feedback or if you're just looking for us all to tongue your asshole about what a great idea this is. My answers would be dramatically different depending.

@Tinuviel Yes, yes, cultural zeitgeists don't match up perfectly with the tens digit of our arbitrary measurements of time. I'm still not going to dignify "nineteen ninety-one was in the eighties" with a rebuttal.

      DEAR ASSOCIATE:

If you're actually sick this often, you should probably go to a doctor; it's concerning. However, since you always seem to be getting sick either the day before or after one of your days off, I might suspect that you're just a lazy malingering asshole who expects other people to pick up the slack or stay late whenever you're not feeling like working. (And since you're a 21-y-o kid who lives in your mom's house, I genuinely suspect you might not be aware that "job" means "you have to go even if you're not feeling it.")

@bored said in Separating Art From Artist:

      @Kestrel
That argument easily reduces to 'don't become an activist if you're concerned about having a livelihood.' Is that really the stance you want to take? Like... do you not get that you're basically arguing for your own suppression? I don't get it. Most of these things (like the employment contract issue that you didn't respond on) are far more effective as tools of oppression than they are as tools of activism. Twitter shit just gives people a false sense of bravado.

You don't get to use the "my personal views are my own business" thing as regards someone who goes out on the street in public for the specific purpose of airing those views to literally everybody who can hear or see them.

The whole point of activism is to tie oneself to those views, loudly and publicly. That's almost literally the definition. Yes, that means accepting the consequences of that, because you cannot both make yourself a public advocate of a position and claim that the position should have no impact on your public life.

("Oh, but you'd be complaining if a gay rights advocate was fired because their company didn't want the association with gay rights advocacy, while you're fine if a white supremacy advocate gets the boot!" Well, yes, because even if we assume a spherical goat situation where all concepts must be considered to hold equal value, supporting gay rights is good and supporting white supremacy is bad. And I have the right to tell people that the company who fires people for supporting gay rights is bad and I won't buy shit from them/their advertisers, while the company that fires Nazis is good and I will buy shit from them and their advertisers.)

@Auspice Again, I'm not condoning or advocating for the cowards who hide behind internet anonymity to threaten people en masse, or people who direct others to do so on their behalf.

But when the sweaty Charlottesville guy complains that his professional life took a hit when his screaming face was over the world in all its tiki-torch-and-polo glory, I find myself profoundly lacking in sympathy.

I understand that you really, really want the answer to "why are your sales down" be some failure of communication or process, so that we can set up an ambitious action plan to Turn Things Around with your know-how and inspiring leadership.

But no matter how much you don't want to hear it, sales are down because foot traffic is zero and there's nobody in the goddamn store.

Even I can't sell to figments of my own imagination.

      Probably the most.

When asked by a noted art scholar the appropriate distance from which to stand when viewing his magnum opus, plainly entitled ‘loss,’ Tim Buckley famously responded, 'What? Fuck you,’ and banned me from his forum.

So long as we understand what normal people consider to be an acceptable definition, why does it matter that unreasonable people will attempt to subvert its meaning?

I'm not convinced that we do know what normal people consider to be an acceptable definition. Language is use; no matter how snooty I am about how everybody but me is using "begs the question" wrong, it doesn't actually matter in terms of communicating.

So if "white knighting" keeps getting used to mean "anyone objecting to discrimination against subaltern groups they aren't in," and that's what it's understood to mean, that's what it means.

Maybe I'm wrong and it hasn't gotten to that point. I'm skeptical.
