    • RE: Character 'types'

I would say I have two types.

      1. Vain, overconfident, witty, emotionally explosive young women who tend to be full of charm and charisma, not content to remain on the sidelines, and who are more than a little reckless when they think it will get them what they want. Often exceptional fighters or at least very good at giving off that impression.

      2. Cool, confident and ruthless commanders. Often the characters from number 1 will mature into this. Tend to have a brutal and sadistic edge to them, and do not bat their eyes at making morally questionable choices for the greater good - though they will aim the consequences of those choices squarely at themselves if they can.

      I, uh.

I can't really say I'm not playing to type right now.

Uematsu and Mitsuda drew heavily from classical, romantic and baroque techniques in writing their music, and brought a minimalist feel to it. Those who liked their work - particularly on the SNES - might find themselves fans of Ludovico Einaudi's piano work. There is something about intentional musical minimalism that is stirring, and when they moved on to CD formats and more complicated music, some of that charm faded quite quickly (though Mitsuda's work in Xenosaga is still gorgeous - the Gnosis theme was one I played on repeat a lot in my teen years).

Those were also the days when OCRemix and VGTunes (I think that was the name, but it has been so long) were a force in fandom. Things like Terra in Black were what actually got me into metal, and you can hear the minimalism and romantic influences clearly in this cover. It's very simplistic - but it's very good.

Other honorable mentions are the main and battle themes from FFIV, Cyan's theme... I think I'm going on a nostalgia run tonight.

      1. Dany has ruled with fear and violence ever since the dragons hatched. The mother of dragons was a dragon; a Targaryen. She has rarely been merciful and the center of her own world. Did she really become a villain, or was she always a villain that the viewer simply had sympathy for?

Oh yeah, like, I don't think they're really doing a GOOD JOB of this final season in general, but the upswell of sentiment that this came totally out of left field for Daenerys is...not correct. You're absolutely right that she's been a conquerer ruling with fear and violence for seasons now. Generally it's just that it's been a bit more contained and directed at people we want to die. But she's been a "I will end all tyranny!" tyrant for a while now.

It goes even beyond this, and it was a callback from Tyrion that I think really set in Dany what she needed to do in order to win. Fire and blood are the words of her House, and tonight we saw plenty of both - but the reminder about Meereen set her on this course. Yes, Meereen opened its gates to her and surrendered, and King's Landing did too. But think about how many problems she had actually ruling over and controlling the city after that point, thanks to the wealth, thanks to her mercy being seen as weakness.

She wasn't about to make that mistake again.

Watching players make terrible, terrible choices that are going to send everything into a complete tailspin, even though they should rationally know better (and in many cases do).

If everyone is perfect all the time, the story is far less interesting, but hey - we live in interesting times.

Chrono Trigger is the good one, Chrono Cross is the one that thinks that applying an accent filter counts as unique character development.

Lucifer's been renewed for a fifth (and final) season. So, they'll have a chance to end the story the way they want, rather than leaving it on a cliffhanger when it doesn't get renewed at some point.

It's smart. They already had to save it once.

Lucifer was always slated to be a 5 year run, so they are just getting to finish it up like they always had intended to do.

I have a single word to say to that:

      Supernatural.

I firmly believe Supernatural is a five season show with some really terrible fanfiction spinoff that came immediately after. Reality may say otherwise, but my version is better.

Somewhere around here I have a copy of Intergalactic Cooking Challenge, but it will be pretty hard for me to find. There was also the Mister Lincoln Experiment. I had the fortune of living with someone who designed a few silly games in college.

@Ganymede I have claimed multiple times it's some of the smartest writing on television - despite how dumb a lot actually is. It's a strange contradiction and it absolutely does feel like small-town Ontario.

@Ganymede To be clear, the ingredients used in homeopathy are so diluted that they are functionally not present. I have yet to see anything showing that it is in any way more effective than a placebo, and it is part of a whole set of quackery that really bilks people out of their money.

What homeopathy (and to a lesser extent, naturopathy) are good at is not rushing a patient through, making them feel like a real person, and not demeaning them.

Of course, most con artists are good at that.

@lotherio which had never been listed as a bannable offense before, ever. The first few bans were even before time was asked for.

Again, you can spin this in your head however you want, but that's what happened. Administration that was widely seen as unjust led to protest, which led to bans, and the combination of the two led to people walking.

I, too, have been lost to Hades. Really glad I only found out about it after the full release, this game is slick as hell and every single character is fantastically written.

      And my god, the feels.

      Such a good job.

@reimesu Let's just say I also don't have the greatest opinion of you as a person based on the tone you choose to use and the level of empathy you generally show.

It was a political event, and it was a post in the politics thread. I actually don't think most people would have been happy about a political debate starting up in RL sads, and would be complaining about that instead.

So Final Fantasy XIV is pretty good. I know, no one has heard this yet.

But being ahead of everyone else in my FC has meant I can watch their impending heartbreaks with glee.

      It's a good feeling.

    • The Esports thread

I know I can't be the only one who follows the Esports scene at all. My focus is admittedly League of Legends, and, as it's growing, I'm starting to follow Teamfight Tactics as well. I suspect that once it's out of beta, it's going to become a really interesting strategy game, and it's already pulled a lot of the biggest names from Hearthstone over.

So we have the last week of LCS regular season coming up this weekend, as well as EVO starting in two days, and we're only weeks away from the Dota 2 International. Where are people looking, what's interesting to you, and what's happening out in other games that those of us who tend to be focused in one or two might be missing?

Personally, I'm watching to see if TSM is going to fail to make it into playoffs in League this summer. That would be such a drastic dropoff for the org, and the implications for Worlds are huge. I'm a perpetual CLG fan, and I'm loving how the org has come up strong lately, and am hoping they manage to squeak into worlds yet again despite their disastrous spring performance.
