    • RE: General Video Game Thread

      So my preliminary impressions on Jedi - Fallen Order:

      It plays like the most recent entries into the Tomb Raider franchise complete with the jankiness that comes from those games in terms of character movement and controls. They feel like they are too loose and not as precise as they should be in for movement and actions like jumping and leaping. Another good comparison would be Uncharted but I think that game had smoother movement/action controls and animation than this does.

      They sprinkle a bit of Dark Souls in with the boss fights, which makes them really not all that inspired and as the game progresses they add difficulty by making the enemies bullet-spongy, so they take more hits to knockdown. More memorable boss fights were had, in my opinion, with past entries like Jedi: Outcast and the Force Unleashed.

      Lightsaber combat is pretty polished though and is one of the areas that seems smooth in terms of animation and how the character moves. It is one of the best highlights of the game. Integrating other force powers into your actions seems clunky at first - or I should say, not intuitive, but once you get used to it, it ceases to be all that noticeable.

      The sound design is well done and aside from the occasional uncanny valley look other human characters get during cut scenes - the game hits the notes graphically of Star Wars very well.

      Overall, it is fun to play and you can get lost in the atmosphere once you get used to the character movement and controls. Might be worth full price if you can't wait to have the game, otherwise, I'd say give it time to drop about $20.

      ETA: I think it should also be noted that the main character, Cal, is Mocapped and voiced by Cameron Monaghan, who played Jerome in Gotham. If you are familiar with the show there will be times where his distinctive voice style comes through pretty heavily and you might have Gotham flashbacks.

      I have not seen much said about it here, but for you sci-fi buffs who liked movies like Moon and 2001, Ad Astra is a pretty decent movie that also has a great character-focused story.

      TLOU2 got delayed as well. I am wondering if everyone is trying to get a bit of extra shine with some of the new console talk coming out so that they can platform to those when they go on sale.

      @Apollonius

      Every creature has its own method to combat it. In my opinion it is absolutely necessary in the game to learn when to dodge, roll, parry, or counterattack - and on which creatures those kinds of defenses are most useful. The game gets a lot easier once you get this experience. If you have any other questions Apollonius just drop them here or message me. I don't mind getting more in-depth into creature combat strategies to help you out if you need it.

      I have all three Gothic games and thought they were really good, though with varying overall quality. I definitely agree that you'd lose a lot of the game's flavor if you modeled it too much after Witcher 3 or Skyrim, or the like.

      I Am Not Okay With This, a new half-hour long 7-episode binge on Netflix is pretty decent. It's rather charming and has some good wit to it.

      Auspice had it right. It really depends on the game. Some games are best with KB/M. Some are better or easier to play with controllers.

      I determine usage based on if the game is a port or not. Some games are still best utilized for controller after porting, for example, Valkyria Chronicles was that way for me.

      Others are still best with KB/M; like I'm playing Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord and that would just be terrible with a controller.

      Sometimes using both to try out a game is also a good option, it lets you find what fits right for you based on how the game plays and how you play it, feels.

      Tales from the Borderlands, Episode 1 is free on consoles right now. Or you can buy all four episodes for less than $10 on Steam. Worth picking up if you're a Borderlands fan.

      Based on @darksabrz remark and the place on @Sundown 's list I grabbed Brick and just finished watching it. It was real hard to remember that movie was using high school age kids for a noir. But it was very well done. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The music fit, the cast did a great job - fuck that was a great movie.

      The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing Final Cut is free to anyone who owns the trilogy already. If you own only 1 and 2, it is more cost expedient to buy the third and then get Final Cut for free - which can be done until at least the 10th.

      Well about half of the ones on your list I already have on DVD or have seen before. Brick was the stand out that I hadn't when I was checking at IMDB to get a sense of what I might like.

      @Insomnia

      Ah sorry. Yes it's a Steam thing. You have to have all three games in Steam. And in the News Section on the Store page for any of the three games, you can scroll down to a section titled Recent Updates. And in big white letters there Van Helsing: Final Cut Is Free etc etc. From there you'd click Read More and there's a link to the website where you log in with your Steam account and get your code for Final Cut.

      As a publisher they do have a wide catalog of great games that have come out. And they don't seem like the type of publisher that does some of the more shady things like EA - pushing dev teams to hurry through products just to get it out. By all perceived impressions they value the developers who they publish for and value the games they put out.

      And it is the dev teams they have access to that gives me interest. Can you imagine what a game might turn out if they handed some of the development of a new game over to Obsidian Entertainment or Taleworlds. The possibilities.

      The Expanse.

      It's still a bit early to tell but so far I'm rather enjoying it. It feels very old school science fiction, hearkening back to the days of Asimov and Heinlein.

      It is a smart sci-fi show. Which gives me the impression that SeeFee will cancel it after a season and a half.

      I think they pushed Defiance out three seasons though because they tied it to the MMO game and hoped that it would have kicked off better than it did.
