@Arkandel I will pose a question to you then. If you aren't willing to have outside sources influence and change your character (for better or worse)... then why play an interactive non-consent game where other people have the ability to influence and change your character? If you'll only ever accept certain outcomes (and tailor your RP so you only ever see those outcomes), then what are you actually adding to the game and why should anyone want to play with you?

The former attitude is really no different from the latter attitude. Both presume that everyone else is on the game merely to help you achieve your goals and anyone that isn't there to help you isn't worth the time. That kind of entitled attitude is what leads the former to become the latter. And that does happen, more often than I think you're allowing for. There's a reason staff take complaints about people exhibiting 'problem behavior' and not just for outright cheating or ignoring rules. A single player's poor behavior or attitude can be just as destructive to a game as any cheater.

I don't think I've ever seen Staff get asked to mediate a social conflict as it happened. The way it goes down in my experience is that the scene breaks down, everyone goes home and later Staff gets to find a unique complaint from each participant when they log in to check their job queue.

Do you want massive timestops and retcons? Because this is how you get massive timestops and retcons. 😉

@Arkandel I'll call bullshit on that. If you're only ever participating in scenes where everything goes how you want it to go... that's really no different than ignoring the things you don't like just because you don't like them. Accept that bad shit will probably happen to your character and you will not be able to stop it. Stop trying to cater to the 'sensitive' people that can't handle having things beyond their control happen. I don't want to take 4 agg from the nasty Gangrel that I'm in combat against... its not going to be super fun, I'll hate it... but I'll do it because that's how the game works.

@Arkandel That's the honor system, and let me know when you've had a game of more than 10 people where the honor system actually worked. There's no checks and balances in your example, no way to ensure that people are actually posing according to the results of the roll.

@Lisse24 I just think the social system is terrible as it stands. It was never meant to be used against PC's, or in a MU*, and there is no way in Hell that I am keeping track of every social interaction I have with every PC across weeks or months, trying to figure out if they've opened enough Doors to influence my character. I have better things to do with my time and quite frankly, tracking all that crap is like a job in and of itself. If I wanted to work where I play, I would volunteer to staff. Give me the one-and-done roll any day of the week, so I can know what's happening to my character and move on.

But I am notorious in still living in the 90s, when WoD would unapologetically fuck your shit up in every arena, then taunt you for not having brought a backup character sheet ready to go. God I miss the days when people would whine less about losing a character.... or even the autonomy of their character.

Here's a participation trophy for you!

FUCK THAT SHIT! YOU WIN A REAL TROPHY OR YOU GET CONSOLATION ICE CREAM! THOSE ARE THE OPTIONS!

...seriously though, I refused to let my kids accept 'participation' awards. They need to know that life will not praise them for doing 'okay'.

To this I say... if you cannot handle having your character's feelings determined by outside sources? NOT THE GAME SYSTEM FOR YOU. Its like the college kids claiming they can't handle a lecture on WWII because 'omg NAZIS' and need a safe space from the mean, hurtful facts of the past.

I dislike comparing social 'combat' to physical combat. Even physical combat guidelines and rules are severely dumbed down to make things simple and straight-forward for everyone to deal with. There's plenty of nuance to physical combat, its just been ignored since day one because it would make combat too much of a pain in the ass to deal with. You absolutely could quantify and generalize social interactions, but people don't want to accept what might happen to their characters if you did. Because that would mean you actually could seduce someone away from their significant other, you could be shamed into doing favors for someone else. And people don't like it when they don't have full autonomy over their character. So you will never get that relatively easy ruleset until the players stop bitching about not being in complete control of their character's choices/actions/etc.

Okay! Time for my long ass list of mods. Most of what I'm running right now is just immersion mods. There are a few 'cheat' mods tossed in, but nothing game-breaking.

Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (because DUH)
Cutting Room Floor (this is all the extra stuff that Bethesda made for Skyrim that didn't actually end up in the finished game. NPC's, quests, items, etc.)
Skyrim Unlimited Rings and Amulets SSE (yes this is a cheat mod since it allows multiple amulets, but dammit, I can wear more than two rings with eight fingers and two thumbs!)
Carry Weight x100 (I know, I know, but holy Hell am I tired of picking through the inventory of every creature I kill to grab only what I can absolutely carry... I want to be able to loot and move on!)
Point the Way (retexture and fixing of the road signs in Skyrim, because some of them will actually point you in the wrong direction)
Run For Your Lives (stupid NPC's trying to fight dragons and ending up dead)
Darkwater Crossing (village expansion of an existing place)
When Vampires Attack (Like Run For Your Lives, but for vampires!)
Bring Out Your Dead (graveyard expansion for unique NPC's because you know some of them will die anyways!)
Dolmen Ruins (addition of Elder Scrolls lore, puts in the ruins of the Dark Anchors Molag Bal used in the Planemeld)
Shor's Stone (expansion of pre-existing village)
      Ivarstead (expansion of pre-existing village)
      Kynesgrove (expansion of pre-existing village)
Whistling Mine (expansion of pre-existing place)
      Karthwasten (expansion of pre-existing village)
Storefront (spouse will run a market during the day)
The Paarthumax Dilemma (allows you to not kill Paarthumax and still finish the Blades quest line, if you want)
Shadowmarks (adds Thieves Guild shadowmarks to your player homes)
Oblivion Gates in Cities (because every trace of Oblivion should not have been erased from the landscape in a few mere centuries! Non-functioning gates)
Gildergreen Regrown (lets you plant the sapling of Gildergreen and actually see it grow over time)
Runandwalkpaces (makes NPC's move at YOUR pace)
RichMerchantsSkyrim_x5 (because 600 gold is stupidly low for a merchant)
Relationship Dialogue Overhaul (because I want to have real conversations with people, not just one of three randomly selected lines being spat out at me)
Book Covers Skyrim (retexture of book covers, much nicer)
      Dragon Claw Stands (self-explanatory)
      WetandCold (already noted before)
Open Cities Skyrim (no more load times into the cities, bitches!)
Rebalanced Leveled Lists (better and more appropriate loot from killed creatures)

      That's all thus far. ^_^

Took the eldest spawn to Howl-O-Scream again this year, third year running! Its damn near a mother/son tradition now! Even got some pictures and videos and posted them to Facebook. 🙂 Just enjoying the fact that no matter how much my eldest and I bicker, we can still enjoy the fuck out of some haunted houses and theme park food together.

    • RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.

@Insomnia I get what you're saying, I really do... it sucks that there are some chicks out there claiming to be 'gamers' that are really just capitalizing on their "assets" instead of displaying any real gaming. But at the same time... that does not make it their fault that Random Guy decides that since This Chick is a bikini girl gamer, ALL girls are bikini girl gamers. That is Random Guy's fault for being a douche.

Simply put... the blame should always go to the harasser for being harassing, never to the prior harassed party (no, not even if they didn't stop it). Appropriate behavior is subjective and differs from person to person. What you might see as harassment, another might see as harmless flirtation and vice versa.

      EXAMPLE:
Jane is a stripper. She gets paid to take her clothes off. She smiles her way through a lot of terrible and demeaning comments each shift because it makes her more money. Even if she doesn't like it, she puts up with it because she wants that extra cash.

Sarah is a ballerina. She sometimes wears semi-revealing costumes for her job, but her dancing does not include her removing clothing. She receives applause and roses for a job well done.

Bob frequents both strip clubs and the ballet, since both allow him to watch scantily clad women dance around a stage. While Bob catcalls Jane and Jane puts up with it to get that extra ten dollars from Bob, it is NOT Jane's fault if Bob turns around and starts catcalling Sarah at the ballet. BOB is the one choosing to behave inappropriately, despite the fact that both women have a passingly similar job (ie. dancing in scanty/tight-fitting costumes for money).

    • RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.

@Thenomain I'm not trying to say it never existed before WoD. Hell, it happened in D&D TT's for years before online gaming was even a thing. But WoD actually thematically allows for creeptastic behavior in an IC sense, A lot of the splats were originally built around being a monster in a world where bad shit happening is a day ending in Y. Rarely have I heard as much squawking about creepy/harassing behavior as I have from WoD games.

@Arkandel WoD doesn't force anything, and nowhere did I say OR imply that. Staff not doing anything about it seems more a symptom of the 'different game, same people' thing. Same staff that ignore shit on this game were the same people ignoring shit on the last game and will probably be the same people ignoring shit on the next game. Nor am I blaming them for not doing something when nobody's talking. I'm blaming the players for not saying something to get staff in gear. Or at least to be able to say 'well we've put in complaints against X here, here, and here and still nothing is being done about it'. At that point (and only that point), will it become an issue of staff not doing anything. The situation I mentioned specifically? That's on the players refusing to say anything. If they thought that a single instance of complaints was going to be enough to boot a first-time offender from a sphere/game? They're being intentionally obtuse. Because again, 'different game, same people'. They should know better by now.

    • RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.

WoD/CoD games are definitely the frontrunner for creeptastic happenings. Because yes, its written into the system for said things to happen. What makes it an issue is that despite all the policies and statements and assurances that you as a player can totally choose to FTB and simply work out the aftermath OOCly, or if the harassment is OOC that you can always leave the scene/room/etc., complaints are rarely taken as seriously as they should be. Now, I feel the responsibility for this needs to be shared amongst staff and players. For the staff that do care and want to help... they'll never know something is wrong if people don't say anything. For the players (like myself) that are jaded and cynical and think nothing will come of it? That's been earned through hard experience of exactly that happening. Not just once or twice, but over and over again.

Hunter sphere on FC is suffering this right now. There is a single player that is so obnoxious, annoying, harassing, and otherwise assholish that he has single-handedly managed to largely kill the sphere. Why? Because he's always there. He's the first to jump into an event when it goes up, he's constantly on channel... and nobody wants to have to deal with him anymore. But... so few people are willing to speak up about his behavior that staff response probably seemed non-existent to the players. So there's staff, thinking things must be fine since nobody's complaining... and there's the playerbase thinking that saying something won't matter because staff didn't appear to do anything to him the first time around. It becomes a perpetual cycle that kills the sphere for everyone. Plot quickly dried up since the plot runners never wanted to have to deal with him more than once but nobody felt they were allowed to kick him out of their PRP's. Without plot, RP quickly fell to the BaRP curse as people got tired of socializing and just drifted away to other spheres or even other games. Now the channel is often silent since nobody wants to have to hear X trumpeting about all the time, RP is scarce and is often just '3 people in a private room' type of RP for fear that a public scene will draw him out, and players are getting frustrated and/or leaving more easily/often.

So yeah, the harassment thing is kinda a double-edged sword. Yes, there needs to be staff willing to take action against these types of players. But first there still needs to be players willing to stand up and say something. And not just once, either. We kinda have to accept that most types of general harassment or asshole behavior will be dealt with in the '3 strikes' format. So every time this person acts out, it needs to be documented and spoken out about (in proper format), so staff can take the proper steps. And keep in mind, I am not staff on FC (I was actually turned down when I applied to help out), and I am one of the people that largely drifted away because I removed myself from the situation rather than wait for other people to speak up about it as well.
