    • RE: Good TV

It's worth watching the original movie if you get the chance, if you like the series.

I wouldn't say the series is at all dependent on having seen it, as a prequel. There are some things from the film you can look at and say, 'oh, so that's why that was how it was!' but that's fairly standard for any prequel.

There is a reason my husband has reservations about watching the series based on having seen the movie, but it's pretty spoilery for anyone who hasn't seen the film when considered with a prequel like this one.

***=Major movie/series spoiler for those who haven't seen the film, and may not realize this going in.***

He wasn't sure he wanted to watch something with a bunch of well-done characters and in-depth story, knowing that all of their heroic efforts... pretty much fail and all of those characters are not going to make it, even if we don't see it happen on screen. Can't say I entirely blame him. He's still waffling, but we'll probably watch it over vacation if he doesn't before then.

      @Roz It's a prequel, so I would imagine so.

It's been a fantastic weekend for fantasy series between Carnival Row and Dark Crystal.

We're usually lucky to get one thing like this in a year, let alone two in a weekend. Spoiled as hell now.

ln all seriousness, y'all, the Monin cane sugar cola syrup. It's very different and worth a try.

First sip was 'what is this about?!' and it was because it had flavors beyond 'is mouth-puckeringly sweet'.

If you're one of those 'don't drink soda often, but when you do, you want it to be really tasty' people, it's a good call 'cause it keeps a long time and will last well. It is not a super-concentrate like the soda stream syrups and similar, so you have much more control over 'how sweet do I want this to be?'

@Goldfish If it makes you feel any better, the only soda we currently have in the house is 2 small bottles of Pepsi, something ridiculous like 5 12-packs of seltzer, a bizarre assortment of flavored ginger ales (blackberry, cranberry, green tea) and that one can of Squirt I'm saving like a bottle of champagne for a special occasion.

Because regions suck and you can't get Squirt here normally. 😐

(Go ahead and make fun of that name, lord knows we do. But that stuff spoiled us horribly and we don't do citrus soda otherwise now in this house.)

I know the history stuff is all there, and the museum/etc.

Local brand loyalty always amuses me a little. We have something somewhat similar here, in that most folks in the area don't go 'to the convenience store', they 'go to Wawa'. This is partly because almost every convenience store is a Wawa, but the lingering 7-11s and similar get referred to the same way bafflingly often.

Until very recently, 7-11 sold lottery tickets, but Wawas did not.

Watching people argue about this for decades at the front of Wawas was more entertaining than I should admit, because you just knew they said 'go to Wawa and get...', and actually meant 7-11.

@Auspice The folks I know who go for the diet stuff swear by Coke almost universally. I can't go near the sugar replacements, so I have no idea.

I drink soda so rarely it's 'whatever's on sale'. We do try to get the cane sugar Pepsi if it's around to avoid the corn syrup (if we're going for sugary crap, better it be actual sugary crap), but it's never around.

When I am less lazy/the soda stream is charged up I just mix my own with the Monin sugar cane cola syrup. (It makes both taste like asphalt by comparison, but nnngh $$$$.)

@Auspice I live in a Pepsi bottling town, but weirdly it's not like that here. It's just way more common to find it locally since the local restaurants get a better deal from the distributor that's literally just down the road.

I'm just like 'coffee, seltzer... whatever's on sale this week.'

@Doozer Oh, lord, it so was. "Honey, you're gonna be staying with us for almost a month, and there's two things you should know. First, if you stay longer and it goes over a month, you need to throw in on dishes and laundry. Second, <Coke lecture>."

      It that important in Atlanta.

@Doozer ...Atlanta? Because I remember getting the 'it's all Coke and don't you dare use that fuckin' P-word in this town' lecture from my Atlanta friends. 😄

Double for pure 'what in the actual fuck'.

I live in a development with two exits: one at each end of the main street.

They've been working on the bottom of the hill exit for months, so it's been blocked off.

...today, they began work at the top of the hill exit, blocking it off.

People are drifting home from rush hour to find that they have been effectively barred from their homes by road crews.

The remainder of us are trapped here until they finish one end or the other.

Laugh, cry, scratch my head... I am simply at a loss, so all of these things at once.

The realization that no matter what comes out of their mouth, some people are gonna lie over and over and over again and let you down.

      Bleargh.

My annoyance here is with myself in the end, that there are some people I can't stop giving a damn about despite the reality that they did this shit, are doing this shit, and no matter how many times they say it's going to be different, they're going to continue to do this shit, and I am all too aware of this.

@Thenomain Here's hoping the distancing is more than lip service. Too often, it isn't.

It wouldn't be so worthy of slamming my head into a wall if people went with an initial gut reaction, then considered whatever it is. Instead, the hot take is all there is, and people marry that shit.

      @PuppyBreath This isn't just you. 😕

There is a group that's 'no one gives a fuck' and another of 'no one is going to actually read this, they'll read something else completely into it instead because apparently we're the hot take nation these days'.

    • RE: What MU/RPG opinions have you changed or maintained?

@Thenomain Amusingly enough, only when I read that did I realize one of the things I can safely say I've evolved a different response to.

Namely, I have less patience for people who will throw 'it's just a game, get over it!' at anyone who has an issue with their behavior, but will pitch an unholy fit any time something even seems to be going other than their preferred way. (Or explode when someone says this to them.)

Basically, my patience for 'But that's different!!!' when the only functional difference is that it's them rather than anyone else has an expiration date. (This is fairly broad-ranging, but this situational example works well.) I'll only engage with these people with full empathy for so long before I begin to distance myself from them unless they seem to be cluing in.
