There's not really a question about how emboldened white nationalist, anti-semitic, racist, and 'men's rights activist' groups are by the current state of affairs, no matter how horrible people may or may not have been historically. For many posting around here, at least, this is the most extreme president and circumstance in this regard in their adult lifetimes.

That it's a wakeup call to a bunch of people who maybe weren't paying attention to the existing ugly realities before isn't something I'm about to complain about or disparage. People becoming more aware of what the hell is going on is a good thing, especially if the result is that they actually give a fuck about what's going on and try to do something about it.

There's a difference, I think, between passive and interactive characters on this one. As in, I don't typically feel bad seeing a villain die in a movie or comic or book, but player characters (or well-developed NPCs run by people over time) are more interactive in real time, and there's a definite difference there.

There are some things that the schadenfreude fairy visits about, but health/family losses/death/major trauma/assault... just not on that list for me. I just quietly hope instant karma lets me know when it eventually catches up with them, because it generally will, in some poetic justice sort of fashion.

I think the 'meanest' one I can think of involves a woman I knew online who would send 'oops my top slipped hello nipples' or 'omg I didn't realize you could see I wasn't wearing panties in that pic! tee hee I guess you can tell I just got my waxing done though!' selfies to guys she knew were involved with someone online to try to 'steal' them, despite being married RL. Friend of mine was talking to her once on skype, and heard her lose her shit screaming jealous-rage bloody fucking murder at her husband for looking at a picture of a half-naked woman online for several minutes until he could get a word in edgewise, at which point he just whimpered, "...but honey, look, it's you! This is the pic you sent me the other day!"

      I laughed.

I laughed really fucking hard and I feel precisely zero remorse for it.

That shit's still funny as hell to me.

@Pandora I'd rather someone not fauxpologize, so... yeah, that. If somebody doesn't mean it, I'd rather they not.

There's a few people I've been intentionally snarky as fuckall at. Some, I feel a little bad about. Others, not at all.

      @Admiral said in RL Anger:

Not like those people who -like- cancer.

Hell, back on WORA people were wishing someone had another heart attack and 'that this one will be fatal'. Wishing cancer on someone is not something I'd put past more than a few folks lurking around the fringes of the board for a hot second, as we've already seen wishing death and rape on people here.

It's not much of a stretch to think that some people like cancer well enough, provided 'the right person' gets it. Which is more than a little sad, when you think about it.

@Arkandel In some ways we're saying the same thing -- my theoretical Lance is an unwanted antagonist for you, so she's removed because you don't want to tell that story and have no interest in it, and you in this instance would give none fucks about anything but telling your story without me interfering in it.

In others, I dunno. I haven't seen a lot of instances of 'how dare that character exist on the same grid I'm on!' outside of Shang, where people would just... well, huff and leave the square or write snarky metaposes about it.

(Back to TV though! 😄 )

@Arkandel Dunno if I agree with that. The typical argument I hear for it has nothing to do with OOC grudges, and is essentially the "drop back, nuke the site from orbit, only way to be sure," approach. This is typically because the PKer in question isn't especially interested in that avenue of character growth and considers the other character to be an interference with the story they want to be telling instead.

Not everyone considers conflict an interesting storyline, a fun challenge, a compelling obstacle to overcome, or a an opportunity for interesting character growth. (Being fair, not every conflict is any of that, though this is quite rare.)

I think that's dumb, and you think it's dumb, and probably a majority of posters here think it's dumb, but I think it's a mistake to expect that this is a universal perspective on games. On the more generous end of the spectrum, there are far too many folks with tunnel vision re: the story they want to be telling for this to be immediately evident to them; on the less generous one, you have folks who do not care about what experience anyone else is having or wants because they are so focused on their story being told entirely their way.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the various installments of 'The Arya and The Hound Show'. It is one of my favorite examples of the 'best of enemies' dynamic in recent memory, and the show doesn't exactly lack for examples of that one.

And seriously, anybody who thinks PK is the only answer or best option at all times to resolve a thing should probably watch those scenes, possibly on repeat loop, maybe for a few weeks.

@Coin Kinda just more proof that 'perfect' is not a thing that's going to happen, but 'is not an asshat substantially less often than one is an asshat' is the best we really have any business expecting of anyone.

      @Thenomain said in RL Anger:

Sometimes an apology isn't enough. Sometimes an apology is the wrong thing to do, because too many people stop there when they need to fix the damn problem.

^ This. Not in regard to you in any way, but in regard to that being a very broad, if not universal, truism.

Too many people have a habit of treating an apology like a 'get out of jail (almost) free' card, and there are absolutely certain circumstances in which actions have to back up the words for the words to have any meaning at all.

@Bobotron The animation quality was pretty damn good, so I can see them wanting to give it a trial run of sorts before pouring in the cash for a longer season. Animation isn't cheap. Nothing is, ultimately, but animation of any quality is on the expensive side by default.

@Thenomain I think it's only 4 half hour episodes for this first season if I'm remembering correctly, so the jury's still out on that.

And might be for a couple of years.

The main reason I prefer self-aware assholery is that there's less drama involved, generally.

      A: "You're being a total asshole!"
      B: "Yep, I know."
      A: "Knock that shit off!"
B: "OK."/"No." <action can be taken if necessary by staff or who/whatever>

      A: "You're being a total asshole!"
B: "OMG NO I AM NOT! HOW DARE YOU!"
B to 😄 "OMG A JUST CALLED ME AN ASSHOLE!"
😄 "OMG A is such an asshole!"
C to A: "You need to stop abusing B!"
      A to B: "What the fuck, B?"
B: "I am not talking to you, you monster!"
B to 😄 "A is harassing me now!"
      C to A: "Stop harassing B!"
      ...and so on.

@Ganymede I will admit, there's this spinach and quinoa thing my mother makes once in a while for 'classic family Sunday dinner' that's pretty epic. I have no idea what else is in it, but if she tells me, I'll pass it along. (Not sure if it has anything else in it that's verboten; it sometimes ends up with romano cheese on top but it doesn't require that.)

This whole thing is so dazzlingly vaguebook-y it's starting to make my eyes cross.

Also, fuck these painkillers, that instantly made my brain mock up a 'vogue' cover with 'vague' in its place and a pixelated censor hazed face with backlighting ('we have protected the identity of this witness... ' ) as the cover photo, complete with slogans like, 'how to get away with snarking the shit out of someone while playing innocent' and '10 completely bullshit rules you can make up on the fly to apply to participants in an argument to try to gain the upper hand' and 'how to instill paranoia and alienate people (part 4 of 7)'.

@Coin That was my take on Castlevania, too. The 'first season' is anything but long. It seems like the rough equivalent of, say, the first film in a trilogy. I'm not familiar with the source material, so I can't say if anybody who is should be pleased or not with it, but I liked it. There was only one line that made me wince for its awkwardness, and that only one stood out is somewhat impressive.

Am going back through all of GoT this week, 'cause why not.

@Ganymede There's some stuff with quinoa that has me eating less of it than I might otherwise. There's a lot produced, but it's produced for export in such volumes that the local populations for whom it was long a staple, and still produce it today, have apparently had some issues because of it, having somewhat limited options regionally and economically. I am enough of a bleeding heart to have cut back a bit on it for that reason, anyway.

@Paris I do ridiculously well on Atkins or similar diets. Which is like... all the meat meat meat meat. I drop weight like mad and all the numbers improve from where they are, when they're already dang good. I am apparently hardwired for tasty, tasty murder.
