Current Whine: I want to feel pretty. I mean not pretty, but I am feeling down and I wish I was the type of hot where people were like "I want to do things to you sir".

Tinder is a self esteem bitchslap. I feel ugly.

Fuck those random people. You're awesome and don't let anyone tell you different!

What if I don't feel I need pre-determined questions in order to make an in-depth character? I'm still going to feel like I -have- to answer those stupid questions just to be at the same starting level as everyone else. Incentivized BG's just end up penalizing the people that don't want to or don't feel they need to.

At the end of the day, the people that WANT to write a bg, will write a bg. They won't need 'incentives' to do it. Incentivizing a bg just penalizes the people that don't like writing bg's. If they have a purpose of 'providing more depth', why do you need a reward to do it?

@Cobaltasaurus Are there children in the house? That's generally how my dishes end up not in the dishwasher. Kids rinse and dump in the sink and run off to play.

Bahahahahahaha! 2-3 paragraphs? Man, people are lucky if they get me to fill out a bg in complete sentences these days! I answer the questions and that's that. I still don't get why half the questions asked about mortals in a bg are in there. Is it REALLY relevant to the game if my character was a precocious child that couldn't sit still and enjoyed wearing rainboots with blue tutus? Does it matter whether they got through school by studying and doing extra credit or because they're naturally gifted? No, not really. So long as what the character does and how they act fits the stats they have, it doesn't really matter HOW they got there.

Bonus silly points for those questions being asked of Vampires or Changelings. Characters that have potentially lived long/been through enough for that childhood to be completely irrelevant to anything.

Not real. Those legs would have been FLAILING even if a person managed to get them off their feet. Also, the mouth shape doesn't change or close, the eyes don't blink, and you can SEE the thing just start to fall in on itself when the person starts to shove it deeper into the trunk. Animals don't just sit there and let you fuck them up.

@Tempest Given that in oWoD, the Tzmisce clan progenitor was said to literally be the island of New York City... hardly the silliest thing that's come out of that particular line of books. Its what I miss most about oWoD, frankly. The ability to do completely insane shit and have it just be a Tuesday.

@HelloRaptor Does that mean we can make up Numina in this game? 😄 😄 😄 Please please pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease! I've always hit a huge wall of panic from staff whenever I've attempted to suggest that a Numina could replicate a particular 'power' and I would LOVE to see that change.

I think I remember that plot... and the frothing... and laughing hilariously to myself over the bitching about it. But I also know Dyaria's player and immensely enjoyed watching him just 'old man' everything in the face.

All I have to say is: A narrative by itself is not an RPG. If you do not get to make choices, then it is not an RPG. If you do get to make choices, and none of them can impede/alter/halt or end the story, it is not an RPG.

However, none of these things by themselves also make a game an RPG. So go figure.

You also just described a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book. XD

@Cobaltasaurus Modern romance. Bunch of brothers that own a tattoo parlor and the women they fall in love with (plus a few side books about their friends). I know of a dozen books in the series so far.

Oh, there's also Cora Seton. She has a lovely set of novel's set in a town called Chance Creek. Also modern romance. There's a ton of them, I've got maybe 5-6 and I'm still finding more.

    • RE: What series are you reading?

coughs Anxiously awaiting payday so I can buy the latest in the Dark-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I know, I know, low-brow paranormal romance... whatever. Its engaging, I like the continuity of the stories and recurrence of characters from previous books, and I can kill a quick two hours reading it.

    • RE: Selecting a system to play

Oh sure! If I like a game enough then I'll dive in and and least poke at the new rules. But I generally need incentive of some kind to want to put in that amount of time to learn it. I like D&D well enough, but not so much that I'm going to run out and buy 5th ed. I pretty much stopped at 3.5/Pathfinder. I'm told its much like 3.5 but with some elements of 4th to make play easier. So I guess if someone handed me the book free of charge I would sit down and at least flip through it, but I wouldn't purposely seek it out unless I had a good reason (lots of friends playing there, know and like the GM enough to give it a shot, etc.).

    • RE: Selecting a system to play

Probably not, just my nitpickiness rearing its head. I'm still in @Arkandel's camp on this one, though. Not that I'm going to log into someone's game that using an obscure ruleset *to bitch at them, mind... but I still think he's got a valid point. As many of us find ourselves with less and less free time, how many really want to use that slowly closing window to have to learn a whole new ruleset just to play on a new game? I'm pretty sure that's a factor in why so many people are looking to convert popular video games into popular RPG rules. Less of a learning curve, you already know at least the basics, now you just have to apply them to a new game and new terms.

*edited for leaving out an important part of the statement
