Seems like if we're going to try to preserve/archive things and not lose any data, figuring out a way to migrate the DB from Redis to Mongo is the way to go.

Not the only way to go.

For example I posted a link above with instructions to migrate nodeBB's database from Redis to another platform for free.

The cost in that scenario is not money but someone's time.

It's only free if you have someone with both time and expertise (and is someone who would be generally trusted by the administration) to do it. Instructions that look basic and easy to one person with fluency in the systems aren't always basic and easy to those who aren't used to working in the command line, etc.

The loss of history would mean/does mean that when people like VASpider pop up in other hobbies, I can't say to the victims 'go here and you'll see that you're not alone, that this is a pattern and that you aren't going insane'. If we lost all the history, I wouldn't even be able to drop by and refresh my memory on the patterns that we've observed over the last 20 years.

We don't often need the receipts. But when we do, it's nice if they still exist. Although, a better search function would help massively.

(No, the VASpider example was not a random example pulled out of thin air.)

I'm really of this mind. I see people regularly mention the loss of the WORA archives for some of the valuable information that was shared there (even amidst a lot of awful). Yes, as a community we are not just an archive, we are wherever we set up, etc., that's all great, but that also feels more like -- the reaction you have when you accidentally lose a whole thing and are trying to move on. I would not want to plan for losing all of it.

I would also pitch in to any sort of fundraising campaign to help improve the forum situation. Unfortunately, while I'm a mildly techy person and tend to pick up stuff, I don't know that I have the full expertise for a lot of what's being talked about regarding server issues and databases. Like, I'd probably be able to help set up something new that had good instructions, but I'm sure I'd struggle with more complex stuff.

But I'd literally help pay for someone else to do it.

When was the last time you (general you, the reader here) looked at a thread that hasn't had posts in more than two months? I would hazard a guess to say that it is a very rare occurrence.

I've done it numerous times but mostly because I get into internet arguments that need Receipts.

What will I do without RECEITS

I think that the act of the armorer showing the actor (and other crew) exactly what's loaded in the gun is actually less about an actor's responsibility for being a final safety insurance and more about giving the other people working peace of mind so that they can do their jobs effectively. Safety in this regards falls to the armorer and the AD, but it's part of the armorer's job to demonstrate the exact status of the firearm in use so that those who could potentially be hurt can verify with their own eyes and feel safe. (And I do believe that any actor who is handling a firearm on a normal set is getting training enough to at least recognize the forms of ammunition being used, what they're looking at when the armorer demonstrates the gun's status, etc.)

@faraday Right. I'm implying that I want every actor to have the same training and responsibility as the armorer, but I'm not suggesting that because I am aware that implication comes from an irrational dread drilled into me since childhood; if that makes any sense at all. My actual proposal would be more akin to learning what the different kinds of bullets look like so the actor has a greater chance of spotting them, especially in a revolver...

From the responses I've seen from armorers and actors about the incident, under standard safety parameters, actors do learn these differences in their training under the armorer, and that's part of the process of the armorer showing them the contents of the gun every time they hand it over for a shot.

In the Rust incident, they failed pretty much all the standard safety measures.

Armorers are, however, expected to fully display the gun's unarmed status to the actor as part of handing it off, and the actor should always be visually confirming that themselves when receiving a weapon. The point isn't that the actor would be the responsible party if the gun was loaded when they were told it wasn't, but that everything should be checked and double-checked and triple-checked at every stage of the process.

Weapons literally are only supposed to leave the armorer's person when they're being handed directly to the actor using them. They don't go through third parties. The armorer is literally wearing the guns when they're keeping things on set to be used in scenes, until they're ready to be locked up again. That's why, yeah, pro armorers are so incredibly shocked at the sequence of events being described on the Rust set, because it's so wildly out of touch with very standard safety measures.

Alec Baldwin as an actor is not directly responsible for the gun being loaded. But Alec Baldwin as a producer holds some responsibility for the overall state of a set wherein accidents had already happened and union crew members had walked off the set due to safety concerns.

@ominous The state of the Rust set sounds like it was very much outside the norm. SL Huang, an author and movie armorer, has written several really insightful Twitter threads about what happened, including the perspective of how weapons are handled on movie sets the vast majority of the time, and the huge numbers of safety failures that had to have happened for this incident.

My first two comments were aggressive, because I am sick of the asshole Gloomhaven fanboys I have had to deal with, and I would burn all copies of it in a giant bonfire that would shame the wildfires of California and some smaller volcanoes, if I could, just to spite the fuckers.

Go be aggressive at them, then? Why be aggressive at someone else here enjoying a thing in a way that is not being an asshole fanboy? You are directing your aggression at the wrong parties and just being kind of unpleasant for no good reason.

I certainly hope they tie it into Lucifer.

It doesn't seem likely, as they have their own Lucifer cast and everything. I haven't gotten around to watching the Lucifer show, but from the outside it often seemed like its connection to the original source material was fairly tenuous, whereas the Sandman show looks like it's planned to be a fairly faithful adaptation. It doesn't really seem like a setup ripe for crossover.

@eye8urcake Jesus. I am so, so sorry, for you and your daughter and her fiancee's family and anyone else who cared for him. I lost my brother to suicide almost a decade ago, and the things I didn't say were enough for intense guilt. I cannot even imagine how even more horrific it would have felt going through the experience your daughter has. I wish I had words that could help more. It's just awful. Please take care of yourself and your daughter as best you can.

I would actually say that Discord's not a great comparison here, because Discord servers absolutely make use of channels, which are, from my perspective, the same exact thing as spawns.

But that's exactly my point. There is a natural visual separation of the data that makes "spawns" in the sense of separate tabbed windows irrelevant.

The Ares web play screen works the same way. (I'm not saying it has 100% feature parity with Discord or that it's perfectly designed in its current form, just that philosophically it's closer than the old MU client model.)

      Ah! Yeah, that makes sense.

For example, consider spawns. Without them on a regular client, everything is jumbled up in one thread. That makes spawns essential, which trains our brains to interact with the game in a certain way. But we don't have spawns in discord, and nobody(*) cares because they're not necessary. Everything is already separated enough.

I would actually say that Discord's not a great comparison here, because Discord servers absolutely make use of channels, which are, from my perspective, the same exact thing as spawns. I can't speak to RP servers on Discord, because I haven't tried them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have IC and OOC specific channels and whatnot. All the Discord servers I'm on have channels to organize conversation.
