There is an Info channel that I lurk in wait on that is great for asking questions after you have an approved PC.

For real, Roz is quick draw with the info. I frequently tell people that if they have questions, to not hesitate to ask and that if I don't know the answer, I'll get it from someone who does. That is Roz.

      I'm competitive.

@tnp I mean, I think at this point @Sunny has identified the areas she wants or needs to pull back on for her own peace of mind, has done some of the pulling back, and already said she knows she should probably pull back more on MSB but that it's a process. I don't think anything is really gained by people belaboring what she should or shouldn't do to take care of herself; she only seemed to bring it up for some context regarding her feedback for the thread. I imagine she can generally trust herself to decide what she needs.

I mean, I would expect that if someone truly started designing an entirely web-based MU* experience, that it would involve visual or audio notifications for things like new poses. Activity notifications are the real reason I pay attention to my client, not that it's in a separate window as my web browser. I too don't want to have the less immediate RP experience as PBP or whatevs, but there's no real reason why a web-based experience has to be that and can't have a similar notification setup as a client. Or an even more precise one, really. Imagine different sorts of notifications for different sorts of activity: one for posing, one for chat, etc.

My biggest thing, re: statted systems vs. consent games (because consent games are not systems, so the term does not apply) is where the power lies.

On the latter, the power lies in the hands of Staff and whoever has the loudest voice. Your meek players and those who are not comfortable approaching authority are at a loss. How many people have just quietly left games because they don't feel comfortable approaching Staff?

I mean, shit, I am the person other people come to on games because I'm that person who will just bullshit with Staff on channels and even I have just left games rather than deal with some shit because I've encountered Staff I can't find that level of rapport with. I know people who can never, ever find that level of comfort. Faraday, for example, is one of the most approachable Staffers you will ever meet and I have had to shove people at her and tell them it is totally okay to talk to her and that is on mundane, happy issues and not 'hey this person is being a problem.'

In statted systems, you put power in the hands of your players. You give even your meek, anxious, introverted players something they can hold onto. You give people a voice. You give them something concrete they can hold onto, they can point to, they can back themselves up with. You give your Staff a base to work off of in arguments rather than he-said-she-said and hoping a smart third party or a decent log is available.

I love consent for storytelling and I still engage in a lot of it, even in statted systems, but even then only for people I trust.

I disagree, but only because it can be switched.

In a full consent game, an honest staffer can't just, say, kill your character for no reason, or because they feel like it. You have the power to no-consent anything. Even if Mortiz tries to drop his Red Kryptonite plot and have Superman rape you because he's just soooooo craaaazy, you can say 'nope, not happening'.

In a stat system, if a staffer doesn't like the argument you're making and how you're using the system to back it up, they can (and will, in many cases) just House Rule that shit to the point where you're wrong, because that's not how it works here.

Again, context is irrelevant when we're talking about shitty people vs. decent people.

And yet, in the case that killed consent games for me, this is exactly what happened. I hit a situation in a scene with a staffer that went past my level of comfort. It would have ruined my character's playability. It made me insanely uncomfortable OOCly (anyone who has RP'd with me for an extended period of time knows that I can handle just about anything, too).

I called a stop and they refused. It was go through with it or be banned from the game.

I was given absolutely no option and cussed out.

So this is not the case at all.

That's because the game had a shitty staffer, though. Like, we have to be able to talk about systems in terms of how they would work with good staffing. The problem you're describing is not a problem because it was a consent game. It was because you had a ridiculously terrible staffer being awful to you.

As for deleting posts? @Arkandel has generally not been a fan. I guess because of a fear of people getting really upset if their posts suddenly disappear (there's also the issue that quotes don't disappear, I suppose). But if people are okay with it, I will totally start going in and just deleting the offending posts.

It's much easier anyway. Go go laziness.

People will totally be upset. But folks are absolutely correct that people will also be more likely to learn to follow the rules with some more clear consequences.

A lot of these formats are actually not great for RP, and that's another thing I've discovered from players who try out MU* and manage to hook in: they find it a much better platform for RP than others they were using before. Like, guys, we actually have a lot of potential to bring in a lot of new players, we just need to lower the bar a little where we can.

      Okay. I like this.

I'm not a coder. What can I do to help?

I mean, the stuff that I did while I was still staffing was things like -- write some really, really basic "Intro to MU*" type of guides. Take a hard look at terminology and try to recognize what stuff seems obvious to us but totally unintuitive to someone brand new. I wrote up descs for different "paths" through the chargen rooms to basically be like "If you are BRAND NEW, please follow THIS PATH by typing THESE THINGS" type of deal. And those rooms had a much more detailed outline of how to do things, how things work, etc.

Also we, like -- just went to places we knew people were RPing about our game theme. (For us, there was a lot of Tumblr RP around the IDW Transformers comics, so we advertised on Tumblr.)

Speaking just as one user among many

Here's my take on "one user among many": You can have brilliant ideas that would help the many. Sometimes you have to defend those views, but just because you're not "the many" doesn't make those ideas any less valid.

Oh, I was just being polite. I totally think my ideas are brilliant.

Except I think we can all agree that the negative regularly becomes overwhelmingly vitriolic and often dogpiles.

Then that would be an argument for locking the threads to only the ads and legit q+a, nothing will ever convince me that allowing positive without negative as well is anything else but an attempt to allow others to blow smoke up my ass which is the exact reason I have have the entire ad section on ignore for months.

I'm not sure why you're arguing about this. Didn't @Auspice bring up ad threads specifically to say "It might be time for us to just lock the ad threads to just their ads and let people discuss them elsewhere and we can leave links to the other threads"? She's already agreed to a thing that fulfills your wants.

For me RP needs to be real time. Again, it doesn't mean this is the only 'valid' way to do it, but that's what would work for me.

This would be the biggest sticking point for me to move away from telnet. If the RP is not real time I lose interest. I tend to wander a bit waiting for a pose if it is longer than 5 minutes. With MUSH this is when i get my house work done peeking back every couple of minutes until things pick up. Sadly with web based this would be were I found a video to watch and the scene would likely be forgotten about.

Out of curiosity, why do you feel telnet is needed for real-time interaction? Modern web browser clients with websockets or ajax/comet can (and do) also produce real-time game play. I can see the argument for long-time mud-clients having more features than their browser equivalents, but telnet has nothing to do with that? Maybe you are referring to "forum RP" when you say "web"?
      .
      Griatch

I don't think telnet is a requirement for real time, but in the current MUSH environment things have drifted to the point where things move slower than I would like, I can't see how moving the way to play the game to a program that presents literally thousands of other things to do while RPing will not adversely affect response times. It is not a tech issue but a human behavior issue.
And I will admit I would be part of the problem, if I ended up waiting more than five minutes I would wander down a youtube rabbit hole and cause the whole thing to be even slower.

What do you do now between poses? Honest question. I feel like everyone I know also has a web browser open while they're RPing, so I don't see how what you're saying it's actually different.

@surreality said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

@Sunny I feel you on this. I love -- love love love -- some world-building, but the amount of info needed is not easy for something that doesn't have an RPG book handy that people can get and read through.

That said, most games involve at least one RPG book that someone has to get and read through. (Or a television series to watch, or a series of novels, etc.)

In my two decades of MU*ing, I've only played two that involved an RPG book. And one of them I only played on for like two scenes, so I don't really count it. There's a lot of games around that don't involve any RPG books. Which is not to say that the overall encouragement you were giving Sunny is wrong, just that there are a lot of lot of games around that aren't WoD or based on other written tabletop systems.

I played the Steam version of Chrono Trigger and thought it looked and sounded gorgeous? I know it didn't look great at first release, but then they came back in with a visual mode for the original pixel look instead of the terrible blurred filter, and it honestly looked gorgeous on a 4k monitor. I didn't notice anything weird about the audio (and I streamed it all, including to a number of long-time CT fans, and nobody mentioned anything sounding weird). It was my first time playing though and just a couple months ago, so there had been time for patches since the initial Steam release.

Leave ad threads for the ads, ad updates, and maybe links to discussion posts elsewhere on the forum. Either lock it (if the functionality exists) or delete extraneous posts.

Yes. After the initial ad post, lock it. A mod can create a Q&A thread in Mildly Constructive and a Game Review thread in the Hog Pit and link both of them in the ad itself.

Why does the mod need to create the thread? If people want to ask questions, they can create their own discussion thread. If they want to get down in the muck, they can create their own Hog Pit thread.

Mostly house work or dishes, basically things I will be happy to leave to check the client window. I do not have a browser open, if I do it does quickly lead to RP death.
I would postulate that everyone having a browser open is likely why 10 minute waits even in a small scene have become the norm, which at least to me is not to me a good thing.

Edit to add: though I will freely admits my preferences do not necessarily match most peoples, sicne I would prefer an average pose delivered in 3-5 minutes to a great one that took 10.

Idk man, I always have my browser open and regularly take just 3-5 minutes to pose. I'd be way slower if I were doing housework.
