Weirdly I have a kind of hard mental cut off for scheduling RP, outside of specific events. If somebody say asks if I will be free 7pm on Tuesday to RP?

The internal response is almost immediately a kind of mental FUCK NO! NEVER!

Even if I was originally probably planning to be around and RPing at that time.

I dunno why, but as soon as RP is hard scheduled with a date and time I just don't enjoy it. It carries a feeling of obligation, and it's no longer fun. I'll do it for people because some people can't RP otherwise and need me to help move their stories along, but I just think of it as work. I'm glad they enjoy it, but I often am so dialed out that when people talk up about how they loved the RP I have no idea what they are talking about since I don't remember the scene at all. It was a job that was taken care of.

This really bums me out, because if I never scheduled things there would just be people I'd never RP with. Or maybe RP with after weeks or months of us pinging back and forth with "Hey you free?" Which just leaves me feeling anxious for weeks.

Unless all I want to do is BarRp then scheduled RP is a must.

The topic deserves its own thread maybe, schedule vs unscheduled. Not sure how I feel about it said this way, it almost sounds like its assuming all non-scheduled RP is BarRp. I don't schedule and I usually go for some story, something is or has happened to interact with/to for me. Similar to @Auspice, there needs to be some story for me. This is like if I said the inverse, I need un-scheduled RP because if I wanted to plan out my RP, I might as well just write the book? Not saying scheduled RP is planned, just that sounded like lumping all 'improv' or 'random' or 'unscheduled' rp into random, and pointless social only.

See, my read on it was that it's hard to get RP with the people you want sometimes unless you schedule it. Busy lives, and all that.

We should take advantage of this opportunity to talk about how cool Aleksei is.

      Pretty cool, right?

Do we need to? He already knows everything, he doesn't need to know he's enslaved our hearts and minds as well. God.

Enslaving does seem out of character for him.

It's always the ones you least suspect.

This is late because I don't usually go see movies but I just caught a copy of the Black Panther and I have to wonder, does no one else find it hilarious that the movie is a white supremacist dream come true, but for black people?

      eyeroll

      • All Wakandans are of the same people so there is no crime or social problems.

There are actually several tribes in Wakanda, one of which lives in remove from the others and actually becomes a source of internal social conflict.

      • King is treated like a celebrity. No one is allowed to challenge.

Except, like. The ritual challenge? That is built in? Like -- that's a really important plot point? The fact that no one expects T'challa to be challenged is indication that the Panther Tribe is actively cultivating good relationships with the other tribes. (Except the Jabari, who have isolated themselves, and then return to challenge.)

      • Wakanda intervenes militarily where ever it wants in the world.

Except -- part of the major points is that it doesn't? Like. This was the core conflict of the film. They have agents all over the world, but they work quietly at most. It was Erik who wanted to start intervening militarily.

      • Leader kills his political enemies.

W -- hen? The time T'challa didn't kill M'baku? Or the time he wanted to save Erik and Erik refused?

      • Black Panther is the Randian hero personified.

You either wildly didn't understand Black Panther or you super don't understand what a Randian hero is. T'challa is the opposite of an individualist hero: his duty to protect his people and the civilization around him over his own personal desires is the core of his character.

If you changed Wakanda into Texas and reversed the race of the actors, this movie would be every white-nationalist manifesto ever written rolled into one.

There's a pretty huge difference between white nationalism, which is closely connected to colonialism, which invades other territories and then conquers, pushes out, or exterminates the natives, and a fantasy about a small piece of Africa that managed to avoid colonization and thrive.

Also, did you miss how the answer to the core conflict of the film -- "Should Wakanda be opening itself up to help other nations" -- was that, yes, they in fact should be opening up? Like. The whole conclusion was that their isolationist policy was a mistake and that they had a responsibility to use their power to help better those in need elsewhere.

I try not to get too attached to anyone as RP partners, because it never works as well as you or perhaps they are hoping. An absolute death knell is someone inviting you to play on a game they like; what they are almost never doing is inviting you to play with them.

That is so strangely opposite to my experience. Whenever someone invites me to a game, they want to play with me. And whenever I invite someone to a game, it's because I want to play with them there!

Things that make me want to RP more with a person: their RP is fun and they are nice OOC. RP being fun can be pretty subjective, but -- picking up what I'm dropping, giving stuff in return, etc. Being attentive and responsive. Having a sense of specificity to their PC, which is what makes PCs really seem alive to me instead of kind of generic. Being generally considerate and a good sport.

Things that turn me off? In actual RP terms, I really hate a sense of IC gaslighting. Even when it's totally legit IC, it just gets under my skin and I don't like playing with it, so I'm likely to avoid that character or player in the future. By this I mean that sense of, like -- PC A does something super rude or whatever, my PC reacts like it's rude, and then I get a whole bunch of "omg you're so unreasonable/I wasn't being rude" back IC. I think this is more likely just a level of OOC unawareness, but it super bugs me, so I avoid it when I encounter it.

OOC clingyness, rudeness, etc. I don't have a problem with RPing with a person a bunch if we're both really feeling it, so long as we're both also chill with the other being like "Okay gonna go RP with some other folks!" I've had RP partners like that and it's totally great.

I'll say disrespecting my time rather than wasting. If we have plans and RL happens, it happens! But please don't then leave it on me to follow up when you come back around the game. If I get suddenly held up and miss someone, I'll be paging or mailing them as soon as I'm back to the game for a quick apology. The whole "miss a planned thing and then don't even bother to say anything" drives me a bit nuts.

I tend to be on channels a lot, so just -- idk man, sometimes I find someone generally aggravating in how they talk on channel, and then I don't particularly want to RP with them. If you are OOCly rude, patronizing, etc., where I can see, I probably don't want to play with you.

Being demanding/entitled about RP or in RP. Being inconsiderate.

I WILL ADD MORE IF I THINK OF MORE.

Bringing us to skills, other things did bother me a little about this, as there is a whole swath of 'em that overlap and man do I hate me some skill overlap. I will overlook the shit out of this for good RP and intrigue though.

Some of the overlap is actually for "people from this culture take skill X, people from this other culture take skill Y." Most of those are listed on the game wiki's skills page, so make sure to double-check. Or even if you don't, it's not a big deal, they'll let you fix it after the fact if they don't catch it in approval. (This is totally what I did.)

I didn't really get the impression that 12 represented "average".

That's what their wiki says, 12 is average.

@roz That's a little better at least, as that represents that 8 is more the baseline average rather than statistical average. Which is very helpful to thinking of character in that way.

Yeah, I went through the same sort of thing where it just didn't make sense in my head at first before reading that bit and adjusting my expectations a bit (because I also felt like "if 12 is average then I have to really suck at some stuff").

@lithium I was a little confused at first too with attributes. I eventually just googled "king arthur pendragon rpg chargen" for suggestions, and got an excerpt of a PDF that helped with suggestions of how to, say, stat a decent combat character, and it kind of gave me permission to lower some stuff that I was worried about. I don't even know if 12 is meant to indicate "average." There might be a range around it that's average. Like, the book says that recommended minimums for a PC who's going to see combat are like - Size 11, Strength 10, and Constitution 8. Seeing that really adjusted my expectations in what was meant to be considered "average."

If you want to convert non-MU* players into MU* players you have to make it a gamewide priority. Like, staff overall has to decide that this is a Thing The Game Is Doing and make a particular effort at it. Write up helpfiles meant to help educate people brand new to MU*s, be conscious of common jargon and try to record translation for newcomers, set the example on channels, etc. It's far from impossible, it's just that our cultural habits are, as has been said, unwelcoming. You can absolutely change it, and there are games that are successful in being welcoming to people new to the medium. But the thing that those games have in common is that they've made a particular push to be.

I would suggest seeing if one of the Wikidot mavens might make you some nicer templates for things like logs and character pages and house pages. Nothing fancy, just cleaner layouts that are easier to read and more informative. Probably as easy as then just lifting some of their own code. Better to try doing that now before you have too many existing pages to convert. There are several game wikidots around that are clean and accessible.

The logger output format doesn't match up to their wiki log template atm.

Got tugged here by some friends and got a character through CG easily enough! Not familiar with the system, but it wasn't at all difficult to parse. Staff has been helpful and responsive, folks seem generally friendly. I've just had a few scenes with the family I came in with. There's clearly been a lot of thought and development that's gone into the setting and system stuff (as evidenced by the other VD thread about its development).

The wiki is pretty painful, alas, both stylistically and functionally. And some helpfiles are missing for commands that are part of their newer system developments. But it's mostly the wiki that makes me sad. (It's not a Mediawiki vs Wikidot thing, just for the record! I don't love Wikidot, but there are many solid game wikis utilizing it.)

It won't stop me playing, though! (It may make me more loathe to post logs, admittedly.) Still having fun for the time being.
