This doesn't work for MU*s, but every ttrpg I've been in has had a session 0 where we discuss the tone of the upcoming game, what we can reasonably expect to see, and what people are not okay with. With the option to send a private message to the DM if you want to nix something without airing it publicly.

This, to me, is a basic courtesy to everyone involved.

Yeah, I think pretty much everyone who has unusual triggers is aware that their triggers are unusual. "Content Warning: Drowning" is likely going to be something someone with a problem brings up beforehand or does what @Pyrephox described above. They aren't going to get mad about it.

Now, if you casually drop sexual assault on your players without explicitly asking how they feel about such things? Yeah, you're a shitty person.

Despite how the "anti-SJW" crowd likes to portray folks, people who request trigger warnings are for the most part extremely reasonable people who happen to have experienced something really upsetting and would like to avoid experiencing it again.

ETA: gotta say @Derp I was surprised at your response, because

This thread comes from a place of like -- gushing empathy, but there is an entire other side of the population that learn to professionally disconnect from emotional reactions and making decisions based on how people feel.

Right, but here's the thing--if you come home from the courthouse or the hospital or whereever and you can't reconnect? You're in serious shit, mental health wise. Yes, I've looked at autopsies and talked about dead people and examined detailed reports of sexual abuse of toddlers, and yes, I was able to leave that at the office and come home and sleep at night just fine.

But holy shit I did not adopt that as my primary way of living! You can't look at life like a courtroom or an operating theater. You just can't. It will wither your soul.

      @saosmash

Our reporting is required yearly, but it's only 12.5 hours and it doesn't have to have anything to do with what we practice, which is why I spent a day three weeks ago listening to 4 hours of how to set up business entities in such a way as to reduce tax liability.

And thank you for your kind words. It was a combination of the work and the workplace. Once I'm better, I'll return to the fight in some manner or other. My character comes by her ornery stubbornness honestly.

Ugh. It's a nightmare in Louisiana particularly. We'll see how this sensitivity training works out, first.

      Thanks, robocat. ❤

At the end of the day, law school just doesn't prep you to know whether or not you're built for litigation. I still like policy work, and when I'm healthier I intend to get back into it. But the relentless pace combined with my mental health combined with my transition combined with, you know...

      gestures at 2020

It burnt me out. But like I said: keeping the license. Still paying dues, doing CLEs. Just in case.

I'm a lawyer. We're supposed to be essential. But not all of us have to deal with criminal stuff.

And those of us who do can't always handle it. I quit my job and have been unemployed since August, though I'm keeping up my license. It was too much. Still living with my parents, helping around the house, trying to fix my mental state. Hopefully going to start up a joint venture with my mother educating lawyers about trans issues, but everything is in flux right now.

So, like... I've been talking to friends, playing video games, and trying to ignore the crushing sense of failure.

I took a 3 year long leave of absence from my undergraduate university and ended up becoming an attorney. Take care of yourself. My poor care of my own mental health throughout my twenties has robbed me more than any extended leave of absence ever could. Nobody will judge you for having taken a break in 2020.

Not good if you have TMJ, like I do, but then again neither is chewing ice and taking abominable care of your teeth because of depression and never going to see a dentist because they'll hate you and judge you for being a terrible garbage person who doesn't take care of her teeth or even FLOSS

      like I also do

Yeah I mean I think it's useful to say here that there are relative limitations to how "hippy" a church can be and stay within the bounds of Nicene Christianity (which the Unitarian Universalists and various sects of Quakers, laudable though they may be, do not).

PCUSA was the first major denomination to have gay marriage in the US. Not hard at all.

Those two things are totally not the same thing, at all.
