RE: Any interest in a possible TOS-era Star Trek Fate Accelerated game?
@Ghost said:
I might get stoned to death for saying this, but I would have more interest if the era was the JJ Abrams rebooted Quasi-TOS setting. I like the look, the feel, and the Firefly-type chutzpah.
Sexy aliens and gunfights.
So what you're saying is that you don't want to play Star Trek.

RE: The Work Thread
A colleague on my team mentioned at our weekly team meeting yesterday that she had to go to a meeting at 8:30am
scheduled by an Account Director
to talk about the concern he had heard
that he’s calling too many meetings.

RE: How would you run a large scene?
FS3's combat is a total godsend for big combat scenes. I remember literally drinking my way through doing a particularly giant on a totally statless game and wanting to cry. Doing a giant melee on Steel & Stone a couple years later with +combat was a revelation.
We did start breaking the system a few times just because of the number of folks in one +combat, though. I imagine it was Penn limits going on.

I would set that AD on fire.
Luckily neither I nor my current boss roll in until almost 10am so.
(This is an exaggeration, I am usually there by 8:30, but only because I have actual stuff to do.)
lol yeah my boss's immediate reaction was "tell me what account and what AD."

RE: Do you use spawns and how?

@Roz Could you screenshot an example or link one? I'm curious what sort of layout works well enough that you'd only use it under those circumstances.
Sure! It's just the default Atlantis layout. I believe that it has a tab format that's more along the lines of SimpleMU as well, but this works way better for me. But spawning all these channels on SimpleMU wouldn't work for because it's just too many tabs and they aren't easily organized.

RE: Do you use spawns and how?
Lemme tell you, when @Sparks showed up on one of my games several years ago, the other staffers had to sternly tell me not to fangirl at her. Because I love Atlantis an awful lot.

Rewarding people for not using sick leave encourages them to come in sick.
It does not appear that I communicated my idea, so I'll be blunt.
Awarding sick leave encourages people to come in sick.
I mean, think about it. It is a benefit you get for showing up to work. Any benefit for showing up to work incentivizes coming in to work. And while I realize that it is cruel (and arguably unconstitutional in a public setting) to make a person pick coming to work or losing an earned benefit, the entire system could be obviated by not awarding sick leave at all.
Bear with me.
It is far more equitable to make employees salaried without accrued leave. We live in at an age where going to the workplace is getting obsolete. You can use technology to simulate a workplace meeting room, for example. And production is a matter of results, rather than process, in a virtual economy.
So, get rid of sick leave and PTO for employees you want to keep. Put them on a salary and give them benchmarks for performance. Get rid of the workplace attendance and focus on the results. And for those jobs where showing up is half the battle, make up the holes with part-time independent contractors or make sure you have coverage overlap on your roster (like sports teams do).
I'm not following the logic here. I gain the benefit of my sick leave by utilizing my sick leave. Not by going to work.

RE: FS3 3rd Edition Feedback
From someone who has played and staffed on games running FS3, because I think some points might be helpful clarified: actions skills are set by the staff. They decide what selection of skills are going to be baked-in, and like Faraday has said, they should be skills that are going to be important to the game. This will be different based on your theme, because what's important in one game isn't important on another. We don't have anything related to driving in our Action Skills list on X-Factor, which is about mutants, but we do have Transportation on our list for Transformers: Lost & Found, which is meant to account for particular skill in driving/flying/boating whatever for robots in their alt-modes. I would totally do Driving as an action skill if I were running, say, a Mad Max game.
I took Driving as a Background Skill for a character on X-Factor because he has like advanced training in driving and SOMEDAY I'll totally get to roll it for something and it'll be fun. In the new system as Faraday's described it, this would probably end up as an Expertise skill. Right now, players can set pretty much anything they want for a Background Skill from a code point of view. It's a freeform thing where you're just like "I want to put points in Video Games!" It's probably not going to come up in GMed plot scenes, but you might have fun rolling it in a regular scene with another player.
You could totally have a situation where a staff made poor choices about what to put on the Action Skills list when they were building the game; however, the documentation for installing everything is pretty clear on what kinds of skills are best to mark as Action Skills, and how many total skills is a good number to have on that list.
On X-Factor -- and on the now-defunct Steel & Stone, which is where I first encountered FS3 -- we actually give more chargen points to start for characters who are older on the logic that they have had more time to develop skills. This isn't baked-in to the system, though.

RE: The Work Thread
@derp It's a nice thought, but haven't studies shown that giving people unlimited vacation actually ends up with them taking less vacation than they would otherwise?

RE: Do you use spawns and how?
@surreality If you're interested I have an Atlantis client guide I wrote a while back for newcomers to the client/clients in general. You might already know everything there, but just in case!
EDIT: Since writing that guide several years ago I have realized I can group all of my highlights in one line with the "matches regexp" option and | between names. I'm smart.
