      1. Dany has ruled with fear and violence ever since the dragons hatched. The mother of dragons was a dragon; a Targaryen. She has rarely been merciful and the center of her own world. Did she really become a villain, or was she always a villain that the viewer simply had sympathy for?

Oh yeah, like, I don't think they're really doing a GOOD JOB of this final season in general, but the upswell of sentiment that this came totally out of left field for Daenerys is...not correct. You're absolutely right that she's been a conquerer ruling with fear and violence for seasons now. Generally it's just that it's been a bit more contained and directed at people we want to die. But she's been a "I will end all tyranny!" tyrant for a while now.

Grr. This may work up to RL anger, but right now I'm just super annoyed. Our lease renewal showed up in March. I did not have my name listed as a lease holder, and I did not sign it

This is the even more important part: that you weren't listed on the lease either, not just that you didn't sign it. Obviously all state laws are different, but when I was moving out of an apartment and my roommate was staying, the management company taking my name off the lease renewal document so that it only had my roommate's name was literally how they processed that. So I'm gonna guess they're not gonna have much legal ground here. Is the claim here that you didn't give them notice you didn't want to renew and just went with it when they erroneously didn't include your name?

@Sockmonkey. It was a build up for all those years and what did we learn about the White Walkers? Nothing. We didn't learn why the Night King wanted to kill Bran, we didn't learn what his real motivations were.

Well, they did talk about why he wanted to kill Bran in the episode prior, and there was a bit of back and forth. About the Night King wanting to destroy all of humanity and its history, and Bran holds all of that history within himself.

To a few of the points being discussed:

The reason why the "Girl Power" moment can grate (which I know it does to some people, while others are unbothered) is because it's a cheap replacement for Marvel actually giving screen time to female characters having meaningful interactions with each other. It is a shortcut that they have to take because they have not actually spent enough time fleshing out their roster with female characters as they have male characters. (Fortunately, this does seem like something that's beginning to change with movies like Black Panther and Captain Marvel, and I'm looking forward to the next Marvel phase coming in with a lot more diversity of different character types.)

This is also one of the reasons why the sacrifice of Black Widow for Hawkeye is so galling. (Although not the only reason. There is the gender issue, yeah, where Marvel kills off their first female hero character after refusing to give her a film for years and finally greenlighting a prequel film, but it also doesn't doesn't satisfy narrative or character arcs to give the guy who devolved into vigilante mass murder the second chance when his arc would have been so clearly satisfied by self-sacrifice in that moment, versus the woman who was coming into her own leadership-wise and was the one person holding the remaining heroes together and was prime material for leadership of the second wave of Avengers. YES I'M A BIT PEEVED.) ETA: Also the strong implication that Hawkeye deserved to live because he had a family after the cringey "I'm a monster" bit with Widow in Age of Ultron was...not great.

And count me in the camp that didn't appreciate how they handled Thor. Which was not about him burying himself in depression, PTSD, and letting himself go, but by how much they made a repeated punchline out of it. They made him into a joke for the vast majority of the movie. It felt like it was handled to be clownish, not informative.

Also omfg this movie did such a disservice to Steve and Bucky's friendship and also Steve's ending absolutely broke apart their entire time travel logic they were using for the entire rest of the movie.

Despite all of that, I actually really did enjoy the movie!!

I started Return of the Obra Dinn which is SO UNIQUE and INTERESTING, it's by the guy who made Papers Please which is similarly unique and fascinating, but I couldn't even make it an hour before getting too motion sick. I am REALLY BUMMED and might give it one more shot after playing with some settings because even just that one hour was fascinating. It's weird because motion sickness is not usually a problem I have with video games!!

I adjusted some controls, took some Bonine before I played, and after that my motion sickness was under control. In the end, I'd say it was a fantastic and unique puzzle/mystery game.

@Arkandel Ugh, that sucks. Two weeks actually sounds short by Twitch standards, though; there's been a lot of compromised accounts lately, and everyone keeps saying 6-8 weeks for a response from Twitch.

@Dreampipe said in The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves):

When I was 19 I fired a text off to my step-dad explaining my rampant suicidal tendencies, my actual attempts at suicide, and essentially saying "I don't want to live like this anymore, please help me". I didn't have the courage to call him on the phone, so, that was probably a very scary afternoon that he got that word salad of a message. Luckily he wasn't born into the carnival that the rest of my family was so, he took me very seriously and set me up with a psychiatrist immediately.

I don't know why this hit me so hard today but god bless your stepdad.

There is a message it sends that I also am really not at all cool with, that I don't think they intend, and it's especially heartbreaking to me, and I just... can't.

Yeah. Yeeeeeeeeeeah. Coupled with the end of 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend', which is not at all their responsibility because those shows aren't even the same parent company, let alone the same network....

Aw man, I loved the finale of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. 😞

I did, too. My point was more that with the timing of it ending and the season finale of The Magicians, there seems to be a sudden gap of representation of characters of -- ahhh, a particular type, which is all I think I can say without ZOMG SPOILERS -- who have positive relationships, rich emotional ranges, and are able to create meaning their lives despite the thing as opposed to their usual portrayal. Which is generally depicted as burdensome to others, horrific/a warning, a joke, or villainous. I find this deeply upsetting.

OH! You mean that you're now missing that representation because they're both off the air now. I misread earlier!

      FOOD

      • Petee's Pie Company has, as you might guess, ridiculously good pie.
      • Colina Cuervo was a regular brunch spot for me when I lived in the area. If you're just touristing in Manhattan, it might be a bit too out of the way. (It's in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.)
      • The fish tacos at Dorado Tacos were an obsession of mine for a bit when I had a class in the area.
      • Sugar Sweet Sunshine have some of my favorite cupcakes.
      • Ippudo lives up to the hype for me personally if you go for the Akamaru Modern ramen, which is out of this world. HOWEVER, lines here get CRAZY. There are two locations, and one up in Hell's Kitchen (Ippudo Westside) was a bit less crazy when it opened, but I imagine it's caught on since then. If you're solo, you'll have a MUCH easier time of them squeezing you in immediately or with just a few minutes wait. If you wanna try for it, I'd suggest early or late dinner to miss the biggest rush.

      THEATRE

      • Hadestown is gonna be the show to beat at the Tonys this year, and it's regularly discounted right now at the TKTS Booth. Folky singer-songwriter-esque reimagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice story.
      • My Fair Lady is top tier classic musical theatre done lushly and beautifully.
      • Oklahoma! is a stripped down reimagining of the classic that transferred from a very respected Off-Broadway company.
      • Be More Chill is a show people tend to either love or hate; you'll probably know fairly quickly if you give a listen to some of the songs. It got to Broadway on the back of a serious and surprise cult following.
      • Tootsie is a brand new musical adaptation of the movie starring one of my ABSOLUTE FAVS, Santino Fontana.

A lot of my consumption of FUN in NYC was performing arts, so, uh, I'm a bit biased in that direction.
