@mietze I'm a huge huge wiki fan and will always be on the side of wikis, but, like -- are there really games where even basic info like someone's last name isn't included in a +finger or +sheet? That is dumb. Even I won't argue for that.

I'm an one-alt-at-a-time guy. If I have more than one, the second is nearly never played. That means I'm pretty dependent on being well connected on an IC (and possibly OOC) level to find RP, since I can't simply switch to my vampire if nothing's happening around my werewolf.
On the other hand the same thing has made me really proactive. I cultivate relationships with other PCs, I make sure my character is on their speed-dial if shit happens and I try to include them in anything I'm involved with whenever possible.
Being sociable pays off in multiplayer games, who knew.
I think that's what things come down to, really. Sometimes I hear players complain about not fitting in or not hooking into RP, but I've literally only seen them RP in two or three scenes. To a certain extent, I totally believe you just have to put in a certain amount of time. Some of it's not going to end up being super exciting, but just putting in work into cultivating new relationships tends to always be necessary.
I have a friend who literally spits characters out fully formed -- she instantly has their history, their personality, their voice, etc. It is her talent, and she always kind of hilariously shrughands in a helpless manner when OOC chatter turns to the process of building characters, because it's not just not how her head works. But even then, she still has to go in and do the hooking work. You gotta be proactive. At the same time, you have to recognize that sometimes you will be proactive, you'll do all the things you should, but a character just doesn't hook. And that's okay!

Transformers: Lost & Found
Transformers: Lost and Found MUX is a new Transformers roleplaying game based in the IDW canon following The Death of Optimus Prime leading into Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye.
We're currently in Alpha testing, which means that we're open for players and RP, but are still setting up all of our coded systems. We're excited to be able to include combat code from or inspired by FiranMUX, with kind permission from the game's owners.
Are you into the idea of robots going on space adventures that range from the ridiculous to the ridiculously painful? Check out our wiki at http://lostandfound.riverdark.net/wiki/ and take a look around, or connect straightaway to the game at riverdark.net: 1984!

RE: Storytelling
@Autumn said:
This might sound strange, but along with versatility, I like a little direction. Especially in games (cough, Mage, cough) where the number of possible options is not so much 'large' as 'overwhelming', I like having some ideas about what a good next step might be. I might still have a brainwave and decide that I don't really want to investigate the city manager's office or track down one of the mystical owls seen outside the Consilium headquarters just before the attack or bargain with the Mysterium for information stored in their secure library, and instead go off and do something completely different.
Sometimes when I'm told I can do anything at all I just freeze up and can't decide which sounds like the best right now. And while I very much appreciate a storyteller who's willing to indulge me if I decide to order something that's not on the menu, I also appreciate there being a menu if I need to ask for one.
Not strange at all, and also really important. If the players are really lost, don't just leave them to flail. Give 'em a little something to get them going again. The point isn't to make your plot a puzzle they need the exact right pieces to solve, it's to tell a story.

I think it’s better for all concerned to have a truthful, simple, short and clear explanation for the ban in all circumstances.
It prevents a lot of issues.
Bob was banned because of x incidents of inappropriately using ooc info IC. Please see our policy of x (if there is one). If you have questions or need a gut check about your own behavior in this regard please feel free to reach out to staff.
I think when I have seen silence or “face saving” explanations allowed to be given for someone being asked to leave, it tends to stir up more upset or in some cases allows that person to act as if nothing happened/no cause.
That’s not really good for anyone in that situation.
^^^^^^^^^
Ban posts/announcements are for the benefit of the rest of your game, not the banned party. And they serve a function and purpose. Obfuscating them eliminates that benefit and actually causes problems.

I mean ... I'm not approving anybody to play Ramsay Bolton on a game I run, because that character exists to be an edgelord rapist.
Double amen. Characters that work in a book -- and, I mean, Ramsay's value as a character is already debatable, but whatever, putting that aside -- don't necessarily equal characters that work on a MU*. Writing a book is not a collaborative*; RPing on a MU* is.
(*Yes, I mean, it is collaborative when it comes to working with an editor, critique groups, etc., all of that, but it's not the same type of collaboration. YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I MEAN.)

RE: Armageddon MUD
@alexrocker The point isn't whether or not this is still a problem on your game. All I was saying is that what you were identifying as people's objection in this thread was inaccurate. People responded with their experiences, which yeah, may have been a few years ago, others responded saying, yeah that doesn't sound great, I wouldn't want to be punished IC for an OOC slip, and then the offending FEE FEES phrasing was brought out as if not wanting to be punished IC for an OOC slip was just a bunch of people being wildly oversensitive. Which the OP has already apologized for in terms of phrasing. But I wrote to clarify, because your response seemed really inaccurate in terms of why people were expressing concerns.

RE: Staff and ethics
@surreality If you want to start a thread on it, by all means! But I feel like the best course of action -- when there's only been like two posts on the topic -- is to start a new thread and maybe quote those posts. Instead of just moving our posts that are part of the conversation here. I'd rather not feel like every brief digression is going to be up for immediate split, because I do think the points were relevant in response to the points other people were bringing up on this thread.

RE: Armageddon MUD
@thugheaven The difference is that what you said before was "Or people might not let you retcon, because it's Dark Souls and ICA=ICC."
Like, just accept the fact that your game is less forgiving when it comes to OOC ignorance -- even if it's gotten better -- and accept that that's a playstyle not many folks on this particular board will be into, as MSB tends to be more focused on MUSH and MUX playstyles.

@Roz Hahaha, I've encountered these types too, but there's another type that I find quite puzzling. When people play hyper-abrasive assholes or complete creeps.
I was playing on shadowrun a little while back and someone poses in being a really aggressive, rude asshole. Then they got bitter on +pub when characters that were better socialized just left rather than be around that. I just don't understand why anyone would choose to socialize with a character like that unless they were trapped on an island.
Is it because I work in the service industry that I have a low tolerance for characters like this? Or have I just not seen 'edgy rp' done well?
I think that this is usually only done well when there is a lot of OOC communication. My characters can definitely be dickish sometimes, and don't hesitate to be rude, but I try my best to be pleasant and cheerful OOC, and to let people know that the player is not the character, and vice versa, and work with them OOC on how we'd like to progress. I can often find ways of resolving the conflicts.
Usually.
I totally always make that a sort of personal rule when I'm playing a character who's a total dick. I mean, I try to be nice in general OOC, but I'm a little especially nice when I'm playing a character who's mean, nasty, an asshole, etc. It helps to keep everything separate.

RE: The Eighth Sea - Here There Be Monsters
@seraphim73 Yeah, I mean -- it's really pretty? It's an attractive wiki. I just don't really care about pretty. For me, the thing I care about the most in regards to a game wiki or website is efficiency of use and clarity of information, and the idea of doubling up work needlessly touches a very deep aversion in my soul. So I'm not likely to play an Ares game that's going to ignore the web portal. (Especially, SORRY FOR MY MEDIAWIKI ELITISM, for Wikidot.)

@tek I fucking /hate/ that. One a super hero game I've played on since before the turn of the millennium there is this one staffer who :snugs constantly, and openly, in pages, on channels, and I am like: Don't do that.
I've said it multiple times, and they KEEP FUCKING DOING IT.
I find it aggravating but manageable when people do it when they barely know you, but continuing to do it when someone tells you repeatedly not to is SO SUPER CREEPY.

RE: The limits of IC/OOC responsibility
@magee101 said in The limits of IC/OOC responsibility:
Personally for me this is my guidelines for the various IC positions you mentioned.
Significant IC position in a group: You should be willing to meet with other memebers for RP at least once a week to pass along IC information, if need be have a 'court day' where your PC has an open door policy. You should also be willing to do ST a miniplot or something along those lines once a month, usually handed out as an assignment from your character.
Leadership PCs should not be expected to GM. Playing leadership and GMing are two completely different skillets. Focus on someone who has the former.

RE: Blood of Dragons
I was super surprised not to get someone from BoD knocking on our door when I was staffing on the old Steel & Stone GoT game a few years ago. It was a thing pretty commonly spoken about in regards to other GoT games.
At the end of the day, the real reason people on this thread have a recoil factor in regards to BoD is not really because of the IP issues, it's about the really public behavior of the owners.

RE: The limits of IC/OOC responsibility
@magee101 I'm telling you that that definition isn't actually a MU* standard. Lots of games I've been on have called anyone who is running a plot a GM. I'll agree that someone in a leadership position should have a firm grasp on the game rules and theme, sure. But whether or not they need to be plot creators is very dependent on the game and how plot flows in the game. A lot of my experience is with leadership PCs helping to navigate plot being directed at them by other sources, often staff. They don't need to be creating plot themselves.

RE: Valorous Dominion
Got tugged here by some friends and got a character through CG easily enough! Not familiar with the system, but it wasn't at all difficult to parse. Staff has been helpful and responsive, folks seem generally friendly. I've just had a few scenes with the family I came in with. There's clearly been a lot of thought and development that's gone into the setting and system stuff (as evidenced by the other VD thread about its development).
The wiki is pretty painful, alas, both stylistically and functionally. And some helpfiles are missing for commands that are part of their newer system developments. But it's mostly the wiki that makes me sad. (It's not a Mediawiki vs Wikidot thing, just for the record! I don't love Wikidot, but there are many solid game wikis utilizing it.)
It won't stop me playing, though! (It may make me more loathe to post logs, admittedly.) Still having fun for the time being.
