@roz You might be surprised, really. (I mean in a good way.)

I mean, all my old files have the 'don't be a dick' stuff in them that is everywhere, and the category of 'dickery'.

Yes, there's a power discrepancy difference between male and female terms, and that's relevant, but I think gendered derogatory language is just better avoided regardless on the whole if we're going there at all, even if it's not necessarily equivalent due to said power discrepancy.

After that verbal fist fight discussion, I decided that whenever I rework those files, that language is going to change to gender neutral terminology, full stop. (I'm thinkin' "asshole", 'cause everybody's got one, and "don't be an asshole" is plenty clear. <shrugs>)

That may sound like a small thing, but it isn't.

...nobody show that image to any civil engineers from New Jersey, or we're really in for some shit.

ETA: For those unfamiliar, it is the land of traffic circles, jughandles, and cloverleafs. 'Traffic circle' is the mid-atlantic US way of saying 'roundabout'.

ETA2: Put it this way, they would rather send you in a half mile loop over state lines and back again than let you just make a left turn.

@saosmash FWIW, I seem to be the word-magnet on the forum now. I don't especially care, though, so it sorta just bounces off.

People screaming it in my face RL? Less bouncy. But that's more 'wtf, there is a total stranger screaming hostilities in my face, what the hell is happening here' than the language they're using.

...I did kinda have to chuckle a little at this tiny frail wee little old lady who hurled it and a shedload of other nastiness at me for sitting on the smoking bench in my mother-in-law's condo complex for having green hair, though. She went off. Baffling as hell and just... so much... whut? Like, it's the smoking bench, but I still expect people to snark or side-eye me for smoking regardless because that's how people do, but it being about the hair just blew my dang mind, for real. She was carrying little sunshine yellow crochet baby shoes she was working on while she yelled, y'all, it was trippy. 😕

The Mandalorian grabbed all the classic Old West/Samurai Film plots and did them quite well. It's a hell of a space opera love letter to them all.

The Witcher was great fun to watch (as someone who never played the game or read the books) as a fantasy saga.

They're too different to readily compare re: quality for a variety of reasons, I feel, as they're different animals from very different kinds of sources. Even beyond that, the similarity is more or less 'eh?' outside of 'will appeal to geeks'. Different slices of geekdom in a lot of ways, really.

@packrat FWIW, I'm a US registered Independent, socially liberal, fiscally leaning conservative. Which essentially means: 'filthy heathen hippie who thinks we should pay our bills and not blow endless tax dollars on absurd and needless shit'.

To understand politics in the US, you essentially have to understand that at this point, 'absurd shit' can be defined as 'health care for children of low income families' or 'tactical underpants', depending on who you're talking to.

...it doesn't make any more sense if you live here, soaking in it, either. It really doesn't.

I think it's fair to say it's very much a bone thrown to fandom in one big way: A New Hope was a space western, and going so strongly back to those roots is doubtless gonna tug hard on some of the old fart fans that have been around and watching since those days. (It is a fairly different vibe from the second trilogy, to be certain.)

@friendlybee I'm going to be really blunt: the dogpiling that goes on here rarely has anything to do with someone being liberal or conservative in the US political sense.

If you think everyone who complains about being dogpiled here in these terms, you are never going to see the problem for what it actually is: the same cliquish high school bullshit everyone is very familiar with.

      'Coding' my sweet ass.

I looked up our recent local travesty and got derailed by giggling at 'Husbands' Run' which was also on the map. I think it's a creek, but I can't be certain. It is not far from The Blue Ball Barn (also on the map) and again, I am not making this shit up. I couldn't if I tried.

@auspice We're going to have to agree to disagree, then. If someone turns my description of myself into something disgusting, that's not an idea they're attacking. I'm using 'cheered it on' in the sense that last I checked, it had upvotes on it; that's encouragement and support of the statement.

I'm not talking about that and haven't been for several hours; it got one laugh and one bitchy response, unless joking around with Tinuviel and then moving on to a completely different discussion in the thread hours later counts as 'ranting and beating a dead horse'.

What is even going on here? I'm also not on anything, or drinking anything, etc. Entirely lucid and sober. Jesus, are you? What in the actual fuck?

@bored It didn't help that the post served no other purpose. It's not like it was one comment among many being singled out in a lengthy post. Other than the insult, it was completely content-free.

@JinShei I am ashamed to admit I like like... 3/4 of that. Not to live in, but to like... host cheesy feasts in or hold D&D weekends at. The pond is nice! I have always wanted koi!

It's the bar with 'Graceland' in bad cursive over it that just destroys my brain and soul all at once, like being whomped with a 50lb sledge straight to the back of the noggin.

Less disgruntlement, more... 'well that's a year off my life' disquietment.

      IMPORTANT NOTE TO SELF:

When you have spent the past 18 hours watching ghost story horror movies and paranormal shows in the background while getting stuff together for a project and sorting supply foo, do not forget the roofers were coming today when you hear a sudden, loud banging and eerie shuffling from RIGHT over your head that rattles the entire house.

@bored I think it may be in the difference between 'attack' and 'constructively criticize', in the end. 'Criticism' is more or less where it is now, and that can be interpreted as either of the previous things, even when the previous things are very different in practice. It sounds trivial, but isn't.

'Your idea is the dumbest piece of shit I have ever had the misfortune to witness' is criticism... but it's an attack without any constructive value whatsoever.

@PuppyBreath The reason you're glad you don't have a gun in the house is the same as mine, and I feel you on that one.

My folks do the same thing. They are similarly head-fucked into thinking they have a corner on discernment re: who is and isn't 'deserving', and their take on health care is 'why the fuck should we care about health care being accessible to anybody else, fuck this socialist bullshit, we have medicare now and don't have to care'.

There really are days I wish the irony fairy was an actual thing that'd show up and sparkle the shit out of somebody's face for a few seconds when something like that escapes their mouths. 😕

    • RE: MSB, SJW, and other acronyms

Question: does nodeBB allow 'forum-section'-based bans? As in, if someone consistently demonstrates they can't abide by the rules of the constructive areas of the forum, they can be removed from that area of the forum? Confined to the pit, if they're treating the whole forum like the pit?

Otherwise, is there a means of making a default opt-in to the constructive groups that can be forcibly revoked if someone can't behave like something other than a shrieking gibbon in those spaces?

I mean, I wouldn't ever want people to not be able to casually guest-browse the constructive threads, but if the only way we can have constructive threads is an approach of this kind, well.

@PuppyBreath Was going to offer just the same, actually. We may not know each other well, but frankly, there are those weird hours sometimes in the middle of the night when shit gets dark in a totally different sort of way than the sun going down. (In all seriousness... if anybody sees me around and posting and whatnot and is in that position, please don't hesitate to PM, poke me on skype, whatever works.)

My folks were the same on the ACA stuff, and were former military, too. I ended up almost dying a handful of days after finally getting insurance (through husband's work) for the first time in over a decade, and... welp. That hospital bill, had we not been able to get it, was more than my folks' house is worth. What we still owe is non-fun, but $6k-ish vs. a quarter-frickin'-million? Yeah, you'd think they'd be happier about this than they are. 😐 Nope, they just bitch about how we must feel so slighted by the gov't that we owe $6k. Uhm... (All the sigh. All the sigh in the world.)
