@krmbm Optics. And communication, clearly. Admittedly, I'm finding the mini-golf hypothetical just as distracting as TS for some reason. Maybe I need to get a game in, soon.

So let's divorce the issue from sex, so we don't have to worry about pearl-clutching.
Should staff NPCs be wandering around, roleplaying random mini-golf games that don't do anything for the story? Setting? Pretty much anything but their own desire to have a mini-golf scene?
IMO, no. If you want to RP mini-golf on a game that's not about mini-golf, do it with a PC, not a staff-run NPC. Otherwise, you're implying that mini-golf is important on some level that it's really not.
Does the mini-golf scene help set up a foundation of security and friendship for PCs where the NPC is concerned, from which to jump off of? This seems like it's just a matter of taste. Sure, NPCs can be very rewarding while still lacking in those dimensions. It depends on the story you're telling.

What drives me crazy is when a staff has an NPC but that they use to be the star of a plot. No. Stop that. That is for PCs. If you want to be the star of your show, make a PC.
lol, my D&D GM does this. The guy has a fetish for his idiot rogue he played in another campaign and now that he's running one, has turned it into some sort of celebrity hero that the NPCs bring up at every opportunity. It's kind of annoying.
Time to derail the campaign and kill that rogue.

RE: RL Anger
Last night on our way to tabletop, we had to help a woman move her puppy out of the street after it was hit by a car. The driver who did it sped off and she was totally hysterical, so my one (much more emotionally intelligent) friend took her aside to a nearby stoop to block her vision while a passing driver and I tried to move the dog to the sidewalk. The guy like, looked at me in the eyes right when we were about to and said, "I can't do this," and left - so I had to. It was so fucking awful. I didn't sleep at all last night. Every time I tried to close my eyes, I kept bringing up all the visuals and now that I'm exhausting, I am feeling so many things about it.

Sending a player something you're excited about and waiting in anticipation for them to open it and be excited about it, too.

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
First and foremost, we'd like to thank everyone for being so interested in our game! We’re excited to play with you all! Unfortunately, we are no longer accepting new applications at this time. We apologize for any disappointment. @tat and I know our limitations as GMs and in order to make this as fun an experience as possible for both players and ourselves, we set a player limit and we’re sticking to it.
Those who have already created charbits are encouraged to continue on with the chargen process, submit for approval, and enter play. All others, uh… suffer? No, I’m kidding sort of! Seriously, thank you all. It feels wonderful to have so many people interested in sharing something that we’ve talked about and poured ourselves into for over a year at this point. We’re incredibly grateful and look forward to seeing what happens!
We will address the possibility of reopening applications at a later date.

@Tat A couple of questions about theme in general if you don't mind:
- How long has magic been around for in the modern age, at least as far as is commonly known by PCs? That is, are we talking months? Years? What's our time frame to compare 'veterans' and 'newbies'?
There is no magic in the modern age. PCs have no frame of reference for it. If they do, it's the same frame of reference we have in the real world. Myths, works of fiction, etc.
Magic has slowly begun to return as of mid-December. Here is a post regarding the current state of magic: https://spiritlakemu.com/forum/5/80
- What is the non-magical public's awareness of it? Is there a 'masquerade' or do common NPCs expect to run into weird shit?
The public has no awareness of magic. It is a real-world setting. PCs will have to problem solve this themselves. There is no masquerade. We are not WoD.
I also assume there's no IC organization (as in, leadership, etc) of any kind as the game opens since nothing about it was in the game files.
There is no existing IC organization known to PCs in regards to magic.

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
@cobaltasaurus No need to apologize! Unfortunately, the magic required to sustain such a curse will have been off. Much of the story we'll be telling is taking ordinary lives and making them magical. We can start workshopping ideas tomorrow! Happy to do it.

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
@cupcake I haven't heard any murmurs of another vet concept in the works yet! Access to familiars is little ways down the line (still fully attainable! BUT~) so I wouldn't recommend setting an entire concept around that? There /are/ going to be plenty of instances of new magical creatures being introduced through portals. I'm sure that sort of expertise could come in handy then!
Things to consider: a vet would probably mean a commuter job to Granby and not Grand Lake proper. Grand Lake population is like, under 500 people.
ETA: Some smalltown job ideas. It's okay to be humble, ya'll are about to be wizards. https://spiritlakemu.com/wiki/job_ideas

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
@cobaltasaurus So - darker themes aside - when you're thinking of a concept... keep in mind that magic is just now returning. These characters are not yet familiar with actual spellcraft.
Here's a post on the current state of magic where Beta PCs would be starting: https://spiritlakemu.com/forum/5/80
As for casting through music:
"Casting magic is a very personal thing. It almost always requires the focus of physical motion, especially for novices, but that motion varies according to what speaks to the spellcaster. One may utilize movements from a favored martial art, while another's casting may carry the grace of ballet. Only very powerful casters require no movement at all. It does not require speech, though some spellcasters use sound to help focus their magic.Casting a spell is often accompanied by a visual, auditory, or even olfactory signal such as sparks, a flash of colored light, a chill in the air, or the overwhelming scent of pine. Representative of the caster's favored schools of magic, these personalized accompaniments can evolve and grow over time as the caster finds his/her niche in the magical world. There are even tales of these changing in the wake of a traumatic event." https://spiritlakemu.com/wiki/magic#casting-spells

There is no technomagic.
This makes me sad.
https://spiritlakemu.com/wiki/magic#creating-discovering-spells
This also makes me sad. Here's a firehose of construction:
This game's Wiki is all over the place. It's nice, brief, clever, legible, beautiful, but not consistent. The Character Creation page links to Schools and therefore specific spells, but not to the aforementioned Magic page.
I'm now starting to wonder why the Character Generation page doesn't link straight to this Magic System page, which has the same information and a lot more.
In fact, as magic characters are the focus of the game, I'm wondering why this page isn't more featured.
This isn't a nit-pick, this is outright confusion that can probably be fixed by dumping the 'Schools' page and linking the Magic System page in its place.
Thank you for the feedback!

@secretfire Those characters listed as NPCs hold thematic relevance which can be revealed through play. Many are former Alpha characters. The players who went through Alpha with us were able to create their Beta characters early but Beta gameplay has not begun.

It had me at twin peaks and Buffy. But I work all the time so not sure... @Tat How accessible do you see your game to casual players? (Like I work overtime a lot so scene maybe once or twice a week.)
Once or twice a week should be somewhat manageable. Supernatural occurrences are going to be cut with small-town happenings that we hope will regulate pace somewhat. The setting is a real place, it's google-able, and it's hilarious. While there are a few plans down the line that may shake things up, there's no real aim to make this the kind of place where you look away for a second and suddenly all of the things have changed.
Our Alpha was a bit rapid-fire due to time constraints so I think it's safe to say that's something we're being mindful of.
