Yeah, this doesn't actually seem like a thread for Game Dev.

Yeah but like -- you can't even tell when and where you have activity in Potato spawns like 50% of the time. That's so broken.

PS: SORRY @Roz I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU TOTALLY CUT OFF YOUR OWN ARM AND IT WAS BADASS.

To be fair, @Tez tried to remove my arm first before I insisted on doing it myself.

As for what made me chill with losing an arm: because it was a sci-fi setting and I knew I could get a cool robot arm or something so that the PC's combat utility wouldn't be nerfed and also I got lots of great angst out of him really not liking the robot arm.

Also because his PB was Sebastian Stan so, like -- Bucky.

@coin I've not read that one, so I can't comment! But I probably should, since it's one of my favorite genres.

Pretty surprised you haven't read "The Lottery". 😮

I dropped out of college for various reasons in 2005, and when I went back, it was as a part-time adult student with a full-time job. There were many years of my reading list being dictated to me in the form of a syllabus and a good bit of pop culture I simply didn't have time for, like, at all. I still haven't seen Breaking Bad, or Sons of Anarchy, or anything past the first season of The Walking Dead. You kind of miss a lot with a schedule like that, and I'm only now just starting to fill in some of those gaps. <shrug>

I think the surprise is more that a lot of Americans read that one in high school (in their dictated reading lists!).

@bored I think you're mistaking "doesn't want any sort of criticism/only wants positive feedback" with "just looking for feedback on specific areas of development for the time being." I mean, if the thread happened again, I'd just advise @surreality to respond to any questions outside of the areas of development she wanted to address with a simple "I'm not hashing out that area yet" and ignoring anything further.

So no, I don't actually think it's accurate to say that @surreality (and @faraday) are actually asking for areas where negative feedback is entirely restricted. You're just misrepresenting what the real objections were.

We can go back to @surreality's last game project thread as an example of this, where basically any level of 'I don't like this theme element' or 'I think this won't work' was interpreted as 'you are the destroyers of all hopes and dreams.' Heck, even ignore my interactions with her, since I'm obviously satan or whatever. She reacted this way to @Arkandel too, in the same discussion. I'm pretty sure you all regard him positively.

Okay, no, @surreality and I get into it a lot, and I can't even remember who it was being such a jerk on her thread forever ago, but IF IT WAS YOU or if it was someone else, there were specific areas of feedback that were being requested and WHOEVER IT WAS literally just kept ignoring it. I OFTEN DISAGREE with @surreality about where lines of reasonable discourse are, and I kind of figure I'm in her mental group of unreasonable dogpilers, but you're super misrepresenting what happened on that thread.

Leave ad threads for the ads, ad updates, and maybe links to discussion posts elsewhere on the forum. Either lock it (if the functionality exists) or delete extraneous posts.

Yes. After the initial ad post, lock it. A mod can create a Q&A thread in Mildly Constructive and a Game Review thread in the Hog Pit and link both of them in the ad itself.

Why does the mod need to create the thread? If people want to ask questions, they can create their own discussion thread. If they want to get down in the muck, they can create their own Hog Pit thread.

I feel like I'm seeing a lot of suggestions about pretty detailed requirements for mod actions along the lines of "peel off posts one by one and move them into the Hog Pit and leave a link back at the original post."

I've kind of gotten fully on board with the idea some others have brought up of just letting the mods delete posts and letting people recreate their own conversations. It'll let things run more efficiently, and it might actually get people to eventually learn to think more about what they're posting and where they're posting. And warning repeat offenders and the like. I know at least one of the Reddit subs I frequent has a policy of deleting subsequent posts from folks arguing about post deletions with a message of "Direct arguments about moderation to the modmail." That probably won't fly on MSB because people are pretty attached to getting to do things publicly, but idk, if not that then maybe at least a dedicated post if you really want to argue about stuff.

Leave ad threads for the ads, ad updates, and maybe links to discussion posts elsewhere on the forum. Either lock it (if the functionality exists) or delete extraneous posts.

I guess my overall feeling is that with limiting moderation bandwith, it's better to just be brutally efficient and let the posters take the extra effort of starting new threads elsewhere and leaving behind indications that there are threads.

Except I think we can all agree that the negative regularly becomes overwhelmingly vitriolic and often dogpiles.

Then that would be an argument for locking the threads to only the ads and legit q+a, nothing will ever convince me that allowing positive without negative as well is anything else but an attempt to allow others to blow smoke up my ass which is the exact reason I have have the entire ad section on ignore for months.

I'm not sure why you're arguing about this. Didn't @Auspice bring up ad threads specifically to say "It might be time for us to just lock the ad threads to just their ads and let people discuss them elsewhere and we can leave links to the other threads"? She's already agreed to a thing that fulfills your wants.

@shincashay No, that's the one that you have to remember to hit the button to check.

      I like "on line" spellcheck

      Get a Mac.

(I had to turn it off on my Mac because I fucking hate auto-spellcheck. How many things in the games we play are not 'standard' words? And then it goes and corrects it into something else. Pffff.)

I think they actually just mean active underlining as you go, not autocorrect. (Which I've also turned off, because while it's useful on my phone, it's super not useful on my actual laptop with an actual keyboard.)

I also think it may be time to officially made the Ad thread ads only. No discussion whatsoever. Want to discuss a game? Put up a Hog Pit thread (for the down'n'dirty) or a Constructive thread (for the random chatter). Keep the ad thread for details (the ad, any updates such as big events, opening of new spheres or OCs etc) only.
      How's that sound?

Eh. I kind of like having general-overview sort of comments about the game from others. I also think that it's valuable to have Staff answer some questions about the game there in the ad thread (system, CvC or CvE focus, Can I Have A Gold, etc). I agree that it's really easy for them to get derailed, and it may be more effort moderating them than it's worth, but I think it's definitely worth something.

I think that we all like having some general overview comments from others, along with the opportunity to ask questions, but @Auspice is totally right that they tend to become shit shows more often than not. So I totally get the consideration of just putting discussion and questions somewhere else entirely. Like, yeah, it kind of sucks, but so does our general inability to behave in ad threads, so what're you gonna do?

As for deleting posts? @Arkandel has generally not been a fan. I guess because of a fear of people getting really upset if their posts suddenly disappear (there's also the issue that quotes don't disappear, I suppose). But if people are okay with it, I will totally start going in and just deleting the offending posts.

It's much easier anyway. Go go laziness.

People will totally be upset. But folks are absolutely correct that people will also be more likely to learn to follow the rules with some more clear consequences.

@tnp I mean, I think at this point @Sunny has identified the areas she wants or needs to pull back on for her own peace of mind, has done some of the pulling back, and already said she knows she should probably pull back more on MSB but that it's a process. I don't think anything is really gained by people belaboring what she should or shouldn't do to take care of herself; she only seemed to bring it up for some context regarding her feedback for the thread. I imagine she can generally trust herself to decide what she needs.

I think it'd be more than fair for the mods to just start deleting posts and telling people to relocate if they want to have those conversations. And give people warnings for repeat behavior.

Arx is a Lords and Ladies game, yeah? Not my thing. Also... I see all the drama and stuff that comes out of there and don't even want to get involved in that. I'm on a serious anti-drama kick after some stuff on FC.

Eh, it's only really a L&L game if you want to play into the noble politics aspect of it. Which plenty of people don't. That's not really the focus of the game.
